Title: 10 cent errors
Post by: Nevol on February 18, 2013, 11:35:27 AM
Last night I finished noodling $200 x 10 cents and found two Rev cud types I've never seen before.
They are on 2009 and 2010 coins as shown on the cudless image below.
I found 5 x 2009 type (1 also had 3 Obv Hair Cuds + cuds on 10), and 8 x 2010 type.

Yellow/Red Arrow - 2009
Blue/Green Arrow â€" 2010

Just so you know where to look:

Crikey Nevol, I would need ice packs on my eyes after going through 2000 coins in that much detail:swoon:

Thanks Rob & accumulator, I'm quite pleased with the haul I got. :yahoo:
Wait till you see my entire list of coins I pulled out.  Hardly worth taking the bags back, I kept so many. :whistle2:

Considering the reason for the noodling was mainly to get some 2011 10C coins, which I did, but only 6 of the little sods, a few of which are going on a journey.  :winkextra:

Title: RE: 10 cent errors
Post by: Nevol on February 20, 2013, 10:28:05 AM
The one at the top of the list is IMO the most valuable, 2006 -Tilted Partial collar.
Most of the others are only of interest/value to a dedicated error collector like me.

I only decided to noodle $200 in 10c as I was after some 2011 coins, and I got 6 of those, so anything else was a bonus.

The list will give other error collectors an idea of what's out there waiting to be discovered and as I mentioned in another post, I found 2 Rev cud types I'd never seen before, so I'm sort of chuffed with them.  :winkextra:

This is another new version of a cud on the 0, it's a 2010 coin and has 2 small cuds on the bottom of the 0, as well as an outline of a cud on the top left.

Here are some shots of one of my 10c Die clashes. I have 3 like this, 1 x 2001 and 2 x 2005. Others years with much less clash to be seen are 2003, 2006, and 2008.

Rev clashes can be found, but it's nowhere near as good as the obverse ones.  Rev years are I've found are 1988, 2000, 01, 03, 04,  05, 06, 07, 08.

Just found a 2008 with the same type of cud on the feathers as in 1999. This one's towards the base of the feathers, and a similar size.

And again on a 2012, although on the example I have, the cud only fills half the gap, coming up from the bottom feather. Never seen a 1999 do that, so it may be quite a different die break. Anyway, I'll see about taking a pic of all three tomorrow.

Please tell me how the heck you can spot so smaller details that is different from the norm.   Have you got Maganifaction Eyes or something?

Regardless, all nice finds.

I can only find the larger type errors.

I shall post some pictures of some of my errors a little later.

All my noodling is done with a 5x Loupe that has a 26mm lens and I can see the entire side of any coin, even a Crown. I do my noodling sitting in my favourite armchair with a soft light coming from behind my left shoulder.

I have paid up to $9 each for some of my Loupes, of which I have about 15, but I only ever use the 26mm ones, and would not use anything else. It has two 5x lenses, but I only ever use one. A few years ago, these cost $2.95 at either Dollars & Sense or Dollar Dazzlers, but they might cost a bit more now.

The hinge tends to become very loose so I just wrap an elasticed hair band around it as many time as it will go.  Rubber bands will serve the same purpose, but they deteriorate and end up sticky.

We use magnification, Goldy. I have a x10 loupe which is excellent, even with my degraded eyes.

Apologies for not posting those cud pics yet, I've been a bit AWOL, and I'll try and do it tomorrow. Meanwhile, I found a very nice 1999 tail cud which looks like it was struck through the cud. The bottom half has been flattened, though oddly the detail of the feather rib is visible. Almost as if the cud broke off to reveal the intact coin beneath, though that is of course impossible.

Y'know Nevol, I've never ever been able to get the hang of that style of loupe. No idea why, I just seem incapable of operating them. The type I use has the clear bottom half, and is used for looking at slides on a light table.

Fulvio, Does it look like this one where it seems the whole ‘fat’ cud was there initially, but the bottom bit came away and left just the outline?

My theory of this is that there are two sections of the ‘Fat’ cud that  melded together over time and that this is a precursor to the melding.

Surely a quick look at the above coin would reveal that cud without any magnification at all?

Yes that one would be hard to miss, but  I can't even make out the dates on the smaller coins without magnification, so I'd be flat out seeing most cuds, die cracks, partial collars, die clashes etc etc. :winkextra:

Here, finally, is a (crappy) pic:

Three 1999's, the middle one being the one with the break or strikethrough, then the 2008 and 2012. Sorry for the focus on the 2012 closeup... light was terrible, and I was having trouble focussing.

If that IS a piece of the cud broken off, I'd like to know how its possible to have detail underneath it. It just doesn't look right to me. Perhaps I need to study the mechanics of cud formation in greater detail?

Oh, and Goldy, while you can see these cuds unmagnified (its about equivalent to looking at the above image I guess), can you see all eight cuds, the doubling on two of the 1999's, the spike in the middle of the flat part of the tail on the top 1999, or the strikethrough to the right of the 2012 cud? I certainly can't without magnification. :)

Maybe I should put more effort into looking for these errors as all I really do is lay about 20 coins at a time in front of me on the desk, heads side first, browse thoroughly over them without any magnification, once dates and errors have been checked I flip the coins over and do the same but with a little more attention to detail as there is more to look for on the reverse I reckon. When all coins are back in the bags I than get out the magnifier and squiz at what I think I have found.

So pretty much I find all my errors with the NEKED eye unless I really need to look at a coin during search. It doesn't really strain my eyes at all not using the magnifier I guess I just have good scanners  lol..

What kind of camera do you use Nevol? Just asking because I was looking at buying the same kind of loupe as the one you pictured but I just didn't think it would do the job but looking at yourr photos I guess I am wrong:dodgy:, they seem to go alright by the pics.

I see in post #30 that Photobucket has somehow stuffed up all of my 10c Die Crack images so I'll re-do them all in Tinypic and fix the links up when I can.

I have not even attempted to do anything in PB for ages as it always screws up when I'm in the middle of doing something, so I don't even bother with it any more!  It has to be the most frustrating site I've ever been on.

Post #30 has now been fixed.

Why don't you just use the gallery here?
Or your own webspace... every ISP offers at least SOME with every account.

The gallery on this site is "AWSOME" and dead easy to use (Even I can do it):good:

That's nice. Bit unusual to find something like this. Most are either a slight doubling around one or more letters, or massive cudding around the entire legend. This fits neatly between the two extremes, and I would think that suggests the dies disintegrated fairly rapidly from this stage.

BTW, I reckon we could flood an entire forum with flaw pics. We must have many thousands of examples between us. :)

I could spend all day every day taking piccies,  and I reckon after a year I'd have about 20% of my errors imaged, but probably another year to get them all cropped, tinypic'd and posted.

From what you've said re the number of coins you have, I reckon you'd need somewhere between 10 & 20 years. :winkextra:

And the rest...

The trouble is, every minute spent documenting is a minute not spent finding. Yet unless you document, you can never find anything again.

Which of course is a massive problem. That's why I'm investing time in developing systems that will help the process along. Tons of work up front, but with luck it will turn the actual cataloguing into something a barrel of monkeys could do. And as a byproduct, it should produce the database that Goldy requested all those many months ago, and which I foolishly promised to attempt. :dodgy:

Nevol, you've posted some fabulous errors today, thank you for going to all the effort.

I'm with McDuck on the 2008 metal under LI, it's very unusual.

I actually found the first of those probably in 2010 as I have several images I did on 15/7/10 and back then I had 4, so I guess I have 5 all up. The one I just posted was found some time during the last 6 months.

Yes, the "green" is a pain. Generally I am getting a bit tougher on these. If it comes off after a soak in water it stays. Otherwise it has to be something more special error-wise for keeping else it's back into the pond.

The cud error in the last image here is (I think) a new one to me.  Might have to have another look at my 1982 10c, but I don't think I kept many.

Thanks.  Just finding that 2 of the 3 1982 10 cent coins I have (in good condition) had faults I was rather stoked haha.  Might post a few other smaller errors on other coins some time getting to distracted with other stuff tonight.
