I concur with Mr ford perfect on fakeos, nice pickup rob on the 1961 half very nice
i like a good fake
great to see the big '46' stamped on that coin
many don't have anything that tells the buyer it's a copy
still after my ever elusive perfect 1964 penny
a recent find on our week-end away
it is very 'light' in the colour in the hand - more like the 1963 pennies that show up in the very salmon type of colour
i am wondering if it would classify as a 'red'?

Re: the 64 penny getting a RED designation. I sent a 53 halfpenny to PCGS recently that was exactly the same to see if it would get RED. Have to wait and see now. I would say yes but getting RED on Perth copper is very difficult at PCGS.
thanks echidna
i will be interested in what you get
yes, same here - I am in search of the elusive 'red' as well!!
we joined pcgs and still haven't sent a consignment over
we packed up a little group
added the $$$
and they remain here in a little lunch box!! waiting for us to take the plunge
nice set there Trout
Nice penny Rob, it might get a red. I've had mixed luck with Perth mint copper, they just don't seem to like giving it a red. Melbourne coins are no problem. I wonder if it's because red Melbourne copper tends to have the lustre you'd expect while Perth copper is generally flat and lifeless when it's red.
This is a repatriation from the US,a nice golden streaky 58 Y. penny.

Very nice 1958 penny, good job bringing that one back home
Very well struck

the Perth ones never show up as nicely struck
Yes it it very well struck up.

has that flattening that you see with it
Robbie, That 27 florin has an exceptionally good die crack all the way around the Obverse legends, shame it got broached LOL
& yes i agree that Kel's coin is definitely die fill.
yeah i thought that too - great die crack there!
still haven't found the die cracks near the mace/s on any of mine
kel's coin looks genuine to me
Got this one today in a bulk lot.
Probably one of the nicest 51Y halves I've seen in the flesh. Too bad there is a bit of rub through the hair.

Robbie picked up some lovely coins.
I've spent most of the time from 3PM today (until now, 8.30pm) cataloguing the mess that was on my desk. I don't like to think how long some of it's been sitting around. A while considering I've hardly bought anything for the last 3 months. Here's some of the stuff I found and imaged and typed into my catalogue spreadsheet.

SHOW AND TELL, well I have something to show and tell about aus bloody post..have a go at this, lucky it wasn't going overseas if this is what happens from sydney to grafton :dash1: and the turds have the hide to put their prices up..how about some bloody decent service back in this country.

Now that's worth complaining about, it gives me the s*&ts when this happens. Now that the prices have gone up I'd make a complaint mate, I would either way because you are spending money for the item to arrive safely undamaged.
Matt
The tape is wrongly labelled. Says" repaired by Australia Post" instead of "ruined by Australia Post".
Make sure if you get something trashed that you don't accept it if you think there is damage. Then you have PO employees that can confirm it was like that when it arrived. Open it in front of them and check.
I once had a package sent back from the receiver because it was a red soggy mess. Smelled like a bottle of red wine had smashed up in transit. Lucky I package things really well and nothing inside all the layers was damaged, but the outside of what was once a box was not a box anymore.
My PO let me go home, repackage and repost for free without going through the claim process.
Excellent, that's really good advice, thanks heaps PP I must remember that..and yes I like the way you pack goods :good:
Good advice to open, if you have suspicion of damage, in front of APO staff.
And, if at home, open carefully and take photos of unpacking. Try to disturb as little as possible from as delivered state. Then put it all back take it to PO to show staff and grab a claim form. Photos will help with claim and staff eyewitness report can be very handy.
Even if not insured, make a claim anyway. APO rules allow discretion to pay up to $100 damages for any item if claim is accepted. But, prepare to be persistent. We have had a couple of $100 "ex gratia" payments made for badly damaged deliveries.
Jeff
Touch wood I never have to use it but thanks for the heads up :good:

I've never ever ever ever seen that before lol, I've already checked my 55. Have you seen it before Robster?
Matt
Robster's total - with die crack 8, with die crack and figure 2- zero. (sad face now):cray:
I'm really curious to know how the backwards 2 got there? Guess I will wait until a few others have taken a look
I can't see anything unusual on the coin itself.
It's probably just a small bag mark.
Maybe point out where and i'll check it again ?

I have 6 in various grades and checked them all
so figure 2 backwards, or what looks to me more like an S
if it's raised sweet but it looks like someone has used one of these http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/15905118 don't happen to have a set do ya Matt :winkextra:
my hubby bought a 1938 crown at an auction years ago - nice unc
when we showed it to our coin dealer - after having a look over with the magnifier - he promptly showed us the tiny tiny engraved initials near the IND on the obverse
he said it was fairly common on the old coins for the owners to ''mark'' them with initials and he knows to have a look for that esp on scarcer coins

Say everyone, check out this ebay listing for a 1955 halfpenny with die crack through Y and a backwards 2 for $1000 :mafia:
just kidding,
to me it looks like a bag mark, least possible scenario, possibly a strike through.

