I have been looking for a 1992 $1 Roo for a while now, has anyone seen one in their travels? Must be as scarce as hens teeth.
hi lacey , i don't think there was a $1 Roo minted for that year ??
http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/ram-designs/1dollar.cfm
mint says yes there was, lol
there telling porky pies , no 92 roo it's a mistake , they can't count lol
G'day Lacey & Belly, Apparently they re-struck the 1984 & 1985 MOR's coins in 1992 for the 5 coin $1 sets they put out,but definitely no 1992 dated $1 MOR's were ever struck.
This is the set i'm referring to http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SCARCE-1984-1992-1-FIVE-COIN-UNC-DOLLAR-SET-FOLDER-CANBERRA-MINT-SALE-/261098951532?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item3ccab5d36c#ht_500wt_1288
Someone posted this on CCF recently: http://downies.com/aca/PDFs/310/Auction_310_SESSION_6.pdf (see lot 2493)

I seen that post too, but is a case of ill believe it when I see it.
The RAM says "0.008 million minted". That's only 8,000 coins, a smaller mintage than the Barcelona dollar that same year. If they existed and were released for circulation, they'd be one of the true rarities of the decimal series.
Alas, all the evidence seems to indicate they don't, they weren't and they aren't.
As others have said here and elsewhere, they appear to be mis-counting some made-for-sets-only MOR coins that actually bore the dates 1984 and 1985, even though they were struck in 1992.
As for the "error coin", it doesn't really count. Why would a coin ever be struck on a "partially prepared proof blank" during regular production? It sounds more like a "mint sport" than a genuine mistake.
OK thanks every body. I take it there are no 1992 $1 roo.
Still, the 2007 roo $1 will be kinda scarce, as only made for mint sets. At least I have a few of them.
Had been thinking along similar lines Lacey and have tucked away some 2007 MORs as well. They seem to be drawing a bit of a premium on Ebay. Haven't seen many sold this year but those that have been are averaging around $20.
Pedro
Hi Pedro,
I hope the price goes over the cost of the mint set, then I would at least get my money back.
I find it amazing that the '86 and '87 mint sets are really expensive. I commented on this in another forum. Why are ppl so eager to pay more for '85 with the scarce 5c but the other mint sets sell for cheap. People are funny creatures.

I don't think someone would spend money on it unless that's what it was.

Most likely.
Hi Lacey,
The sale prices for 2007 sets vary quite widely on Ebay, generally between $15 - $28 (including postage).
A buyer paid $46.50 for a set a few weeks ago but that was well over the norm and some sellers have managed to make sales in the early thirties with Buy It Now prices (again including postage). At the moment prices are very inconsistent on these sets with no evident trend.
Pedro
$46.50? WOW that's a lot. oh well, I hope the coin itself has gone up wildly in 10 yrs so I could make a nice profit.
Re 1992 $1 roo I haven't seen a image ever I don't believe they exist
Hi guys. I saw this on the rammint site last year and made some enquiries with the mint. I was told by one of the staff who worked at the time that there is no reason to believe the records are incorrect but there is also the only way to prove they exist is to look in circulation. I went through around 15,000 coins at the time but didn't find one. I did some calculations on how many there are in circulation 8,000 divided by total $1 coins and it was something like 1 1992 MOR per every 150,000 coins so it will take a while to go through that many. I think they are around and the auction listing confirms my suspicion.
How many do you want?
Just kidding.:taunt:

Could you please explain this again? Admittedly, I am tired, but I just don't understand!
1992 sets had 1984 coins?
There absolutely no 1992 mor made, even for mint sets?
*Embarrassed* :blush2:
~Naomi.
I think the 1992 set mentioned contained five different dollar coins, including 1984 (and 1988 too I think).
The mint set 1992 $1 coins commemorated the Barcelona Olympics so there shouldn't have been any 1992 Mob of Roos $1 coins made.
If the 1992 $1 coin was made with the figures the Mint says of 8000 then we would be seeing them in the market, the 2000 $1 mule is said to have an estimated mintage of around 6000 & you see them all the time so would'nt it stand to reason that there would be as many or more 1992 $1's up for sale if they existed,i don't believe they exist.
This is my understanding of how the mix-up regarding 1992 Mor coins came about.
In 1992, a set of 5 x $1 coins was released. It contains 1 x 1984 MoR, 1 x 1985 Mor, 1x 1986 Yr of Peace, 1 x 1988 Bi-cent and 1 x 1992 Barcelona.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1984-1992-AUSTRALIAN-ONE-DOLLAR-5-COIN-SET-/170905057908?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item27cabc3a74
The 8000 coins that are shown on the RAM site as ostensibly being 1992 MoR coins, were in fact re-strikes of the 1984 Mor and/or 1985 MoR that were needed to make up these "One Dollar Five Coin Set" in 1992.
If there really were 8000 x 1992 MoR coins, some of them would have surfaced in the last 20 years. The fact that none have, indicates that the 8000 x 1992 MOR coins reported on the RAM site are in fact re-strikes of prior years coins.
1992 MoR coins simply do not exist.
As I understand it, the MoRs in the five coin set were re-strikes, i.e., MoRs dated 84, 85 struck in 1992.
You beat me Nevol. :-)
Thanks Guys!
So easy to understand now, yet my brain was telling me we suddenly had overdate coins in 1992 that were 1984/5 coins!
I've never actually seen that 5 coin set before, so I've learnt 2 new things today! A day not wasted :)
So, if there weren't too many Barcelona coins minted, why do I find so many of them in circulation?!
You're not finding Barcelona (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/11/australian-dollar-coins-1992-barcelona.html) dollars in circulation.
This topic is easily very confusing.[/u]
Now I'm confused and having a Paulette moment. I have 4 x Barcelona $1 taken from circulation.
give me 1 :P
As with NCLTs the occasional one or two do slip into circulation. Somebody spending their inheritance??

You've done alright. How many $1 have you looked through to find those?
I remember back before I'd ever bought a catalogue wondering why I could never find a 1992 $1.

lol I'm glad you see the 2000 $1 mule all the time. I have never seen one at all, or do you mean see them all the time on ebay?

Where did you get that figure from?
On this site, it says there are a lot more Barcelona $1s?
http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/06/australian-dollar-coins-1991-to-1995-issues-and-mintages.html
You’re getting confused 2 different subjects, the 1992 MOR (mob of roos) “doesn’t exist†and the 1992 Barcelona
I have the RAM annual report from YE 30 June 1992 in front of me and admittedly it's the only one in the 1990's that I have.
It does however say in the circulating coin production section that .008 (million pieces) of 1992 aluminium bronze 1 dollars were minted. Over the page there is another section of proof and special coins where it has 6,913 of $1 uncirculated. But without the other annual reports I couldn't say if those numbers are included in what makes up the mintages that we know from Macca's or even if they are MOR's or the commemorative Barcelona.
The mintages on the Australian Coin Collecting Blog come from all information available including RAM annual reports and reference books.
OK, I'm following again, I took it to mean that not many more than 8000 Barcelona's were minted.
Ta!

I think I bought about a 100 from Goldseeker. The remaining 223 I found in pokie venues and noodling from the bank. I have searched maybe a few hundred thousand which is nowhere near how many Golderseeker searched at the Casino.
Incidentally, one of the Bacelonas I found in a $1 roll from the bank was IMHO uncirculated. The beauty of it though was a big BIG die crack. I'll have to pull it out from wherever it is hidden and post a piccie.

maybe thats why it was in the roll. The Mint wouldn't want that in a mint set, so threw it in a roll instead.
I used to buy coins from the local bank but had to give them a reason why I wanted them and what I was gonna use them for.
I stopped after a while. I got sick of having to telling them.
I was the one who posted that auction for that 1992 $1 roo coin, even through all the doubt I do believe they exist, l will have to keep searching :)
Still no evidence they exist, haven't seen a photo even
Goldseeker is going to ask again at RAM this long weekend apparently
It's very obvious there is no such coin as a 1992 $1 MOR
I went to the RAM this Aussie Day Weekend and all I saw to speak to were the Mint Shop ladies and gents and no prodiction staff etc. Sorry to inform you all but I drew a total blank on this one.

RAM Mint Shop is staffed by salespeople Goldie and no production staff would have been there over the long weekend anyway:dodgy:
