2 more for the $1 album, I love these chunky little silver proofs :good: :dance2:
[attachment=1265]
Lovely coins Trout- I have a feeling your area is now the third largest silver mine in the Country.!!
On my last count I have 146 differant standard size $1 coins, That is most likely only half of the buggers if I am lucky.
I am not tempted to look at PP's website on the dollar issues (that would be far too scarey)
I am slowly catching up with them as I didn't get fair dinkum with decimal coins untill 2 years ago.
Between the buisness strike, proofs, silver proofs and nclt coins, There is a whole new world of collecting out there for us die hard pre decimal buggers :yahoo: :dance2:
I find the $1 and 50 cent collections the most challenging = the most fun :dance2:
Yes can be challenging. I don't collect proofs. Love my )1 and 50c albums
Quote from: 'Bigfellani5' pid='8187' dateline='1360753797'Yes can be challenging. I don't collect proofs. Love my )1 and 50c albums
Yep 10 cents downwards is a little Booring:angel:
I love the look of the proofs and silver proofs next to the buisness strikes in the album, It tends to make the page come alive :yahoo:
I want to get every differant $1 and 50 cent coin ever made, It is a big challange but hay why not.
The saddest day of my life would be IF I ever finaly did complete my $1 and 50 cent albums in minimum grade choice Uncirc .
I am enjoying the thrill of the hunt and there is so much to hunt for at the moment :yahoo:
I completed my pre decimal sets ages ago and got stuck into the decimal stuff a couple of years agothinking "dead easy" bugger was I way off the mark in that assumption :dash1:
With the decimal cions it is NOT unreasonable to aspire for the top gaded coins. with the predecimal coins that is simply a pipe dream.
I do however (if I have the funds and can find a better coin) always try and upgrade my predecimal sets :good:
I have had so much fun over the last couple of years getting together my decimal sets I have sadly neglected my predecimal sets, BUGGER IT I'm enjoying myself and thats what it is all about as far as I am concerned :dance2:
Another 1 for the Dollar album :dance2:

Nclt or circulating?
Unlimited mintage
NCLT-Same as all other carded coin/foldered coins. Further, even Downies in Melbourne haven't got them yet.....just a new release issue.
I cant see there being much interest in that coin.
I got the 2004 masterpieces in silver set today.
These are the stand out coins in the set :ok:
[attachment=1737][attachment=1738]
[attachment=1739][attachment=1740]
The Mintage numbers for the 2004 set is only 8.250, so these coins are pretty unique :yahoo:
I may be a bit weird but there is just something about the standard sized $1 coins that gets to me
I have just finished putting away the new coins I got today and did a head count in the album.
I now have 180 different $1 coins and 29 of these are silver proof coins.
I have a looong way to go to complete this set but I AM slowly starting to get quite a comprehensive set together :dance2:
If my records are correct Trout, you should end up with 35 Proof Silver $1 coins of 25 mm diameter and 233 Alum Br $1 coins. I am not sure how many of the larger ones are available.
One that you will have to get is the Smithy $1 coin with the foldered $20.00 Note. The coin is not available by its self.

Which is a pain in the arse because I don't really collect banknotes :dash1:
2 new babies for the Dollar album

The dollars in those sets are always really crappy. Whatever they did to apply that hologram wasn't thought out very well.

I have a feeling there is a large reserve of copper in the well in trout's backyard. Would need substantial refining to eliminate all the green and black.

anyway I only paid $55 for the set , at least the other coins will fill some holes in the other albums:angel:

Does anyone have a list? I have one (consists of 232 coins, only 9 silver) but its incomplete. It's compiled by trawling eBay and adding coins as I went. Also, I haven't included proof coins because they are usually the same as the Mint Sets. If I include the proofs then my list would be similar in size at least to Goldseeker's records.

dolphin , shark , seahorse , biscuit star ,. what about
clown fish and longfin banner fish .. ,, kel ,,
Thanks Kel, I'm time-strapped and on my ipad, ATM. I will update tomorrow and re-post the link. Also, if proofs are to be included I should add the coins frm the Wedding Sets.

Your list does not show the early Portable press $1 coins or don't you collect them? (They appear to be the same as the heavy press but after close examination, they can be identified).

May I suggest you edit your list by adding a first column for Coin Number. That way one can advise you that you are missing something easier or a particular coin should not be in your list. Further, your list has a Medallion Issue in it.
Your list does not only show the standard 25 mm Alum br coins but larger diameters as well and proofs. It is a bit hard to work out precisely what you have. Would be much easier if you provided a numbered list of 25mm coins, silver/alum br proofs etc.

PPH's list isn't intended to be a check list and doesn't include any medals, Perth Mint coins, and only includes silver proofs if they were also minted in AlBr and are 25mm.

Geezuz, now I remember why I decided to go only with the common $1 and the main out of the 4's, as in Television, keeping the MM 'TV' only. And that's why I am starting to list the rest for sale. It's getting way too expensive, and I have to pay for my granny flat or we'll be out in the cold.

I see the PP list as a reference which I will refer to probably quite often. My list is in a simple spreadsheet and easily configured. I'll do some more work on this tomorrow and post an update. It's an important topic for me since the 215 coins I have cost a few bob and the ones I don't have are probably the most expensive.
I added the missing sea series and did some tidying up. Also added a Silver Proof Harbour Bridge.

Here are some you are missing for 2013:
Black Caviar Coloured Coin from Card
Black Caviar From PNC - Non coloured coin
Dot The kangaroo - From baby Mint Set
Kangaroo $1 Coin from Annual Mint Set.
Please be advised that the VG Press coins, although the same, the reeding position is total different alignment between the two press.
I am still going through your list but will PM you with others that you seem to have missed.

OK thanks, I will add those. I'm going through the PP big list up to year 2000, atm and finding several coins to add. Now up to 263 coins on my list.
Does anyone know if there are 2 types of Victoria Cross from 2000? They came in the VC Folder and a PNC issue but are the coins actually different.

I know precisely how difficult it is to make a list of all ones coins. It takes time and patience. I scan every coin and put the scans into an excel work book. it has taken months to do and I am still improving the work done to date.
You bet Goldseeker I have a pretty good spreadsheet for my coins as well. I do try to spend as much time with the coins rather than hunched over a keyboard like I am today. As someone said this dollar coin list I'm working on is a checklist - I'm hoping it will be finnished today. I'm up to 2004 atm and 273 coins.
I notice we have 2 flavours of S,B,M&E m/marks for the Eureka Stockade coins. I take it the portable press does not pack as much punch as the one's at the RAM?
Also, the portable press is not the same as the machine that stamped my coins at the Easter Show?
I have another 17 dollar coins in the mail so that takes my total up to 204, 27 of which are silver proofs so far :ok:
Nice one trout. 297 on the check list, including a couple of gold proofs. Moving on to year 2007 now. I wanna get this near sorted by this afternoon.
Please take a look : One Dollar Check List (http://users.tpg.com.au/r9453//Bucks.pdf)
There are 349 entries, including 53 silver and 6 gold. I have a couple of questions:
Is there a 2011 PNC Bush Babies Bilby? Thats one I got from :ebay: it may not even belong on the list.
In 2010 was there a Brisbane 4 coin set with different counterstamp that should be added to the 9 non-silver Australian Coinage I already have listed?
:dontknow:

I'm pretty sure they are all 25mm, I spent most of today cross checking here:
Australian Coin Collecting Blog (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/) - I did have 1 or 2 coins like the one mentioned above but hopefully they've been weeded out.
I was just looking at the 1940 Shilling reproduced in the 1999 Masterpieces, which has $1 denomination but its slightly smaller (23.6 like a shilling) so doesn't qualify.
Edit: There are some iffy inclusions like the so-called Shallow mintmarks from 2004 to 2007. There must be a story behind them but I don't know what it is. Also, note I have included Proof and Unc plus the Wedding Set coins described as specimen.

It isn't. Regardless of what some people might think. It changes all the time.
under good instruction i.e. someone who knows more about coins than us
we have trialled it ourselves at the gallery - doesn't hold up

but the die errors ... well that is another definitive way to pick the difference - if you know which press it came from in the first place

I should add to this that if a press was set up at a show and the dies were not changed during the show or the collar die wasn't moved then conceivably the reeding *could* be the same for all coins struck at that show. But the only way to be sure is to either see the maintenance records for the press at the show or to own all the coins.
Shouldn't the silver & gold coins be part of a separate list?
As per the Macca's book.
Only say this because they are made from a different metal &
they are worth more than a dollar, even thought they share the same face value.

It would be easy enough to separate the silver and gold. I wouldn't do it based on value. Some silver coins are worth about $50 where the 2000 Victoria Cross goes for more than double that.

So far I have secured
1997 large head Sir Kingsford Smith silver proof
2004 Proof (Holographic coin)
2005 Gallipoli silver proof
2008 MOR Proof And Silver proof coins
2010 year of the tiger silver proof
2011 rams head silver proof
2011 Dame Joan Southerland
2012 Wheat proof and business strike coins
2012 year of the farmer
2012 International year of Co-operatives
2013 Black Caviar colored and plain coins
Nice work trout. Is that 2012 Wheat proof the one from the 2 coin set? I just checked australian-threepence.com and couldn't see a 2008 MOR Silver Proof listed there, does it come from a single box or a set? The 2004 Holographic Proof is not listed at australian-threepence.com either any details on that one?

Cheers, that's one more silver for my check list, 55 silver and 6 gold. I had the holographic coin listed as a coloured coin like the ones from 2002 & 2003. Looking at it now its actually quite stunning. Is it the only one issued? The other lists stands at 288 coins.
Looking at the back issues of the Mint Issue magazine on the RAM website it shows the 2008 masterpieces set was a 2 coin job relating to aviation ie. no MOR. There was a silver proof year set but that has the Planet Earth design in it.

Yes you are correct, my stuff up.
The 2008 set has the planet earth coin(that's why I bought it) coin in it.
It also has the planet earth Silver proof coin as well :good:
PP recons the finish on the holographic coins are pretty crappy, I hope mine is an exception to that rule.
"PP recons the finish on the holographic coins are pretty crappy, I hope mine is an exception to that rule."
Compared to regular proof coins they might be. I wonder if its got something to do with achieving the holographic affect? Talk about rainbow colours in pennies, this coin has vertical rainbow stripes which are apparent as you move it about under light, while at the same time the stripes remain // to the axis of the coin. The roos, depending upon how you hold the coin can each appear with different colours. Its a trip man!

No worries interest, your idea was a good one. I separated the spreadsheet into gold, silver and alloy (AlBr).
Just looking at list & notice Rolf Harris in at #174
Should that be in this list?
(Or should Rolf be on another list down at the Police station?) also
2009 is missing the 500 Specimen quality MOB coins for Berlin Money Fair. (acknowledged in maccas pp154 2009c)
I don't count the 1999 shilling as being in my Dollar set because of the size difference, the same goes for the Perth mint oversize coins .
I do have the 1999 "Memories" set but that is in a whole different part of my collections :ok:
Thank you interest, Rolf has been removed from the list. I wonder if the 2009 Specimen MOR (Berlin Money Fair) is the same as the MOR Wedding Set? For consistency I assumed that it was and added an entry for that. The Wedding Sets with specimen coins were issued from 2002 to 2009.
I just noticed the australian-threepence (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2010/03/australian-dollar-coins-2009-issues-and-mintages.html) has the 500 Berlin World Money Fair coins listed as circulation not specimen. I should acknowledge australian-threepence.com and the RAM Mint Issue archive as the primary sources for my list.
Here is the updated One Dollar Check List (http://users.tpg.com.au/r9453//Bucks.pdf). I put the gold and silver coins on separate pages.
:iagree: (no Smilie?) Strictly standard size one dollar coins.
RAM report 08-09 stated that it was uncirculated. I double checked it's in front of me now.
Hmm but also says wedding sets 08 and 09 are unc as well....we know they are specimen.
I don't think I have one of these in my collection, if I recall were they Downies issue as they were a single coin.
THE BOOK IS WRONG..surprise surprise. bloody wedding set UNC my goat.
specimen is technically specimen uncirculated so they've just omitted a word
it's amazing how one word can make all the difference :)
Quote from: 'purplepennyhunter' pid='16287' dateline='1369617449'RAM report 08-09 stated that it was uncirculated. I double checked it's in front of me now.
Hmm but also says wedding sets 08 and 09 are unc as well....we know they are specimen.
I don't think I have one of these in my collection, if I recall were they Downies issue as they were a single coin.

A ha, but does it look specimen, Downies may have just written that for a marketing bonus? They have also written "BU" which stands for brilliant uncirculated..

Then whacked the whole thing in what looks like PVC :dash1:

Yep, spot on.
So the certificate says "offered exclusively by the RAM" at the show but I don't recall ever seeing them not in the Downies flip. I don't think the RAM would have packaged them just in the capsule. If they did, then the Downies packaging is for less than 500 and there are more maybe in a box with a different COA.
Are all the Berlin sets specimens ?
First they just put a different sleeve on regular mint sets that said Berlin Money Fair, like the ANDA show overprints. Then they printed the logo on the outer box of the fine silver year sets. Not very exciting really.
But there is merit in the question here as the RAM took 500 coins to the Berlin show. The same year was the last year gem unc coins were in wedding sets. So did they take regular mint set coins or specimen unc wedding set coins? My money is on regular unc coins, it just doesn't look like a wedding set coin in the pics.
I can tell you that the one in the photo has a scratch on it.
The day I received this from Downies I rung to say that the coin has a scratch, all they could do was to offer me a refund as they had no more left, were not getting more so could not send me out a replacement.
I decided to keep it, scratch & all. I think the cost was $39.00
Yes it is in PVC I figure the capsule it is in should hopefully protect it, I don't want to open it, because as soon as I do that it then loses all it's provenance??.
Mint Issue 79 describes the 2009 Wedding Set as "With gem finish this set of six 2009 uncirculated coins, like a well loved spouse, will keep its attractive appearance for many years to come." Good grief!
I thought the 2009 Berlin Money Fair issue were (Unc) mint sets like the Astronomy ones issued here. Were the 500 $1 coins like the one interest has in addition to the sets?
that must be why I am so attractive ..............
Put a picky up and we can then score the view out of 10: Your move............

I have the 2011 berlin and standard mint sets at home and the coins are of the same standard as far as I can remember.
I will have a closer look at them on Friday :ok:

Thank you trout for the scan. I take ausjack's point. In some cases I think we might collect coins in spite of the designs. Is the 2008 Planet Earth $1 coin designed by Vladimir Gottwald? Maybe there is an explanation somewhere for what its all about. Fwiw, here's my take on it. We have hands reaching out to us from the 4 corners of the globe. There is a rock that looks like a football at the centre of our continent. Actually it more or less covers SA. The top end has been rent asunder by a giant croc. I have no idea how to interpret the east and west coast designs.

I agree with both you and AJ, the design is CRAP but if you want to complete a dollar set you have to take "the Good, the Bad and the just plain UGLY" If it is a standard size $1 coin and minted by R.A.M I will collect it.
I am about 80% of the way to completing this set and I am not about to let a simple case of aesthetics stop me now :laugh2:
The 50 cent coins are the same , there are some "Butt ugly" coins and some outstanding coins in these issues but that never stops a true (obsessive) collector from getting them
just look at the 34-35 Melbourne Florin, Worst designed florin issued and yet it is the most expensive to get .

I looked through quite a few of these coloured Black Caviar coins yesterday to pick a good one and I don't think they've done a great job with aligning the colour. Lots were out of whack.

Keeping up with NEW issues is dead easy :ok:
Catching up with old issues is quite difficult and expensive, If I had of kept up with the coins as they were issued I would of spent a heap less and had no difficulty getting the coins.
I am slowly filling the gaps in my 50 and 20 cent albums as I acquire the $1 coins I need as well.
I think that when I have the $1 up to date the 50 cent coins will be a far bigger challenge :ok:
Once I have the $1 Saracens subdued I will embark on a NEW Crusade to quell the 50 cent devils :diablo:
I was wondering if you count the platinum and all the other sorts :)

The Gold and plat coins are way beyond my pockets at the moment :ok:
Maybe in a couple of years when I have everything "Shipshape" I may venture into the gold area.
At the moment the standard metals and silver are taking up all my resources and funds :dash1:
BS ya got plenty of funds to pinch my wedding sets :laugh2:

I have many many coins still in the original packaging simply because I have either bought too many, I like the design and get extras or they are gifted and I leave them as they are out of respect (If asked to) :ok:
I even have 2 coins still in their slabs Mate
I have SO blown my coin budget this month but I am only 5 coins short of completing the $1 silver proofs (Not counting the 6 silver proof mint sets I still need), But all the coins in Maccas have been covered except 5 of the lunar series coins ( which I will get next week).
It has been a challenge and a thrill getting these, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and I am on the home straight :yahoo:

todays count on the $1 25mm coins
54 silver proofs.
30 pad printed
35 M.O.R
240 commemoratives
359 different 25mm coins, I had NO idea when I started on these that there was so many of them.
Still a long way to go on the ali bronze coins :dash1:
I have all the different commemoratives but I still have quite a few of the different mintmarks to hunt up.
The silver proofs are only 5 short and the pad printed are complete.
The MOR coins are short;
1995 uncirculated
1998,2005,2010 and 2011 proof coins.
I only started to get "Dinkum" with these coins about a year ago and it has been an interesting quest so far, I will almost be sorry when I get them all "Up to Date"

Trout: I take it your numbers posted earlier include the Perth Mint oversize issues as well?
A $1 coin for every single occassion is one thing but the oversized coins don't do anything for me.
to be honest though, I do have 1, and thats the top one of this coin http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2005-1-LIVING-ICON-Kangaroo-Australian-NZ-Coin-Set-/181167497828?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item2a2e6ca264

Also I include all the proof issues as well.

I do quite like some of the New Zealand large $1 issues.