One of my latest purchases.

very nice
my guess
ms64 rb or did they slug it with brown??
could almost be a tad better than 64 (me thinks)
Thanks Robbie.
MS64RB on this one.
I would have split it between a high 63 - low 64, it probably made 64 because of the great lustre and clean fields.
Has rainbow toning as well, hard to capture in the image, but the reverse is really attractive in the hand.
well it is a lovely coin and yes, the lustre is very evident
the aussie halfp is a buggar of a coin to get in great condition, so well done!! and it's a bonus being an obv 5
Why rate the coin so high. Brown spots all over it and the Obverse with what appears to be scuff marks. (Tears from the eyes and around the ears).
Could someone please explain.
Although I am a "coin collector", I am not a professional. Just an everyday bloke with a passion. Grading I failed at school. Hoarding I passed with flying colours.
Brown spots? Aka, carbon spots?

Hi Goldseeker,
Many years of the KGVI half pennies, especially the Perth minted coins have a poor strike on the obverse which can look like wear / scuffing. The tears and around the ears is just the way the metal flowed when the coin was struck. The lustre goes over these points when you rotate the coin, but it can be tough with the KGVI obverse.
The spots on 1951Y half pennies are not uncommon. Spots and streaks normally, but the streaks can look quite striking.

The 20 pound may be smaller.
Sovs are 22mm, Crowns 38mm, IIRC?
Its a lot closer to our dollar then.

That's the one I was thinking of and I am pretty sure that it was made of Stirling Silver to be accurate as far as all the other crowns were made (Except for that awful art deco 50% 1937 pommy one)

Easier with Copper than Silver. With silver you got 4 choices for denomination :)
Cheers on the feedback as well guys.
I had the same experience, the 1943, 45, 51PL and 52 halfpennies are pretty easy to spot just by looking at the obverse for whatever reason.

2 coin set from 2011
hi all , can anybody shed any light on this question from my brother please ? ,, kel ,,
afternoon and I hope your wound is healing up and that you get a good report from the doctor tomorrow, today we have been cleaning up and I found an Australian 2011 un circulated two coin set from the Royal Australian Mint of a dollar and a 20 cent coin. There is no hurry but when you get the chance, will you please let me know at what price such sets are selling or what they are worth. I hope you are both well and will talk to you later in the week. Thanks, Allan.
Stash them away as they might become "valuable" in around 50 years time. They are not making any more two coin sets anymore.
thanks bruce , I sent him an email asking what design is on the coins , the ones I think he is talking about must be the sheep ones where the guy is bending over the sheep and the .20 c has the 6 different pictures on it .. and worth about $ 40.00 ,, kel,,,
Picked this one up from eBay. I thought it was a die crack through Y, but I think it's a tilted 5, and there appears to be a dot between HALF and PENNY.

It's an official copy of correspondence between a chemist, Charles Watt and the NSW Colonial Treasurer regarding the extraction of silver from Sydney mint sovereigns (before 1868 they had a gold silver alloy instead of a gold copper alloy).
Yes very interesting thanks Walter, ya learn something new every day.
Quote from: 'wwwww' pid='43458' dateline='1394347299'regarding the extraction of silver from Sydney mint sovereigns
Basically, his assertion was that a Sydney sovereign had a value of a sovereign plus a penny, unlike the english sovs. This would be a problem if they were exported, as they would be melted down. The answer of course was to change the alloy, which they eventually did.

I would have thought that to separate the silver from the gold would have cost more than a penny.
You can't simply apply heat to separate silver from gold, it is a far more technical process than that
Quote from: 'trout' pid='43486' dateline='1394401542'I would have thought that to separate the silver from the gold would have cost more than a penny.
I have shown this statement of Captain Ward's to
commercial gentlemen in Sydney, who, like myself,
were quite unable to understand it. I contend that a
colonial sovereign gives the value of a sovereign and
a penny to those who extract the silver.I read that as meaning the
NETT return is a penny profit, after paying for the extraction.
I'd be interested to know how many Sydney sovs were actually melted down. Does this information exist anywhere?

I have shown this statement of Captain Ward's to
commercial gentlemen in Sydney, who, like myself,
were quite unable to understand it. I contend that a
colonial sovereign gives the value of a sovereign and
a penny to those who extract the silver.
I read that as meaning the NETT return is a penny profit, after paying for the extraction.
I'd be interested to know how many Sydney sovs were actually melted down. Does this information exist anywhere?
They contain 0.67 grams of silver, equal to 1.53 pence but Watt notes the silver in the sovereign it to be worth approximately 1 pence more than an English sovereign before extraction costs.
According to Watt, almost all the coin made in the colony was re-melted in England, the silver extracted in little more than 3 months of issue. E.W. Ward (Deputy Master of the Sydney Mint) argued this was a decided advantage to the colony as it created a demand for its coins.
In addition Ward stated it would cost about 10,000 pounds to build a plant to extract the silver and cost 7,000 pounds in labour per year. If two million sovereigns were melted a year they would only yield 500 pounds of profit per annum, Watt says it could be done for a quarter of this cost.

