Title: Any computer techie people here ?:help:
Post by: accumulator on September 22, 2012, 10:09:04 AM
:help:I have a problem with javascript turning off all the time,eg ; when i go into a site the computer freezes so i have to go to tools & click on javascript, then the computer works properly.
I've had issues with norton  & 1 of their technicians removed files willy nilly & the freezing problem has started after that, norton have been trying ever since to sort it with no success.

Any ideas anyone ??

I assume that you have de-installed and re-installed Norton and that didn't help?

Are you using Internet Explorer or another browser?

If you are using IE does using Safari or Firefox have the same "freeze" affect?

I have IE,Firefox & chrome.
Chrome is the most user friendly one for me so it is my default browser,IE was my default browser until these problems started.
It completely freezes on FF & you can't do anything & pretty much the same with IE so i don't bother with them anymore.
It really is very frustrating to try to do anything really but i have worked out enough as long as i keep clicking on java with Chrome i can do stuff.
Actually i've noticed it does'nt freeze as much on this site but every other site is a pain.

Have you tried alternative security software eg Microsoft Forefront?

Doesn't help you now, but next time you upgrade, get a Mac.

Get rid of Norton.  it's just a lot of useless nuts and bolts.

get AVG free, or pay for it.  It's heaps better than Nortons.

I have never read anything good about Nortons.

Not the trial ones.  they run out.

I will have a go at helping you with this.
I am setting up a remote support application that will allow me to remotely use PCs of my customers to resolve issues like this.
I am busy tonight, but could have a look tomorrow night if you like.

I appreciate the offer Ozcoins but as it stands i believe Norton is liable & if i were to let anyone else do work on my computer that would give Norton an out , sorry but at this time i want Norton to fix what they have done or replace the computer.

Lacey, In 6 years of Norton security this is first problem i've had,it's a pretty big problem but as i said above i want/need them to sort my computer out so it works how it used to,before i give them the boot.

How did you go with this?
When you removed Norton, did you use "add-remove programs" or try "norton removal tool" which can be downloaded from symantec website.
The removal tool should make sure everything is removed.
Does the issue still occur once norton is removed?
Does the issue come back once norton is reinstalled?
I dont like norton antivirus.
I used to be a big fan of AVG, but I am starting to lean towards Microsoft Security Essentials (which is also free, and tends not to have much impact on performance of your computer).
If you are not sure about giving a stranger access to your computer (and you should not give anyone you dont trust access to your computer), I could also talk to you over the phone and see if I can point you in the right direction.
P.S.
The offer of computer help (in whatever form you would like - eg. typed answers to questions, phone or connecting to your PC to look at it) is also open to all the regulars on here, although with name changes it might be hard for me to recognise peoples new names.

Hooray, Norton finally work out what was wrong,a plug - in was causing the issues,so it was a process of going through the plug-ins turning them on & off to identify which one & then disabling that plug - in,i'm very glad to say after a month of stress my computer is back to normal.

Good to hear - all you had to do was put a little pressure on the Norton's guy  :winkextra:

Latest version of Firefox (Firefox Quantum 58.0) has an option for tracking protection built in. Works as a very effective ad blocker -just about every unwanted ad (aren't they all?) seems to want to track you.
Not an add on but integral to the browser. It's in the "Privacy and Security" menu.

Thanks for the information.
I just switched the blocking to ''always.'' Let's see how that works.
I think the default setting is ''only in private mode.''

I switched all my sessions to "always" earlier today and so far have not required an exception to be added for any site I have visited.

Advertisements have completely disappeared from most sites -just a blank space instead.