The 2006 50 years of television silver proof "S" mint marked coin is listed in Maccas but not in Rennics.
Also the mintage figures are pretty strange.
Maccas list each of the "A" and "S" mintmark coins at 3,859 and yet at the bottom of that particular coin description it reads;
"A" Mintmark proof silver coins launched at the Canberra ANDA show February11-12-2006. A total of 1500 coins were released at the 2006 ANDA shows in Canberra and Sydney.
So a few questions arise from this;
1/ was the mintage figure for these coins 3859 for each of them or for both of them?
2/ was the mintage only 1500 ?
3/ Does the "S" mintmark coin actually exist?

The 1500 coin issue was supposed to 6000 coin issue so that at the Brisbane Show 1500 coins would be issued, then at the Sydney Show another 1500 to be issued, then Melbourne Show 1500 to be issued and I am not sure where the other 1500 was to be sold.
I remember the discussion that the then Forum had where and several others was to try and get a full set, that is one from each show for our collections. Because of the numbers on the certificate, it would be easy to ascertain what show that particular coin was issued at.
However, this idea fell through when not all coins were sold at the first show.

This is the coa that came with my "A" mintmarked coin.
From what I can ascertain there was NO "S" mintmarked coin produced.
With this one being such a low number I imagine that it was purchased originally an the Canberra show.

2/ was the mintage only 1500 ?
3/ Does the "S" mintmark coin actually exist?
Answers to questions asked are:
1. The original mintage was to be 6,000 and 1500 coins were to be released at each of four shows. IE: Brisbane, Sydney Melbourne and one other show, could be Hobart. But because not all coins were sold at the first ANDA Show, that idea fell through. So the mintage of the "A" for ANDA ism 3859.
2. No, the mintage was in actual fact 3859 as against a proposed issue of 6,000.
3. No, not is Silver proof. It does exist as an Alum Br but not silver proof.
I my qualify the above answers by saying this: What I have said above is, from my memory bank and from past discussions on a now defunct coin forum. I was going to buy a coin from each of the four ANDA Shows but that fell through after the first show, which, I believe was Brisbane ? The first show was to issue coins numbered 1-1500, the second show 1501-3000 etc for the third show 3001-4500 and the fourth show 4501-6000. This failed to eventuate.
Further, the Privy Mark "A", or Mint Mark as it was called then, was discussed to represent A = Australia or A = ANDA, and ANDA was the winner of that discussion.

this what makes collecting SOOO interesting, finding out the history regarding certain coins and how they were distributed :good:

You could put it in the top outer corner of each page, which would look good, and be a quick reference when thumbing through.
I only need 2 coins to finish my 25mm silver proof set, they are the year of the pig and the year of the Ox.
Anyone have a spare one needing a new loving home?
I have the Pig :yahoo:
Now all I have to find is that bloody Cow :dash1:

It was actually a BIN price, These coin fair continuous reeding coins are normally pretty hard to source.
This particular coin had a mintage of only 2,501 :ok:

I like great pics trout well done :)
I just picked up the "S" and "M" mintmarked dollar decade coins.
I think I have a dozen or so coins to go to get the ali/Bronze coins up to speed.
I am going to go through my dollar album and check off against Maccas and see what I need to fill any gaps.
I was going to buy 2 sovereigns this week but I will only get one and use the other funds to complete the dollar set up to date
Good luck with that Trout now is the best time to fill gaps buyers market :)
I have just noticed that I am one coin down in my silver proof dollar set, The 2003 volunteers silver proof coin :dash1:
I will rectify this A.S.A.P

A nice collection there trout but I have all of my $1 coins in DANSCO Supreme Albums. at my last count, I have 238 Alum-Br 25mm diameter coins.
I will admit I do have a couple duplicated as I keep samples from all the different packaging etc. Also heavy and portable press samples of the MM coins.
We may have to have a get together and show and tell each other.

I still have a few of the NCLT different mintmarks to get but I am working on it :good:
I used up a lot of my resources getting the silver proof coins complete, I started to keep track at the cost of those and gave it away as being FAR too scary
I only started to "Get Serious" with the 25mm coins a couple of years ago and had NO idea about what I was in for :dash1:
If I knew then what I know now , I would certainly do it all again with bells on
getting these coins together has been educational, expensive, difficult and most of all FUN :wavemulticolor:
just having a bit of a Rant here mate , But I grown to love these chunky little suckers :yahoo:
I'm still not convinced about those DANSCO albums... they're great stockbooks, since you can easily get to coins to handle them, but I suspect a 2x2 offers a better permanent home... as long as it doesn't come unstuck.
And if you guys ever get together for a show and tell, I reckon you could sell tickets... it would be an awesome show. :)

Ali bronze and silver proof versions :good:
Its only August 2013 so WTF are 2014 coins available now?
I have just added 6 more coins to this set .
5 from Bigfellani ( Cheers Mate) :yahoo:
And 1 from a 2003 silver proof set.
I am nearly there, I did a head count and came up with these numbers;
38 MOR coins
166 ali/bronze commemoratives
30 pad printed
57 silver proofs
291 in total
Does anyone have the totals of each of these 25mm coins so I can hunt for the missing "Miscreants" :)
I am not including the gold coins because that is way above my pay grade :dash1:

:hi: Hi trout, I agree there are 57 silver proofs but I have a total of 288 (MOR + ali/bronze + painted). i.e. 345 all up. I can probably break the numbers down a bit better when I get back from the shops. :bye2:

I am enjoying getting these coins and I will be a bit sad when I have got them all and am just playing "Catch up" with the new releases :(
All is good It should take me a few months to get the 40-50 coins I need anyway :dance2:
Don't take my word for it, trout. I've done my best but there could be blunders. If you want me to sort the list in different ways give me a shout.

I'm with you, I swore off errors but the more I read this forum the more I'm inclined towards them.
Eg. a 1943 Penny with big denticles, I nearly bought one today for $9 but passed.
Trout, hang onto your B c/stamp until we get this resolved. I need to check my own collection which stands at about 300.

That is one I would have to sight with my own eyes before I believe that one exists.
To be 90 degrees out of rotation then the press operator would have to align the coin well outside of the indent made for the coin in the first place particularly if the "B" counterstamp is rotated 90 degree at the place where it is normally minted.
Otherwise the "B" counterstamp would be completely somewhere else than where it should be.

Truly awesome. Easily on a par with the missing mintmark Eureka. Grats.
Oh, and if you're out of storage space, I'll happily look after it for ya. :)
I just picked up a set of rams head $1 counter stamped coins.
I don't have my list with me so I hope I need them.
OK, I apologise. But it is as I stated, not in the place where it should be.
A nice find/pickup.
The counterstrike B definitely not in intended location.
Error yes, huge premium no only worth $5 not the ridiculous price assumed by ebay sellers no way
No way runway it's worth way more than $5 :yahoo: way more. :dontknow:
$5 was RAM Ekka Price.
Dealers still want $10 each most likely the rotation will attract a premium but its not a one off
Are you aware of others runway ? & if so any numbers or where they have shown up ?

How on earth do you figure that? Have you never used a portable press? The operators generally watch them like hawks, and stuffups are few and very far between.
I'd be surprised if there were more of these.

I agree with Fulvio & Trout,if we see another i'll be amazed, they actually have a miniature camera set up on the press so the operator can watch a small screen when placing the coin in the press,so to get the alignment right.
One of the people working the press must have gotten distracted somehow & this coin did'nt get placed in the press properly & i just happened to be the "lucky" recipient. :yahoo:

I imagine someone will "Cop a Pineapple" when the RAM hears about this one :laugh2:
I don't personally collect errors but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them and have some idea of the rarity of certain items.
I would imagine that this is a pretty unique coin :yahoo:
If this is the only one and its given publicity then i can see it being worth quite a bit. Personally i wouldnt pay much for something like this but thats not to say that there isnt someone who would kill to have it.

Six grand sounds like a very reasonable value if there's only one. Even if there are only a couple.
After all, there are what, 1,700 1930 pennies? And they're in crap condition mostly.

There is absolutely NO way that this coin comparers with a 1930 penny :ok:
the 1930 penny wasn't an error but simply a low mintage coin.
EVERY collector covets that coin, What we are talking about here is an "Error" coin and not EVERY collector needs that.
The 1930 penny is desirable because it is a rare and low mintage coin, Not as a direct stuff up by a mint employee.
I am in NO way bagging this coin but to me it is simply a rarity because of a mint employee stuff up and has nothing to do with a regular coin mintage.
Great to hear some debate about my post saying it's only worth $5 :)
Emotions aside not a bad pickup/find

I am wondering if there was only one press operator at that particular show, and someone from the RAM reads this topic, that press op may not have a job any more.
I am also wondering if we
ALL should be a bit more cautious in advertising on an open forum of some of the errors found so soon after a major event like the Ekka Show.
(Just my opinion only).
I think its open long hours for several days, surely more than one operator?
Seems rather harsh to be let go for only one mistake if that is the case. Does the RAM or any other Australian agency have any legal grounds to confiscate the coin should it be offered for sale or displayed publicly?-John
There was definitely more than 1 operator on the 3 days we went we saw 4 different people operating it & i'd suggest that there would have been more than we saw.
I had'nt really thought about a value so when the figure of 6K was thrown into the discussion my Mrs nearly fainted LOL,6K really ?
Thats about 1/4 of a brand new decent car these days & i need one LOL.
Not sure Triplewitch. I know all my error coins that are currently on display at the RAM are under contract and in that contract there is a clause which prevents the RAM from claiming these error coins.
I would presume that if an error coin got out into the public arena, then the TRAM would waive it's claim to retrieve that coin.

