Hi Kel the last photo is the best but still slightly out of focus.Your camera
might be too close to the coin
this is todays find
i feel i have had enough ..
,, kel ,,
Hi Keldaw,
I've just had a look at the camera you have, i'll try to help. It might be hard to get a real close up, because the 3MP or so won't give you much room to crop but we can try.
Based on another thread, you have a kodak easy share cx7330 camera. I'm not sure what others have indicated, but I hope they don't mind if i repeat anything. Feel free to message me if you want any more help or if something doesn't make sense.
First thing you want to do is find the 'Close Up' setting - You can select this with the dial on top of the camera that you use to turn it on, turn it to the flower. This will allow the camera to focus at around 13 - 70 cm from the coin at wide setting (far) , or 22 - 70cm in telephoto setting (close)
Best to turn off the flash too, as it may cause a shiny coin to be blown out (over exposed) from the reflection.
This is where the photo has 'bright white' where no detail is shown, where you will find even by adjusting the brightness after you have imported the photo to windows you will see no detail.
If you have a small bedside lamp, use this instead to add light to the coin (maybe a 60w lamp or so ?)
From here, the most important part is having the camera stable. The camera you have, because your turning the flash off you can rest it on the raised surface pretty much right up to the lens.
Here is a photo of the kind of setup i'm describing (I normally use a D-SLR but i tried with this compact camera to make sure it was possible)
[attachment=1207]
For 'UNC' coins with lustre, it will help to move the light around so the lustre is still showing, but not heavily reflecting. Normally my D-SLR can handle this as it has sensors for it, but for a compact it's harder (your camera does have a setting to adjust the exposure but as i'm not familiar with it I won't try to adjust that, best to make sure it is at 0 though )
Then, rest the camera on your make shift stand, zoom in / out as close as the camera can focus (half button press) and then take the photo! :)
Here is a couple I took with the setup above. When I imported into windows, I opened the folder, right clicked on the photo and selected EDIT , this should open Windows Photo Gallery, let me know about this step, because in this program (which should be standard in windows vista), you can "auto adjust" which will fix up the colours a bit, and crop the photo too.
No lustre
(http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y484/Fr45h3R/coins004_zps02ea9924.jpg)
One with lustre, I moved the light around a bit so it didn't have too much 'reflective white' areas.
my first try
i think clear
As the camera is only 3mp, that would be the reason you can't get them bigger without starting to go grainy so its not related to the photo you have taken. They look really good. You've improved the exposure of the shots as you've added more photos to this thread (no more blown highlights) and they're quite sharp too!!
Well done!
The orange shots looks like the camera struggled with the white balance, from what I could tell that model didn't have the option to change the setting, but the best thing with digital cameras is you can take a few shots and pick the best one.
I should mention even my small camera is fairly new so its about 10mp or more , with that many pixels you can afford to crop heavily.
I can't wait to pick up a macro lens for my DSLR, which will be able to fill the entire shot with the coin, so no cropping is required.

There is an error by the look of that in the forum script.
One for Mark to look at.

For the time being,

I think you've clicked on something accidently. Click the red "close tags", delete that text and start again. Does that work for you?
thanks rob , i think i can now come to that conclusion too,
new camera needed , this one is a few years old now , but still working very good on other pictures , like when we go on holidays , and at party,s and weddings , and things like that, we bought this camera at peter,s camera house with the dopper and leads for
$ 499.00 and then we had to buy the blank paper to put in the dopper at $ 40.00 per 40 sheets = $ 1.00 per picture . too dear i think and that was back then , so we did not have to go to town to get the pic , but it became to dear and harvey was doing them at about .18 cents ea , so we started to do that . then i saw the same camera , same model an all the extras for around $ 280.00 ea on the ebay ..
so my question now is ?? where to get a new camera ?? what brand and what model ?? and what about the MP,s , is it the more mp,s the better pic can be taken and up close will be easier for me .. this is what i have to find out .. i am not into camera,s in a big way , so i dont want to spend big dollars and buy anything like you mention like DSLR or something like that , i dont even know what DSLR means but i would think it would be a very expenceive sort of camera ..
,, kel ,,
now the sun is shining again , i will go outside and try again to get a clear shot , and then try tinypic again , .
tinypic , so far seams to be the easiest for me to understand , but i still have trouble taking a good clear , sharp , pic with it and no idea how to enlarge it , so maybe with a new camera i will be able to enjoy my hobby a bit better ,.. ,, kel ,,

