Title: 1988 Silver Holey Dollar
Post by: spraggdean23 on August 06, 2021, 06:17:37 PM
Just got this back from PCGS. It is the closest I will ever get to owning a Holey Dollar.

Nice. Shame it didn't make a higher grade though.

What surprised me was "Proof"? I bought a few of these a while back but just assumed they are uncirculated. I guess they must have both varieties. Must dig mine out and have a look at some stage.

Did you get the dump graded by PCGS as well?   I would have thought the two together would have been a great thing to have in the one capsule.     It was released as a proof pair by Perth Mint by the way,  with the Rainbow Serpent motif and the Wawalag Sisters.

Cheers

Definitely Perth Mint. I picked mine up a few years back at $29 each, both 1988 ones. I seem to recall when PM issued them they were quite dear (no surprise there because PM issues are usually overpriced). They probably were cheaper than $29 though. I've been on the lookout for the 1989 and 1990 ones but never seen them anywhere near as cheap.
Now that silver is ridiculous I've stopped looking.
I would have posted some pics but Add Attachment doesn't seem to do anything.
I'm sure most collectors would have seen them.

No I do not have the dump to get graded. I purchased the coin in an NGC holder by itself. The coin crossed over from NGC.

$29 wow

I found a 1989 set in Christchurch - New Zealand, where I live and was amazed I only paid $90 Keewee for it (About $82 Aussie Pesos). Then again it has 1.25 oz silver which is about $65 in melt now.

The set was in good shape - surprising as the cases for the coins are quite flimsy. I like it - of course to get a real Holey dollar and dump would be so much better!