I am only suggesting that could be the figure value of this one coin.
I just used that figure as an ex forum member who was selling the "non" mint marked coins was asking $6,000 and that was for a coin that had three brothers, (that is four in total).
Only one way to find out..........what the coin is really worth.
Coin of the year, its fabulous.
:i_agree: So unusual.
Getting back to what troutski said about the 1930 penny. I would say the 1930 is on my wantlist but this one is way out of my leauge.
The 2013 Ekka opened on August 8 and continued until August 17.
Too early to suggest one person has a unique error worth potentially $6k
Quote from: 'runway' pid='27039' dateline='1378385519'Too early to suggest one person has a unique error worth potentially $6k
Oh really?
First up, the $6k wasn't for a unique error. It was one of a small group.
Secondly, given previous events and the way the press works, total mintage for the show is almost certainly under 10,000.
Thirdly, they do watch the process like hawks, and are pretty careful about not letting stuffups escape.
It may not be unique, but its not far off it.
r9453, I have gone through your list with my $1 collection and have found that I still need this list of coins to complete my set.

I have lots of mobile press coins and the MM is "Incused".
The privy and MM are not.
I am hoping that the list means "Mobile press" coins because I have NO intention of adding errors or variety's to this collection ( It's hard enough as it is to get all these coins in MS63 or better) and the mobile press coins are always available eventually.
I only started to "Get serious" with the $1 25mm coins a couple of years ago and it has been a learning curve all the way, there is ALWAYS some coin that you discover and that is what makes these coins so bloody interesting and challenging :yahoo:
Still waiting for Goldies input  :)

Cut and paste it to "Word" and print it from there , It worked for me :ok:
About time mobile press coins are taken seriously the early dates hard to find and identify hey Fulvio have you got a list of these for members to look out for?
Quote from: 'trout' pid='27216' dateline='1378473270'Cut and paste it to "Word" and print it from there , It worked for me :ok:
Rather than Word, use a text editor. For PC users, you already have Notepad. Mac users have TextEdit, though there are much better alternatives for both systems.
Why not Word? Because its a word processor, which produces incredibly bloated files containing way too much info, as many have found to their consternation and embarrassment. Try this: Write the word "Hello" in both a text editor and a Word document, and save it. Compare the file sizes, then open the word doc with a text editor and have a look at what it contains. You will be horrified.

They've always been taken seriously, with values generally 3-5 times the mass-produced ones.
No, I don't. Mainly because I sort of lost interest when they screwed up the whole mobile press operation a few years back. Its now a joke in my opinion, as are the prices they charge, so I no longer bother. But I have no doubt others could post a comprehensive listing.
With all due respect, most of us don't care about the file size. We just want to get the work done.-John
Well said triplewitch and IMHO some hidden agendas :)
Quote from: 'runway' pid='27222' dateline='1378474348'IMHO some hidden agendas
None at all. Simply a matter of the right tool for the job.
FWIW, I also get upset about using screwdrivers as chisels, micrometers as hammers, and people who post pictures of words instead of the actual words. :P
If you hold down the left click & run over what you want printed,it will/should all turn blue, then right click & a list comes up,select print.

Yes, portable press, I presume the so-called shallow coins (as in weakly struck?) were made at the various national venues.
I used the term shallow because its referred to here:
The Australian Coin Collecting Blog (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/09/australian-dollar-coins-2004-issues-and-mintages.html)
I'm not sure if they should be included in this particular list. Essentially, aren't they the same coin as the (much higher mintage) "RAM and Dealer Sales"?

I feel sure that if one a "complete" set/collection of $1 coins, then one must also include all the Portable press/Shallow coins as well as the all the baby set $1 coins. Remember that the baby set coins do have date changes.
QuoteRemember that the baby set coins do have date changes.
That's all the change on them tho, Lazy Beggars could have designed a new coin for each set instead of just rehashing an old design and changing the date :dash1:
OK I agree but they do that to all the coins, regardless of the denomination from time eternity. So what's the difference on the baby set coins to that of the normal circulation coins?

To be quite honest they are both Crappy designs and the baby sets cost quite a bit.
You would think for the money they are asking for these RAM would put a bit of effort into them :dodgy:
I do agree with the counter stamp coins because they are more of a commemoration of an event (ANDA Show).
You are correct tho, If I am to have a "Complete" set everything must be included :ok:
Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='27274' dateline='1378517817'a "complete" set/collection of $1 coins, then one must also include all the Portable press/Shallow coins
Only if they are actually different, for instance the 2011 Ram's Head which comes in the 4 coin cards (Privy marks, square) and the 1 coin card (Counterstamp, circle).
If the Portable press/Shallow coins are all counterstamps where some are deep and some are shallow then I wouldn't count them as different.

Are you saying that the portable press coins have the SAME mintmarks but are struck weakly ?

I have 5 x 2004 Eureka coins which I bought from a dealer. They have counterstamps, even the 'C' is a c/stamp. I presume these are the ones referred to on australian-threepence.com/blog (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/09/australian-dollar-coins-2004-issues-and-mintages.html) as "RAM and Dealer Sales" and by deduction they are not shallow whereas the portable press are. But they are all counterstamps.
Edit: Note I'm not trying to say you can't tell them apart.

There seem to be some misconceptions. Strange, because this has been discussed many times before and you lot should know this stuff.
There are two distinctly different coins produced for the mintmarks.
One has one of the mintmarks on the die, and is struck just like any other coin. This is the one you buy from the mint, with mintages up towards 100k-ish.
The other has no mintmark at all. These are produced in MUCH smaller quantities, perhaps 15k total. They are then restruck with whichever mintmark for wherever they're being produced. This is the one where you get to pay your money and push the button on the small press.
Again, they are
two different coins. One is not an error of the other.
The confusion arises because while they used to have a raised MM on the heavy press, and an incused MM on the light overstamp, they changed the design to make the heavies look like the overstamps. That makes them harder to identify, and was probably done quite deliberately for that end.
But all the heavies are going to look identical, with the mark as well-stamped as the rest of the coin. The MYO's however will show some variation, in the alignment and depth of the strike, depending on how good the operator is. Personally, I wouldn't consider minor variations to be errors, though clearly that 90ยฐ is, as are the missing mintmarks.
So yes Trout, you need both types.

Some of these Portable Press strikes have lower mintages
than the 2000 Mule.
Some, like the 2007 Bridge "B" was struck at the ANDA show

Fulvio, while you're busy looking into Trout's list, just a quick query. Back a few weeks you mentioned looking for rotated Year of the Outback $1s.
Did you ever find one?
QuoteLooks like you've got a job ahead of you Trout, good luck !
You have to love a challenge, It makes Victory taste SOOO much sweeter :yahoo:
BTW I truly hope you do well with that 90 degree rotated mintmark, It couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.
I'm still trying to get my head around the difference between the MYOs and the 'heavies' as Fulvio referred to them. Here's my 2004 Eureka 'M' (sorry just could not capture a decent image so scanned it instead):
Originally, I thought this was a counterstamp, I think Fulvio called it an overstamp, which would be the same thing?
Now, I assume this is not a MYO since I only paid $3.25 for it at a dealer. Therefor its not a c/stamp but was made at the RAM from a specially prepared die and in fact its a mintmark?
Has anyone got a side by side picture of an MYO and its heavy brother?
I have found that the more you get "into" these coins the more you have to learn.
That is a GOOD thing IMHO. It makes the experience far more interesting :yahoo:
QuoteIt makes the experience far more interesting
:i_agree:
I think a lot of my misconception was based on this:
I assumed this applied in regard to the MYOs and the heavy dudes. But in fact it only applies from more recently, say 2008? Before that its a different story?
Edit: This was the only 2005 Gallipoli MYO at Ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2005-Australian-Gallipoli-Uncirculated-1-Coin-Mobile-Press-S-/360716770240?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item53fc651bc0) I was hoping the difference would be obvious. :dash1:
I think it's after 2008 Coat of Arms.
The "Last" NCLT Dollar in my collection
is Brisbane Coin Fair Portable Press "B"
mintage as noted (2009) 974.
The "G" Gallipoli is easier to identify.(and scarcer)
The portable press type has a Much thicker Font
for the "G"
This might help. (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2011/01/identifying-one-dollar-mintmarks-privy-marks-and-counterstamps.html)
Prior to 2008 the mark was the same, it was called a mintmark and it was either heavy from a production press or shallow from a mobile press or even earlier to confuse you more a portable version of a production press (maybe someone can confirm this) at Royal shows. CEO Janine Murphy wanted to make changes so she introduced the mintmark, counterstamps and privymarks and their definitions. Sadly she passed away and it was carried on but now we've seen mobile press counterstamp coins struck in Canberra and not at the actual location of the counterstamp which I feel violates how she wanted it to work.
Back to the earlier mintmarks it's only the depth of the mark or heavy/weaker strike of the mark that helps you determine which one it is.
Yep thanks pph, I had seen that analysis before. Very interesting.
In regard to the heavy/shallow strikes, I take it the marks are aligned the same? By that I mean the same angular rotation and radial distance from the centre. It seems to me that the RAM intended for these coins to appear the same not different. :-/
I think mobile press coins need their own topic the earlier ones are intruiging I cannot pick the difference between some and location press was at I would love to hear more from you guys
You can find the locations here: australian-threepence.com/blog (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/11/the-complete-guide-to-australian-one-dollar-coins.html)