from tinypic , i cannot enlarge them the first 4
double click and nothing happens .
this is taking them straight from my pictures. the last 4.
double click and they will enlarge .. but only to the same size as tinypic . so really no difference ,..
so i think to get bigger , and better pic , i need a new camera with more MP,S ,, kel ,,
thanks for all your help .. ,, kel ,,
Hi Keldaw,
Quotewhere to get a new camera ??
Online seems to be the way to go. You don't have to spend $100's of dollars these days. Harvey norman / JB hifi can do good deals too if you want to see in hand before purchasing.
Quotewhat brand and what model ??
There are so many out there. Panasonic seem to have a few in the lower price bracket. Choose something with image stabilisation, it can help remove blur when you are taking photos hand held. Look for Optical Zoom (not digital zoom) of around 4x or 5x. Digital zoom is not of concern so don't be fussed about this.
Quoteand what about the MP,s , is it the more mp,s the better pic can be taken and up close will be easier for me ..
The MPs refers to the size the image is, it won't impact the quality.
An uncropped image from a 3mp camera will print on a 5 x 7 (inches) photo and not lose quality but if you start going to 8x10, it will start to look fuzzy if you look close up.
In comparison, an image from a 16mp can be printed on 11x14 with no loss of quality. This is around the same size as four 3mp images, layed out 2 high by 2 wide.
Where say a 14mp or 16mp will help you, is that when you crop the photo, you are still left with enough detail to not look fuzzy or blurry.
Harvey normal have a 16mp with a 3in screen on the back available for $118 http://www.harveynorman.com.au/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fh8-digital-camera.html
DSLR is a Digital SLR, they can get very expensive and this is what the professionals use. There are a few entry level ones available, but they still start around the $400/$500 mark I think. They give you the ability to change lenses depending on the situation, but good lenses cost more than the camera sometimes.
digital zoom .. ,, kel ,,
(http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o787/robster836/fritest009_zpsd551e457.jpg)
Kel, this is taken with a Nikon D3200 that I purchased last year. Was shot hand held with two lights obove the coin. Resized to 600x600 before uploading to photobucket and then to this forum.
Try Cameras Direct on the Gold Coast- the macro lens I am waiting for was $200 cheaper than Adelaide retail.! They can be found online.!
I also get that, so I just retype it as (//) or use the browse button to find the image.
There are so many around, so its probably the best to pick a budget and have a look. I haven't really looked myself, but I'd stick with a better brand. At 16mp with 5x zoom, you should be able to get a nice photo from that. They will be around the same size as the ones I posted earlier in this thread.
The one I linked has 5x optical zoom, and the difference is that there is a physical change the optics of a camera to make the image appear closer. (on that one the lens may move forward and backward as you zoom in and out)
Digital zoom is that same as when you get the image onto the computer, and you use zoom. So if you already are using a digital zoom on the camera, then by the time the image is on the computer, you can't zoom any more without losing quality.
i think .. ,, kel ,,
Quote from: 'keldaw' pid='7794' dateline='1359762855'hi rob , do you think that one at harvey /n would be ok for me to show better and larger pic with ,?? at $ 118 .00 that seems ok price ..
i just want to be able to show big pic,s like you all do so that one day if i get anything worth showing on the forum i will be able to get a grading from you guys ., if you think that one is ok then i can get it . also does it have [ OPTICAL ZOOM ] like you said ,. what it means , i dont know but you said optical zoom would be better then
digital zoom .. ,, kel ,,
Kel and Rob the 3rd,
The little Kodak of Kel's Cannot utilise Zoom whilst
in Macro Mode. The electronics in the camera can't
resolve the Autofocus with this combination.
The result will be a slightly "Out of Focus" image.
(This inability to resolve autofocus is quite common
in just about all Point and Shoot auto's)
Use Macro Mode Only
For this camera, you either move the camera closer
to the subject or move the subject closer to camera.
It would appear that when you crop the coin the image
size is about 300x300, normal for a 3mp camera, you
need to resize image before you save it.
For the Large Picture Look, the image needs to be about
600x600 size (The Forum software will reduce larger sizes)
For Kel, use Tiny Pic to insert a Large image.
The direct forum attachment has a limitation of about 200x200
this will result in a Small image
This is one of your coins Kel, resized to the Large Picture Size.
You will now see that the image was not in focus.
Macro+Zoom = Bad outcome for Mr Kodak.

Might be a Browser problem.
Blocking the "Pop Up" input screen.
What browser and version are you using?
On my Vista machine I'm using FireFox V17
and it is producing the "Undefined" error.
Maybe a new topic thread should be established.
Thanks Fordprefect,
I didn't even realise that the point and shoots had trouble focussing with zoom heheh.
At normal size the pics looked ok, but doubling the size, its easy to see. Even when I rested my point and shoot on the glass It wouldn't zoom much before not being able to focus anyhow.
I normally use my Nikon D200 in Aperture mode and hope everything else works out! I might adjust the exposure a bit to prevent highlights, and if I need to use flash i'll throw on the speedlight with a diffuser.
I have a camera stand lined up, just need to get over to Belly's house to pick it up, and in a few months, if i can hold out on buying coins i'll try to pick up a dedicated macro lense for the nikon.

Yes, resize your pics to the 600x600 size and post via Tinypics,
the Full Size pic will appear in your post.

