Title: New King Charles coins
Post by: jens coins on October 05, 2023, 02:39:19 PM
from the RAM website:
Change is coming.
This morning, Andrew Leigh and Leigh Gordon announced that the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III will grace the obverse of all new Australian coins.
The effigy was designed by Dan Thorne from The Royal Mint in the UK and was approved by His Majesty King Charles III.
This has been a complex task and required highly specialised skills spanning design, engineering, engraving and tool-making.
The Royal Australian Mint is approaching the conclusion of trials and prototyping and will shortly enter full scale manufacturing of the $1 circulating coin with the new effigy. The Mint intends on manufacturing 10 million of these $1 coins, which will commence going into the banks and into the economy close to December this year.
The Mint will progressively update the five other circulating coin denominations through 2024. The Mint will also commence application of the new effigy onto our Collectible and Investment coins early into 2024.

The effigy looks rather good.

Have there already been complaints that a British artist was used and not an Australian one? If not, let the countdown begin

Only 10 million? I think I'll try and snag a few rolls.

I like it - I thought it was the same as the Martin Jennings portrait at first.
I wonder why we needed a different design.

It's not the same as the British version? I thought the plan was to have the same effigy??
Ten million is a reasonable run but people who wouldn't normally collect will put away rolls.

It is not - the MSN article doesn't show the image of the entire proposed obverse, but the ABC article does: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-05/king-charles-coin-unveiled-royal-australian-mint-canberra/102936920

See the "DT" designer's initials? That's initials for Dan Thorne, Royal Mint designer but not the designer of the British coin obverse portrait. A look at the British coin shows a "WJ" initials for William Jennings: https://www.downies.com/gb-2022-50p-her-majesty-qeii-cuni-bu

This would mark the first time that Australia has deviated from using the same portraiture as on British coins (apart from the one-off time back in 2000 with the Gottwald portrait). I don't know why it's different; I suspect the Royal Mint was asked to submit several design options, and the Australian design committee just happened to pick a different one. There might even have been some technical or legal issues with the Jennings portrait that cause the Royal Mint to suggest a different one, but I haven't heard anything as to whether or not this Thorne portrait is going to be used on British coins in the future.

I suspect the motivation here was "time". They've certainly been copping flak for taking this long to introduce Charles III coins, given how quickly the Royal Mint got its act together, and arranging for a bunch of Australian artists to travel to Britain to do a formal portrait sitting would have added to the timeframe. Look at Canada; they're persisting in their modern tradition of using Canadian artists for the obverse coinage portrait, and they haven't finished shortlisting the artist candidates yet. Canada definitely will not have any Charles III coins out before 2024, and 2025 is starting to look ambitious for them. In that sense, "using a British artist's portrait" is better than "not having a portrait at all and still using a QEII portrait two years after she'd passed away".

How does this stuff work? Would the Royal Australian Mint be charged a licensing fee for the design?

I don't know but I assume some sort of fee irrespective of which design they use because it has to be approved by the monarch, or his public servants.

Doesn't answer the question but some interesting FAQs.

Does it really matter if the designer isn't Australian? Those who complain about that are just silly nationalists. Plus the designer is a subject of the king and part of the Commonwealth so it's not like they got the US mint staff doing the design. Don't tell them that the US mint put a D or S on some wartime coins or they will rant about that as well.

Interesting - negligible cost. I assume that's related to changing dies but who knows.

And yeah I don't think it matters if the designer isn't Australian - we had one Australian designer in the past but we could have easily had none.

Shouldn't be any shortage but haven't seen any here in Brisbane yet. Asked at my local Suncorp when they had an ArmaGard delivery and still none.

Personally I'm glad that my QE II coin collection is finally finished. Even though I started it in the year 2000 which was the year that I started collecting coins.

I don't think that any monarch coin set will ever be as extensive as hers.

Yes, I think you are safe. Not much likelihood that there will be another monarch as long serving.
Unless Louis suddenly gets the job.

It doesn't matter if Charles lives another 200 years as they will stop striking coins in the next decade. Everything will be digital with no coins or notes. Coins will join phone books, telephone cards and telegrams as nostalgia.

If you believe that Neale, are you selling your collection now whilst it still has some value?

nealeffendi I think you might be right, unfortunately. I took my lady to the pictures and had to use my card to buy the tickets and two days ago we went to the zoo and the same thing, card only. Couldn't even buy a bloody fridge magnet without using my card. I always thought that cash was king but now it's getting to be useless. Not happy Jan! :dash1:

Really the government should crack down on businesses refusing cash. It harms the perceived value of our money.
I refuse to deal with businesses that don't accept cash. We all should.

And honestly, why is the Aussie Dollar worth only 66 US cents when they are a bankrupt country?  (I know our DEBT has something to do with it but theirs is much worse.)

Until my wife told me that the UNC set ballot was on I hadn't seen anything from the RAM at all (used to get emails but that must be passe now). I'm obviously looking in all the wrong places  :dontknow: .

Just got $50 charged to my credit card by RAMint.
So I was successful with the ballot ... however with Ami rage of 100,000, you'd certainly think there is enough to go around

You have to wonder about some gullible people.  Over the last few days Ebay sellers have been putting the 2024 UNC set up for sale with some fools paying up to $170 to purchase when as was noted, the mintage is 100,000 - plenty to go around at the $40 plus postage.

Note to Jen- you started this thread and mentioned that the mint had said we had seen the last of the Queen portrait - guess what?  We now have a 2024   5,10,20,50 and $1   set of coins with the Queens portrait, 2 years after she passed - things move slowly in Oz land that's  for sure!

At least the new ballot system means I don't have to sit by the phone or keyboard for hours on end!
Cheers

I didn't even bother with the ballot because they limit you to one. I'll just ring the call centre in a few weeks and order two like I do every year along with one proof set. At least then I won't be overpaying on postage.
I'm also amazed at the idiots on eBag paying more than $60 for a $20 roll of Charles dollars.

I managed to get one of each of the "premium" one and two dollar rolls in the ballot, but not surprising since they are rolling 25,000 rolls for sale rather than 5,000 like previously.
Anyone buying their non premium rolls needs a sanity check.