Nup. At least nothing far enough out to detect without Goldie's
Rote-a-scopeโข.
The easiest way to differentiate
any MYO from the heavy ones is to look for deformation of the coin at the mintmark. Since the mark is part of the die on the heavies, it looks like any other part of the coin. But since the coin is struck with a couple of tons of pressure at a very small spot by the portable press, the coin does deform slightly. Its really obvious when you have both side by side.
As for nomenclature, well, its just semantics. I think of them all as mintmarks, even though the coins are not actually struck at different mints, as mintmarks used to identify. So counterstamp, privy or whatever, its all the same thing now anyway.
The relevant part of this is whether the coin is struck once at the mint, with whatever mark they put on it, or twice, with the second being the particular mark they're using.
I can see another catalogue project in this, being actual pics of all the marks. I'd volunteer to do it, but I don't have anywhere near a complete set.
Quote from: 'r9453' pid='27380' dateline='1378554210'In regard to the heavy/shallow strikes, I take it the marks are aligned the same?
That's the intent. There is a big screen over the press, with the image from the inbuilt camera and alignment guides. So the operator just rotates the coin to the right alignment and presto.
But being a manual operation, rotations do vary slightly. Not 90ยฐ usually, but enough to be measurable if you're so inclined. Say as much as upsets which are in-tolerance.
As for radial distance, that's fixed and doesn't vary.
QuoteIts really obvious when you have both side by side.
:drinks:
For me, its a bit more than nomenclature is just semantics. As a beginner I have to start somewhere.
QuoteThe relevant part of this is whether the coin is struck once at the mint, with whatever mark they put on it, or twice, with the second being the particular mark they're using.
Yep, thanks for pointing that out. I've got it now.
Edit: I saw the press in operation at Sydney earlier this year. Unfortunately it never occured to me to look closely at what was happening. I can imagine how it could vary slightly.
Mobile press coins need a topic on it's own
Trout: Having gone through your big list from earlier postings, I have some answers for you:
Items 52, 56, 57: Have a variety that is the letters IRB, located under the neck of the Queen, are either Joined or Separated.
Item 56: Not only came in a 3 coin pack but there were in separate packaging as well.
Item 74: Comes in small and large effigy.
Item 83: "M" Counterstamp coin has a viariety - AU.ST (The full stop is the variety).
item 111: Came in two issues, you need the "C" Shallow/Portable Press issue.
Item 126: I would like to see a scan of this Rock Wallaby/Koala Corprate Pack.
Item 155: Australian Coinage Pack has an overprint Cover version from the Brisbane Coin Show that is a private overprint. No difference in coins.
Item 166: This was issued on a card, same size as the coloured $1 animal coins.
Following coins not listed: "B" Shallow Strike/Counterstamp Holey Dollar, 60th Anniv Korean War End.
2009 Kangaroo coin came in the following configurations: 1. Ordinary $1 Kangaroo. 2. Master Mint Mark. 3. Master Mint mark with "C" Counterstamp.
Your list contains only one coloured $1 coin and that is the one for Black caviar. Is this the only coloured $1 coin you hold or do you have all the rest?
Now, if you wish to complete your $1 collection, I believe one needs to secure the Shallow/Counterstamp issues as well. You have all the normal circulating and NCLT coins listed, you also list the Privy Marked coins, that is those in the square, so one really needs the shallow/counterstamp coins as well.
It's your collection and your funds. Have fun.
QuoteIs this the only coloured $1 coin you hold or do you have all the rest?
yes I have all the rest, They are in an album with the Silver proofs.
As these always come out in a series of 6 coins they are easier to maintain if kept separate from the other NCLT issues.
I am not really into collecting Variety's or errors and the shallow stamped coins I am "Still out to lunch" on :ok:
I will get an example of the "shallow" coins and decide for myself if the difference between the 2 types is enough to warrant the effort and expense of acquiring them.
QuoteItem 126: I would like to see a scan of this Rock Wallaby/Koala Corprate Pack.
This one I have absolutely no idea about But I am assuming that the coins are identical to the normal pad printed 2008 coins so there (for Me) is no reason to get them (Different packaging of the same coin equates to "Diddly Squat" to Me)
One way to identify the shallow coins from the heavy press coins is the location of the Reeding on the edge of coin in relation to the "A" of Australia.
The other way is to examine the edge of the recess that the letter is contained in. The heavy press coins have a very sharp edge whereas the shallow printed coins have a slightly rounded wedge.

From them pic's the mintmark isn't a different design just weaker on the portable press issue, Which in my eyes makes it a Variety and NOT a different mintmark.
Thanks for the info Goldie, these are now OFF my agenda :dance2:
Nice contribution Trout :)
Scans don't do them justice. Too flat.
You really need them in hand to compare side by side.
They really are different coins, even if they may look like the heavy press versions.

With respect fulvio and to pp that doesn't convince me. The shallows are a variety. It was not the intent of the RAM to produce different coins. Dozen matter anyway, I'm not gonna include them in my collection. :yahoo:

Attacked?
That's not being attacked. Those of us who survived previous incarnations saw REAL attacks, and they look nothing like that, trust me. Not that you'll ever see it here, of course. None of us want to revisit those times, which is why the friendly banter is such a big part of who we are here.
As Trout said, this is not just a database.
Hope so Fulvio we will see...

I think I'm very close. Mine are only Al/Br
I don't include any silver coins in this collection, nor do I include errors or varieties.
But I do include one from each of the press's in Canberra, one of each of all the privy, mintmark & counterstamps along with their heavy press cousins, plus Pudding, Blinky & Dot sets .
My thinking RE these three sets they were the same just different dates, so, just one would do,, WRONG!! gotta have em all.
May as well just have one of the MOR's if that was the case.
I thought that if I was to include Silver coins I would then have to include Gold coins, because,,,
I asked myself this question.
To have a complete set of 25mm Dollar coins, would one not have to include all the GOLD dollar coins as well??

Why not add the Pnc oversize coins as well?
All valid questions, However a coin set is a personal thing and every collector will decide for themselves as to what is appropriate and valid for their own collections.
When I finally get the last 3 coins I need I will wash off the Cam Cream and unlace the body armour because the main Battle will be over :ok:
That doesn't mean that if I come across a coin that is a little bit different and I don't have it I will ignore it, NO way I will be grabbing that puppy :)
All I am saying that you have to draw a line in the sand at some stage because otherwise the task becomes far too expensive and daunting to complete.
Once you have the set that you decided on complete, There is nothing wrong with relaxing a little and making the set a little more complete from time to time :wavemulticolor:
As for adding the Gold coins to the mix, Well I and many other collectors simply don't have that type of money to spend.
the only Gold coins I want to buy are the Australian Mint Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns along with the Gold Proclamation coins.
Now these to me ARE worthy of the dollar sacrifice because of the history associated with these coins.
Lets face it the $1 coins in your pocket change are "Goldies" anyway :)
To clarify me earlier response re 25 mm coins.
To the best of my knowledge I have a near complete set of 25 mm Alum-Br $1 coins both in folders and removed from folders for my UNC collection held in DANSCO Supreme Albums.
I also have a complete set of 25 mm Silver proof Commemorative coins.
In regards to varieties and errors of the Alum-Br coins, I keep what I noodle and that's it.
Gold coins are a no no, to darn expensive.
I will go to the end of the world to secure non normal packaged $1 Alum-Br coins. For example, it took me almost eight years to secure the HMAS Sydney 11 Overprinted folder that I now hold two, and a couple of years to secure the Eureka "E" Overprinted Folder. I am still on the chase for the AFL Premiership coin that PPH has an example of that the AFL will not respond to me emails re this specially wrapped coin.
robbiegal get over it move on ok that'd be choice
Goldy I know you have the HMAS and Eureka folders that is awesome
Whats the AFL Special wrapped coin?
Wasn't there some special folder for the Suffrage coin?
That is correct each collector has to draw a line in the sand say that is it,if not as stated by others not just too expensive impossible.
You would have to include the no mint mark coins, with only a few examples if not impossible darn too expensive
Quote from: 'jozk123' pid='28821' dateline='1379641259'if not impossible darn too expensive

*************MANY POSTS DELETED*****************
I have deleted several posts out of this thread. Apologies to the innocent whose posts I deleted too. I'm disappointed that the simple posting of a coin by a member who hasn't posted in a long time provoked such a frankly, poor reaction. We are supposed to be a welcoming community and what went on in here was anything but. This is even more confusing to me considering that just a few days ago many of you were so keen to fall over yourselves trying to be nice and send coins to a new member who you didn't know from Adam in contravention to the forum rules.
So. Firstly, remember, be nice. If you can't be nice then be quiet. Secondly, if you have an opinion that isn't about the topic in the thread at hand and you feel the need to state it take it to a new thread and refrain from ruining the original one.