NO, use MACRO MODE only, do not use any ZOOM.
More mega-pixels would be nice but are not essential.
Focus and lighting are the most important aspects to
get right first.

Well done, improvement is there.
You are very close to your little 3mp cameras capability.
Probably Half of the clear image your looking for, the Kodak
camera with it's low pixel count can't capture.
The Florin is fine :yahoo:
The 6d is marginal (Your running out of pixels):dodgy:

Try a 3d.
The small size that will be captured is probably
going to be very ordinary.
An investment in a larger Mega Pixel camera should be
on your cards.

I'm quite amazed how far these things have come. 16mp, 5x zoom and Leica lens, panasonic brand under $120.

Hope you enjoy Grade Three Kel. Would love to see a bigger coin eg. A penny or a Florin perhaps. Off to golf for me, will look forward to tonight.!
Nice picture Kel. You are doing well!
Very nice Kel. Don't forget to crop them so we can see coin rather than whitespace :)
Kel, try a black background too, that will get rid of all those shadows.
Just tried something but not working
That looks better IMHO.
try making the pictures smaller, my computer will thank you for it ;)

personally I like the last two pictures size, it covers the quality of the coin, you can read the date and see the edges, but if you are wanting to see the details in the surface of the coin then the bigger pictures are what you would use to see scratches and finer detail.
use what you feel appropriate, people will let you know if they would like to see finer detail in a coin or not, great job by the way I like the darker background
I think 800 pixels square is a good size for coin grading.
I think 800 pixels square is a good size for coin grading.
Kel, a massive improvement in one day, straight to Grade 4.! I think somewhere between 600x600 and 800x800 is the best for this forum, especially for grading. I like to take 6 to 8 photos of a coin then pick the best one (focus wise) then crop and resize then upload to photobucket and transfer to here.! Sometimes it takes me 5 mins. to get it right, sometimes 30 mins. All part of our learning curve and given enough time it will become second nature.! The first 2 mules you showed Kel,thats the best way for grading purposes IMO.
Kel, One of the huge advantages of using Tinypic, is that there's no need to resize your images. The forum does that for you automatically. I do suggest that you continue to crop them, as that gets rid of unused background.
I have chosen an image that I haven't resized from my pictures, it's actually an old scan, but it's 529kb, so it's a fair size. Here it it straight from Tinypic:
You'll notice a yellow bar immediately above the image, that's the forum modifying the image size, which has been scaled down. To see the original size, click on the yellow bar, or to see a smaller size, click on the image itself, this is handy if you don't have a larger monitor, it usually saves you from having to scroll to see the whole image.
You should be able to save yourself some time by skipping the resizing of all your images.
Have fun!

Keep going Kel.
Tip: Dump the imposter tripod you are using.
It is not stable enough to allow your camera to focus properly.

Nice pic Robster,I really like the blue Flecks of toning & that cud/blob on the claw/paw & is that another small cud in amonst the whiskers on the other side ?
So busy trying to take a good shot I didn't even notice that cud.! Thankyou.!
I have a few of these 'broken ribbon' 3d coins from different years. I think it might be caused by a filled die. I suppose it could be called an error, I've never really thought about it. I doubt that it would add much of a premium though.
Die fill for sure resulting in a less than good strike.
Have it occur on the '25 Penny (2nd N) and you
have a Collectable Variety, adding a premium.
Coin collectors are a peculiar bunch.
It is in 'the book' as Ribbon broken at R/H bend.!

mark , i take a couple of pic,s of coins , having a practice with my new camera , put it on the forum for a few days and wait for comments about how good or bad are my pic ,s then i go to edit and delete it all in that post , including words and pictures also and leave nothing on that post then it tells me i cannot delete it , as the message is missing and i must have an message with mimumin of 5 letters , so i just write sorry and then i can delete it ok .. ,, kel ,,
Ah I see. Apologies accepted then :)
Kel, If you can see the exact same buttons as I've posted (but smaller) in the bottom right side of each of your posts, the X is the delete key.
So when you're finished with a post, click on it, a pop up will ask if you're sure you want to delete this post, click OK and the post will be gone.
No need to edit anything in the post, just a couple clicks will do the job for you.

Testing my Macro Lens on Unc. $20 note for colour and clarity.
The zero is smaller that the two. Orange and brown don't go together to well. Funny, never seen that on a 20 c piece..............

ok a darker background makes the coin look much nicer, also added a picture of my set up today, its cheap but its doing the job, a lid + coin and using a paperweight to put the camera on so it doesn't shake.
any tips to improve the image

ok added a light source, it was just a torch, but wow that really brings out the detail, might have to look into a better thing than a torch, maybe to ebay for some led's, haha I have a serious dust problem, electrical items crate static.

Photoscape rocks! :yahoo:
Nancy put me onto Photoscape editing program, I found a free download fron the CNET site.!
Simple to use and perfect for cropping, resizing and circular cropping imo.!
I have found that resizing to 600x600 is a great side for posting.!!
