Title: Customs rejecting coins
Post by: gabby on September 27, 2024, 07:14:09 AM
Have been sending coins to NGC now for 6 or so years - no problems with postage or Customs

Forms filled out correctly and posted and coins returned

All of a sudden, I get a phone call from the post office with the last lot sent that Customs had rejected the parcel.   They are now saying that coins cannot be sent overseas

Anyone else had this problem

I haven't sent many lately, but was going to get some ready to send next week. I hope it's not a problem.
I don't specify coins on the declaration though.

What was the face value of them all?

Aust Post prohibits sending more than $200 of face value of currency domestically.  And interestingly enough they also prohibit sending of all coins internationally.  It is strange that they are sent a lot for grading. Maybe mark them as medallions next time?

Also see here if you haven't already: https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/prohibited-and-restricted-items-list.pdf

There are many companies making a living from sending coins overseas. Are they in receipt of special privileges?

The Government doesn't want the little guy to make a profit without paying TAX. Companies that send coins + note's overseas make money and pay TAX. Government doesn't understand that your just a collector. It's all about the TAX tax tax.....

It's not as if they were going to get much in tax from this.   The total value is only $7.30

I just use "Hobby Supplies".  If they ask for more I give them the code for coin album.
Not really a lie, as the coins are in album pages.

I'll sort something out

Imperial in Brisbane send coins to PCGS in the states to be graded. Never heard of any issues.

Dealers in Sydney that are PCGS authorized dealers include Eric at Drake Sterling (who ships to PCGS California) and Harry at Anna Numismatics (who carries with him a shipment to PCGS HK each June). Both are highly reputable and I have purchased from both. I understand that Harry also ships coins to NGC.
If you want to send coins yourself just call them Tokens as all except gold coins are token coinage so you are not being untruthful.

I recently sent 6 or 7 packages overseas for trades. Most of the were received within 7 to 8 days, which was very surprising. I had no problems at the post office.  Now I just wish a package I have coming from Estonia would arrive soon. 45 days in transit. Tracking shows no movement since the 30th October, but says the delivery window is up to the 5th December. I remain hopeful.

I sometimes see deliveries coming to me where the tracking says nothing has happened for weeks. I often wonder what is going on, especially when it says it has arrived in Australia. Swabbing for cocaine or something perhaps? Who knows.

Just adding to what Nealeffendi said about coins being tokens. My parents came to Australia from the Ukraine in 1948 after world war 2. They always kept a stash of gold and Dad would say that real money is gold and all the rest is just credit..Dad would buy worn sovereigns in the 60tees 70tees for $40.00 each..

$40 for sovereigns, I'm there.
I hardly have any. I think I was paying under $200 when I got a few.