Now, this is a really good way to store your dollar set.
Note 1) coins are slabbed by reputable TPG company to a) protect the coin from environmental factors such as air, pvc etc b) improve salability of coin in unlikely event I sell it and c)so I can register the coin in my online sets
2) coins look good in a coin page
(http://www.thesandpit.net/dollars/page1.JPG)
Here's a piccie of the Howard Florey dollar.
mmm hasn't come out well. I'll do another
While I'm warming up the scanner perhaps you'd like to learn more about Howard Florey. You could start on the wiki entry here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Florey
OK here's another attempt
(http://www.thesandpit.net/dollars/x1b.JPG)
Not too sure if we can get a good look at Lord Florey in this scan.
Part of the problem is that like many of the NCLT dollars, the finish is semiprooflike, so we have flat mirror like surfaces that just do not scan or photograph as well as those that are more uneven and exhibit cartwheel lustre.
Note too the attractive toning on the coin.
Aluminium bronze coins when toned are often unattractive as when they start to tone they quickly lose their lustre (and thus don't grade high; remember that of course lustre accounts for 20% of a coin's grade as does eye appeal), but this one has mainitained its underlying lustre. The Florey dollars if well looked after will generally come in MS65 or better; this one is well above average which is why I've kept it in my personal collection.
The next dollar in the collection is a 1999 Year of the Older person
(http://www.thesandpit.net/dollars/x2.JPG)
The coin looks to have come from a mint set.
It has very little in the way of bagmarks. The only real problem is the small stain near the rim at 9 o'clock on the reverse otherwise it would have graded the same as the Florey.
Next coin is a 2001 Centenary Of Federation dollar. these were available as circulation coins, mint set coins and coins were prepackaged in the state series folders.
Federation dollars are always worth checking for upsets.
You won't find upsets in the RAM products but you can occasionally find them in rolls or if you are lucky in dealer's stock.
A large proportion were apparently released in Melbourne.
Here we have one of my favourites - the 2001 Navy dollar. Most of those that were left in their original folders have toned in an ugly way. This is one of the few that are still nice:
The 2002 outback dollar (this also comes as a mintmark dollar). This one I removed from a wedding set.

my scanner needs a clean
2005 "Dancing Man" dollar. It came in mint sets, circulation coins, wedding sets.
This one is a wedding set coin
(http://www.thesandpit.net/dollars/x8.JPG)
The mob of roos also circulated in 2005. The quality of the coins is very high for a circulation issue. I have pulled MS67s out of security company rolls.
Next we have what I consider one of the more attractive NCLT designs, the 2007 international polar year dollar.
The circulating 2007 dollar coin was the issued to commemorate the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) held in Australia that year. This coin was only released as a business strike with no special high grade packaged issue such as mint sets. As such, the coin is hard to find in high grade. This was the best I could find in the two RAM rolls I opened.
The next coin while it has an attarctive design, is one of the toughest to get in really high grade even though it appeared in mint sets (and only in mint sets).
Note the ugly speckled appearance. To a lesser or greater (usually greater) extent all of the 2009 astronomy dollars have this appearance. I have heard that the astronomy dollars were struck many months before they were packaged. In that time they were poorly stored.
The 2009 Australia Post dollar is another coin with an attractive simple design. I bought ten from the post office when they were released. I should have looked at them closer before I brought them home as all the coins were quite bagmarked on the obverse. It appears that I got a bad batch as this issue can be found much better than the one in my collection:
The 2010 Burke & Wills dollar came in mint set style packaging. With semi prooflike reflective fields they are attractive. Unofrtunately they frequently have a mottled look similar to the 2009 astronomy.
In 2011 in a desperate and successful attempt to get me to spend more money, the RAM released the Australian Wool $1 as part of the two coin set.
The overall appearance of the coin is attractive - nice bloom, flat fields and not speckled. Unfortunately they can be a bit baggy. It's well worth looking through a large quantity of these to find the less bagmarked ones.
It's been a while since we had one, so here's a full page:
Looks good doesn't it?
These pages fit into a standard binder. If you get them in bulk, the pages cost two or three dollars each.
Next we come to the coin I consider the key date of the one dollar commemorative series due to its condition rarity.
Due to the modern high speed presses the circulation coins take a battering before they are bagged up and sent to the security companies.
The 2011 CHOGM dollar:
All the examples I've examined are heavily bagmarked and this is the best one I've been able to find. Its saving grace is its attractive fresh mint bloom.
(This issue may be one for the speculator; buy as many rolls as you can [the RAM ones are generally better quality], crack them open and cherry pick the coins. An MS65 would be a coin worth preserving).
Next we come to one with a simple design that looks attractive in aluminium bronze - the 2012 Wheat dollar. These come in the two coin set and are generally high quality. This one was cherry picked by looking through rougly a hundred sets:
Yet another coin-in-a-card was released to celebrate the international year of co-operatives. The general quality was average to good but with enough searching exceptional examples could be found:
The 2012 Men's Trophy while having a semiprooflike appearance, on closeup has a "milky" look which keeps its grade down.
Looks like some of you have been having fun while I was asleep. This thread is locked until I can sort out the mess. I'll put emu666's images back here shortly. :(
sorry
What 1964 penny pics? I thought all the 1964 penny pics now had their own home (http://http://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=1678).
The 2012 Tennis Women's trophy was released at the same time as the men's trophy. It is similar in appearance (often with that "milky" look).
I like the commentary, but would MUCH rather see the coin pics trimmed to JUST the coin. We all know what a slab looks like by now, and the current pics are a waste of bandwidth.
Here we have a special from the Baby Set (yet another coin to collect)
The 2012 Dot And The Kangaroo dollar. I'd have to say the design doesn't particularly excite me but the coin is tough in high grade. Most of the coins I observed in the sets were heavily bagmarked.
Yet another release from the RAM early in 2012 was the Year Of The Farmer coin.
The stock I examined was of relatively poor quality - this was the best I could find
(http://www.thesandpit.net/dollars/x21.JPG)
The problem with this coin (and all examples I'd examined when making my original purchase) is that milky look. This is readily apparent on the obevrse:
The coin has no bagging, good bloom, good strike but relatively poor eye appeal. As the eye appeal accounts for 20% of the grade, this explains why the coin only came in as an MS65.
Here's a set up for sale
http://www.drakesterling.com.au/coins-for-sale/products/1984-2000-one-dollar-date-set
I like the Yr of the Farmer coin.
Yes it is a nice design.
The mintmark (privy mark counterstamp etc) coin for 2012 used the threepence design.
An attractive little coin.
This one is a B counterstamp from the Brisbane ANDA show. The obverse is a little baggy but the bloom is nice and it has none of that milky look that the last few coins have.

The coin I have is a little baggy but fuilly brilliant (this helps a lot; after all lustre accounts for 20% of the coin's grade). I have no idea how easy it is to find them this nice in a raw state as I haven't seen any others. Actually it was Purple Girl who got the coin for me. Thank you Kathryn.

Very nice emu666 I like them :)
Great list of 25mm $1 coins :)
A quote from Robbiegal that I have taken completely out of context (relates to a 1964 penny of course).
"look beautiful in the holder - the holder is like David Jones Christmas window dressings - really makes them look very dressed up indeed".
I have a silver mor $1 I had slabbed....well....just because i can. I'll dig it out later.
That is a lovely coin Robbie.
The 2012 coin in the Royal Australian Mint's series of Notable Australians featured the Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson.
The prooflike finish of this coin makes it difficult to scan or photograph. It also means that bagmarks stand out much more than on a "normal" circulation coin.
I looked through somewhere between 50 and 100 coins to find one this good:
Late in 2012, the RAM issued two coins, one in a card and one and one in a pnc, to commemorate the AFL season and the premiers. (I believe they will be doing the same this year).
This is the one issued in the card.