I like the term "Official Copy".....somewhat like "Genuine Reproduction" or " Unique Artificial Gem".
Not at all alike. That's like saying the 1927 matte proof Canberra florin is like a genuine reproduction because it was officially copied off the Canberra florin in 1927. They become different things, the matte proof is a rarity in its own right.

This cost me $111 yet nothing special in the A4 paper roll Maybe a couple of MS63-64 coins , the rest were MS60-62 but nothing like this coin .

Most should have been around MS63-64 with the odd MS65. There shouldn't be any MS60-61 - that's a very uncharacteristic grade for a 1964 penny.
It wasn't sold as an original roll, just as 50 uncirculated coins - if it's an original roll I'll list it as a penny roll rather than as 50 pennies - sorry if I wasn't clear about this - if you're not happy with them I'm happy for you to send them back for a refund.

When I'm noodling I keep an eye out for any coins in much better than usual, circulated condition for their age. Amazing the earlier years that sometimes turn up, obviously very little circulated. My idea is to make up good sets of circulated coins for posterity (or maybe sell on eBay if I duplicate them).
Here is a sample of some $1 coins picked up in the last week. A couple of NCLT included.
These are all minimal wear, negligible marking and nice colour -the darkest looking ones are actually the brightest (don't know why the scanner does that).

sweet
would that scrape in a red designation?
I think its a 50 / 50 chance, maybe even less but not too fussed, its a very pretty coin.
It has nice brightness over the coin but I think the reverse might let it down a touch.
I was trying the pics with 2 lights, and I've been saying it for ages but I hope to get a macro lens soon to increase the working distance so I get the lights in over the coin.
I reckon it will get red.
Nice.

Got the grade back last night.
MS63RB. I don't think it missed RD by much
[attachment=2942]
well done
so any of those pcgs photos look a dull gold - it's weird!
I had some grades come through recently.
Pics are mostly awful.
Grades were slightly on the harsh side.
If it were mine I would maybe resubmit that 42 halfpenny.
I probably won't submit any time soon, It would be great to know if the colour is determined by the graders or using some other electronic methods.
I managed to pick up an MS64RB already graded however it is no where near as bright as the MS63RB.
For comparison, this was the MS64RD sold a few months back on Pacific Rim Auctions.
[attachment=2943]
RB covers "between 5% and 95% original red color" so you can get a lot of variety in coins graded RB.
I wish they would use some sort of reliable method in determining the amount of red/orange.
The 5% to 95% thing is rubbish.
Here are a couple of BN coins:
The 1920 is virtually full orange on the reverse.
To my eye they look RB not BN.
I think part of the problem is that the yanks have copper pennies and we had bronze pennies, so ours start out not as red as their coins and their eyes think our coins have lost intensity of colour (tarnish) when they are orange and not red.

To me the note has been cut/clipped at that corner.
May I suggest deliberately?
With the curved tip part of the defect looking so neat, I don't think it's been cut, as the 'cut' if that's what it is, would be darn near impossible to be so evenly shaped if done by hand.
So, if it's a clip, what piece of equipment would make a 'clip' of that shape? :dontknow: Anyone got any ideas?
Could the corner have been folded when it was cut/clipped? Any sign of creasing there Kel?
If the corner had been creased prior to the clip/cut, there would most likely be evidence of the fold, plus the defect would also have a bit right at the tip that would make a V, not a perfectly curved tip if you know what I mean.
I cant see any creases any were on this note . ,, kel ,,
[attachment=2946][attachment=2947]
Hmmm, with the close-up the tip of the defect now appears to be sort of straight, so I'm gunna go quiet now, still none the wiser how it might have been done. :dontknow:
Perhaps a scalpel? Woodworkers and modellers have plenty of those.
In the bottom of the last 2 images Kel posted, look at the edges of the defect. The ink appears to be missing. Any type of cut wouldn't remove the ink. :dontknow:

I always keep an eye out for the varieties like this. In this case the 2x2 had a grade (aUNC) and price that as a Perth penny would have made it overpriced, but with the Melbourne obverse it was worth it.

Now what's going on here, is the top circle something like a stuck thru wire and the bottom a die crack???? or am I just seeing thing :scratch_one-s_head:
what you look for on this coins - is where the denticles are pointing to the A in gratia and the I in Elizabeth (the lettering). In the hybrid 1956 y - they are pointing this way. In the 1955 y hybrid thy point between the denticles
if they are die cracks - they are of no significance for this error AJ - the die used for the obverse is what matters