The mob of roos is nice on business strikes but even better in proof.
This is the 2012 AFL dollar that was issued in the PNC. Production quality was excellent and the coin be readily found in extremely high grade.
Piccies of the coin in the pnc can be found at http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2013/03/sydney-swans-afl-premiers-2012-dollar-pnc.html.
The dollar in the 2013 two coin pack featured the Discovery Of Gold. A spectacular design and one of my favourites. While most of the examples of this issue would make MS66, I had to look through maybe 50 to 100 coins to find a couple that made MS67.
The 2013 Baby Sets once again featured the 'Dot and the kangaroo' dollar.
The production quality was poor. While the reflective surface are attractive, the dies appeared rusted and the coins in the sets bagmarked.
It took a lot of hunting to find one this good. I hope next year's sets are better.
The "mintmark" dollar for 2013 commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Holey Dollar and Dump.
I consider this to be a particularly attractive design. Note how the denomination has moved to the obverse.
This was what I considered the best of the counterstamp coins I obtained from the Perth ANDA Coin Fair. Currently it is the lowest graded because PCGS considered the two coins that Eric sent them to be a grade better.
Never mind, I'm still happy with my coin.
Until this year I had been ignoring the various Year Of .... coins but I couldn't resist this one. The coin is prooflike due to the flat fields and the design of the snake gives a natural cameo effect. The obverse design is the same as the Holey Dollar above. Mine was graded as MS68; diligent searching should match or even better this.
For the horseracing enthusiasts the RAM released two coins (one in a card, the other in a pnc) to celebrate the career of Black Caviar. Note the matt fields and polished highpoints appearance of the coloured coin. I find it striking and appealing.
The overall production quality of both coins was quite high and they are relatively easy to find in very high grade.
2013 saw the 200th anniversary of the Benevolent Society and in excitement the RAM issued a commemorative dollar coin. These were only available on cards and in theory should be easy to find in very high grade. However, most of the coins I looked at had many small bagmarks on the obverse. The coin I finally selected was virtually devoid of bagmarks but somehow I missed the hairline scratch through Her Majesty's chin. (Tip: Hairlines will not be visible at all angles. When examining a coin it is best to rotate the coin through 360 degrees so as to pick up all defects).

Great posts emu666 your knowledge and research is impeccable :)
Thank you. I'm glad you like them.
The person the RAM chose as the 2013 "Notable Australian" was Slim Dusty, a legend for those who like "both kinds of music".
The coins I examined had similar bagmark problems to the Benevolent Society dollars. No scratches on this one, although it has been struck through a tiny piece of some foreign material near the rim at 12 o'clock on the reverse.

can you tell where do you get those pages emu66?
I had a couple gifted to me & don't know where to buy them
they are very tidy and straight
I have more of the plastic type pages and the holders don't sit as flat and neat
They're Lighthouse pages from Renniks. If my memory serves me correct they're product code is "encap slab" (what a weird thing to remember). A few years ago Ian Pitt was only keeping limited stock but hopefully with the increasing interest in slabbed coins he's keeping more stock on hand. Edlins should be able to get them in for you Robbie.

I have tried ordering through Edlins as I am a loyal customer, but after waiting over a year for eagle mounts, we went straight to the USA seller and had delivery with in a fortnight

I was looking for something this morning and found my two boxes of decimal 'stuff' and thought it time to pop PNC's, MYO etc. into my two packets of PNC pages
well, filled the 10 pages in a flash and still have two almost completely full boxes of my decimal 'junk' as I affectionately call it
I must confess that I am always saying how I don't collect decimals - not true!! I have oodles of the blighters!
by the end of next week, all of my MYO coins and other things from many years will be neatly holdered .... I hope
postage was a flat rate of $7.95
and the items were cheaper than where I source the locally - even with coin club member discount!
much appreciated xx
I finally found my missing page of commemorative dollars:

The 1988 dollar was the second commemorative dollar released.
I find the aboriginal art representation of a kangaroo appealing.
This coin was released into circulation and also appeared in the 1988 mint set. Exceptional high grade examples can be found from the mint sets (but as usual you have to look through quite a few sets).
The next commemorative dollar coin was issued in mint sets and various forms of packaging (but not into circulation) in 1992.
The Barcelona dollar can be found in high grade - it is worthwhile checking a few mint sets to find a coin with strong mint bloom and minimal bagmarks.
Mine is an MS67; I obtained it from a fellow collector who had just upgraded to an MS68.
1993 saw the release of the first mintmark dollars and, near the end of the year, the release of the first business strikes in five years.
The best examples of the 1993 Landcare dollar ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landcare_Australia) can be found in the mint sets although occasionally a well preserved mint mark dollar can be found.
The 1994 mintmark dollar commemorates the tenth anniversary of the dollar coin.
These were released in plastic wallets so now of course the coins are covered in pvc residue.
We had a batch of original wallets. After carefully removing the pvc we submitted the best 20 to PCGS.
This one was the best and I just had to keep it for myself:
The 1995 Waltzing Matilda dollar is often heavily toned if found in its original folder of issue. Finding these in extremely high grade is a real challenge.
emu666 that is the best example of the decade dollar I have seen
Like the 1993 dollar, the 1996 Parkes dollar was issued as a circulating coin, mint set coin and mintmark dollar.
Really high grade ones are easiest to find as mintmark dollars but you can also get spectacular examples from mint sets.
The 1997 "plane" Kingsford Smith dollar was released as a normal circulation strike and in mint sets. Most of the really high grade specimens will come from mint sets (but watch for milky toning on the coin as that severely lowers its grade) although I recently was able to look through an original mint bag and plucked out quite a few good enough for sets (MS65 and better).
I received the last of the coins I needed to complete my set today.
The 2009 Steve Irwin coin, What a great Australian to finish the set :yahoo:

You must have spent a heap of time effort and quids hunting down and getting those exquisite dollar coins slabbed.
Then you have made the effort to photograph them (rather well) and post the pic's for all the members to enjoy.
Well done.
I take my hat off to you and I thank you for sharing :good:
Thanks trout.
I used to have one of each mintmark, but it was too expensive to get each of them in a PCGS slab.
I just used a scanner. A well set up camera system such as Mark and Kathryn's will do a better job as it shows up the lustre better.
This one is currently in an Eagle mount (it has also toned a little since the scan was taken):

To get every mintmark and coin in the dollar set slabbed would require putting on a balaclava and robbing a bank, 300 odd coins at $30 odd each is simply way out of 99% of collectors reach.
Quite frankly just getting every Dollar coin available costs a few grand without the slabbing fees :dash1:
I like to simply put my coins in 2x2's and you like them in slabs, All is GOOD.
We all collect in different ways and for different reasons and that is what makes this hobby so diverse and enjoyable .
The ONE thing we all share is "Passion", I hope none of us loose that because that is what makes us numismatics :good:

I have had an uneducated sqizz at the pricings and at even the economy rates plus postage both ways to the states and the $30 per coin is pretty optimistic, In reality it would probably be more.
As far as paying a fee to a US company for valuations of Aussie coins go , A subscription to "The Blue book" would be far more accurate and more value.
Anyway there is NO way I am breaking sets up just to get them in slabs at 10-20 at a time .
At about 3 moths a shot I would be dead and buried before I completed that task.
the classic $1 coin is the MOR's
This is a part of the RAM part of the display at the Floriade in Canberra at the moment
They have large silhouettes of the MOR's kangaroos to the rear of the each floral display in their section - I liked it (and the roasted nuts, ice cream and fairy floss - felt a bit ill when I got home!)

Quote from: 'runway' pid='29746' dateline='1380719604'The Irwin coin was a sleeper and now worth more than issue price
But it's got to be one of the ugliest dollars going.
IMO
I agree interest it reminds me of the ugly Queen Mum coin
Agree, the Irwin coin isn't a nice coin - doesn't really look like him at all.... Don't understand why this would be the last one to get as I got this one the day after it was released. To each their own, I suppose. :)
Anyway... I'm also in the throes of collecting every single $1 coin out there too. I do have a question or two though. Aren't coins worth more with the original packaging or doesn't it matter? I don't think I will understand the need to break up sets (but am digressing...)
I've kept all my MYO's with the cardboard folders and use note plastic sleeves to store them flat (3 to a page). The ones without those folders, I use the self adhesive foldable coin holders and staple all four sides so the coin doesn't move inside. It takes up a few folders but displays better. Is this a good way to store them or should I look at encapsulating them?
Does this mean I have to start collecting proofs too? Glad there wasn't a proof of the VC coin. lol
It is entirely up to you TG and by the way :welcome: to the forum :yahoo:
Personally I rip them out of the mint packaging and put them in my albums.
lots of people keep them in the original mint packaging and others like Feathers get theirs slabbed and collect them that way.
It really isn't important as long as the coin is safe and you are happy with your collection all is good.
Quote from: 'trout' pid='38331' dateline='1388232081'It really isn't important as long as the coin is safe and you are happy with your collection all is good.
I'd qualify that statement slightly.
It really isn't important if all you care about is your personal enjoyment.
But to many, preserving value or at least not devaluing them is important. In which case keep them as original as possible while removing hazards, such as PVC packaging for example.
There has been much discussion here about packaging, and the merits of various approaches. A great start would be to find and read those, and also to research the long-term suitability of various materials for archival purposes. There are entire websites dedicated to archival and preservation, especially of documents, which are also relevant to coins and banknotes.
And definitely learn what materials go into various branded products. There are popular products out there which will definitely destroy your collection over the long term.
as there are 328 different coins in my 25mm dollar collection alone the practicality of having every coin in its original packaging and boxes is a pain in the butt.
2x2's, saflips or slabs are a far more practical way of storage as long as you use archival quality products to store them in.
Imagine the amount of storage space you would need if you kept everything in the Mint "Tinsel" and there is always the danger of the PVC that the mint still insists on using damaging the coins.
Agreed that coins still in their Mint Tinsel do get a small premium over raw coins in flips but it is not the way I like to have my coins.
I like to have them in album pages so that I can view them without going through boxes and boxes of stuff to find them :ok:
Slabbed coins can also be stored in albums as well but take up far more space, The upside is that if you pick the right coin to get slabbed it will most probably be far more valuable in the long run than the same coin still in its packet, box or whatever else they come in :)
Welcome Tigergirl. I to have a complete $1 Alum Br 25 mm collection. I buy two of each of these coins. I keep one of the coins in the folders as issued and the other is removed and placed into DANSCO Supreme Albums. When it comes to the Mint Marked coins I get both the Heavy Press and Portable Press coins and label them separately.
If we are talking solely the Alum Br 25 mm coins, then there are 241 Alum Br Coins in my collection. They are both in original or DANSCO albums.
In regards to the silver proofs of the 25mm coins, I have 33 coins, all in original packaging.
I wish you well in your quest in trying secure a COMPLETE $1 Alum Br collection, in original folders, as I feel sure there are two that you will not be able to find.
And what two are they Goldseeker? Be most interested as I like a challenge... ;D

It depends if Tigergirl is collecting coins or packaging...........
either... not fussy, especially if it's rare/scarce. :)
The coins are in specially marked folders and referred to as the HMAS Sydney 11 and The Eureka VIP Foldered coins. Both folders have a special overprint on them and less that 50 of the HMAS Sydney 11 folders exist(?) and I have been told only 37 of the Eureka folders exist. Both of these numbers have been challenged by me with the RAM in Canberra and I am still awaiting a response.
Oh those ones. Well, never say never, but I certainly won't be holding my breath... Thanks for the info. :)
2003 $1 Womans SUFFRAGE $1 Special folder ... there's some history to suggest these were handed out at launch.
Does anyone recall these?
Yes and No, Runway. A member on this forum received/secured the complete package of the handout. Was like a Show Bag with pamphlets etc that dealt with women's issues. The coin itself was in a plastic module in the standard RAM flip top Box, black, and was in the package handed out. No specially worded packaging though.
I have secured one of the coins in the capsule and RAM Box but it looks ordinary.
I believe that member I am referring too has not posted for a while.
i have collected eleven 2014 25mm coins so far this year and it is still only January.

There are actually 12 coins
Year of the Horse ali bronze and silver Proof.
Tarra Australis 4 coin set, silver proof and "C" press coin.
Mint and Proof set coins
And the two pad printed coins
Makes a total of 12 coins so far this year :)
Proof coins threw me out. No problems Trout.
Wedding set?
Crikey not even 2 months into the year and a total of 15 alibronze 25mm coins issued so far.
Looks like it will be a bumper crop in the 25mm dollars this year :)
Edit
14 alibronze + 1 cupro nickel

and that's the ways it done! classy coin collecting
Just a heads up for the $1 fanatics.
The ali/bronze MOR 2014 proof is available from Downies ($50 with postage) so there is no need to buy the wedding set for this coin.
Saved about $100 taking this option :good:

Sure... IF they get delivered to a bank, or turn up in change. :P
Fat chance of that!
My 2014 mor proof coin arrived from Downies today :good:
These other 2 Silver coins are 25mm so fit the criteria for my dollar collection.
Bloody ridicules prices tho , $75 and $99 for the proof one :dash1:
I got a pic of last years one, a very low mintage as they are only made to order
I'm seriously not interested in buying these over priced NCLT issues

I'll go along with that. My sentiments exactly.
Yep, seems like the motion is carried, GB is just a total ripoff and no good for the sport of collecting..yep it's now a sport due to the amout of running around I have to do :winkextra:
AC has heaps of money so I'm sure she wouldn't mind getting anyone that wants one one as she's a member of the elite legend group :good:
I have just ordered the next two of the pad printed coins for 2014.
I also ordered the 1oz 32mm MOR coin as well because I just couldn't help myself

Given that the regular 1oz roos are 40mm in diameter I wonder what's going on with the 1oz MOR dollar. Either it's not 32mm, it's not 1oz, it's a thick planchet (piedfort), or the specifications are wrong.
Check out this baby.

Yes I ordered that one as well.
Will be interesting when I send it to PCGS if they call it a Silver coin like the Proof gold plated one :)

The speccs on the RAM site put it as 32mm so I am assuming it will be peidfort like .
taken from above link :)
The detailed, earthy colours of the bounding kangaroos help to bring the $1 coin to life like never before and, in doing so, ensure that this piece of numismatic history will appeal to collectors both young and old.
Gee they nearly had me thinkin that I really needed this coin but then I looked in my wallet and seen I don't really need it :laugh2:
Still not sure about these pad prints as there's just something about them :scratch_one-s_head:

They've got something wrong in that listing. They've listed that coin as found in the 2014 mint set. But the coin in the mint set is a pad printed AlBr coin, not copper nickel at all. So it's either a unique release (which would be cool) or the whole listing it up the gurgler.
I'd lean toward the later Mark :)
I don't think it is a "Gurgler" even the packaging states its cu/nickel .
This will complement the gold plated proof perfectly :yahoo:
My 2004 silver MOR coin is a 40mm issue so I am hoping the 2014 coin is the same size.
A fat 32mm coin would be cool as well.
Got this info in an email from RAM.
And with the 23 million $1 circulating coins planned to be produced for the= Anzac Centenary, many of you may have commented on whether or not we'll se= e a standard 2014 $1 coin this year. We couldn't go through the 30th annive= rsary without it but we are adding a twist, well, an 'S' for Sydney. Early = in May, we'll be heading to Sydney with the mobile press and the $1 'mob of= roos' coins! Still confirming date and location but stay tuned for more in= formation.
:scratch_one-s_head: I think all the GB is your fault trout as the mint sees your post and then thinks "well that's a good idea" and wahla ya have a new coin or 2 or 3 or maybe more :laugh2: Don't worry PP he'll have to buy some more slip soon and come to think of it so will I mate so I'll have to do a little order soon :winkextra:
I have actually lost count of the number of 25mm $1 issued so far this year.
Anyone know how many so far?

You assumed correctly. Here's a response I just got from the RAM:
QuoteHi there, we have used a thicker blank to bring out the high relief technique we've applied. It definitely accentuates the design - if you end up getting your hands on one, let us know what you think!
Purrrrrrrrrrrfect :) :yahoo:
I suggested the high relief design for silver coins and they went with the one dollar, nice to know that the mint listens to collectors, this will be the first high relief design for decimal coins from the RAM

While I am sure they took note of what you said the thousands and thousands of high relief coins the PM has been selling for years was probably the major contributing factor to what amounts to little more than a marketing gimmick.
I like the high relief idea, can't wait to see it in hand. But this is my fave design.
I talked to main guy back at the anda show last year, I have his personal email, and he joined the forum but never logs on.
he like the idea of high relief and asked heaps of questions while I was there, I explained that collectors liked the deep detail in the design, like the pre decimal coins used to have and he said like the parliament house design, so he knew exactly what I was talking about, I would think that they are on par with the setup of PM with the pricing and mintage of the coins on offer, the only thing is PM release 10,000 in one packaging then release another lot in different packaging, at least with the RAM you know the coin will not be re minted with different packaging.
I like that they introduced the high relief with the anniversary of the $1, hopefully this is a one time thing tho, but if it goes well you just know you are going to see it on every other denomination too.

Uh try asking the people who bought he Black Caviar coin on the secondary market and then they released it in a different form. Or the people who bought the 2008 Roo at Sunset (supposedly 1000 minted) a few years back only to see another 2500 minted for a three coin set with some international coins (Icons of the Commonwealth I think it was called).
If the RAM sniff a dollar in the high relief thing they'll flog it to death.

Oh how so true, I just want nice coins at a decent price..is it too much to ask :(
Here are the scans of the holographic 2004 $1 coin.
I have bought 4 of these sets just to get this one good coin.
All the others have weird discoloration on the obverse, This one however is stunning.
The scans are taken through a saflip and the dust and marks are on the flip not the coin.
All the other coins in the set are equally as nice ๏

Not real impressed with Downies at the moment :dodgy:
You might should contact them. Downies says they only charge your card when the item is ready to ship.

They charged my CC on the 31st March and it certainly doesn't take over a month for the post to get to me.
I have sent an email enquiry and await their answer.
When I send coins to the States to get graded it only takes 6-10 days and that is halfway around the World
It doesn't take any more than five days to get to me from wherever they ship them from now.
I just got back from the bush and picked up a few coins from RAM and Downies at the post office.
That High relief 1oz MOR coin is an absolute stunner, Verry happy with this particular piece of "Grannybait" :), The proof ali bronze coin is also smackko :good:
Pretty Knackered at the moment will post pics up tomorrow :ok:
Here are some pic's of the High relief Silver MOR coin.
Awesome to be able to stand a coin on its edge to take a picture of it ๏
At 32mm it doesn't really fit into my 25mm collection BUT is IS a MOR coin so I will get it slabbed and add it to my slabbed Dollar collection along with the other "Oversized" Silver 2004 MOR coin :good:
