Media Release (https://www.ramint.gov.au/category/media-release)
The Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) is taking steps to improve its environmental footprint by introducing sustainable product packaging.
Ahead of World Environment Day on 5 June, the Mint announced the move to an industry-first sustainable pulp packaging solution for the Mint's numismatic product range.
The shift to this new packaging follows the Mint's commitment to meeting the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation's (APCO) 2025 National Packaging Targets.
Leigh Gordon, the Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Mint, notes that packing products in sustainable packaging solutions would reduce the Mint's ecological impact.
"Over the last few years, the Mint has taken strides towards making sustainability a priority in everything we do. With our new sustainable product packaging, we are taking another step in our journey to a waste free future.
"Packaging waste has caused a lot of damage to the environment across the world. In an effort to further reduce our own packaging waste, we are proud to be the first Mint in the world to use a pulp paper packaging solution for our numismatic range."
The Royal Australian Mint has developed a road map to further reduce the ecological impact of their packaging over time and build upon their history of sustainability.
In line with the sustainable packaging targets set by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation, this road map will ensure the Mint is on track to make its product packaging from recyclable or sustainable materials by 2025.
The design and development of the environmentally friendly packaging is driven by a dedicated team, who work in collaboration with a number of suppliers to think innovatively about sustainable packaging.
"Reinventing the packaging for our highly collectible products has not come without its challenges. When developing this new packaging, we needed to consider the longevity of our products and take into account that the packaging of a coin can be just as valuable as the coin itself.
"We have undertaken a great deal of research to ensure our new packaging meets the sustainable packaging guidelines, keeps the coins well protected over the course of its life and continues to meet the expectations of our collector community," said Mr Gordon.
From today, select products from the Royal Australian Mint's numismatic range of coins will be packaged in paper pulp packaging.

This was mentioned in a previous post somewhere but cannot find it now.
Lets hope the recycled material doesn't damage the coins.

They do say that it needs to protect the coin over the course of it's life.
I wonder what they consider it's life span to be.

I don't think I'll be buying any more of these coins then. The packaging is crap, and cheapens the luxury price you pay

I just emailed media, salesinfo and eshop @ramimt.gov.au the following.

QuoteJust thought I'd give you some feedback as a coin collector regarding the new environmental packaging on the back of the media release for World Environment Day
https://www.ramint.gov.au/publications/royal-australian-mint-delivers-new-eco-friendly-product-packaging

It is awful. I won't be buying any $5 coins from now on. My order history with recently purchasing 5 x 3-coin holders indicates that I do have quite the collection.

My thoughts on the new packaging were expressed here when I received a coin in what I consider substandard packaging   https://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=5842

If the Mint is charging such premium prices for a coin, it should be obvious that the customer expects and deserves a premium product.
This new packaging is cheap and tacky, and the whole exercise reeks of a least cost solution to gain "woke points" on environmental day.

As a team exercise, I challenge you to take any $5 coin box from prior to 2021, and put it side by side to this year's Rotary coin. As a team, compare them, open them and try to display them.  There is no way they could be considered equal.

It is an insult to treat your customer base like this, all so you can deliver a media announcement on World Environment Day, and hope to get a few likes on Facebook.
I hope the all important "thumbs ups" are worth it.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel for the link.
I doubt the RAM will change the packing now as they probably have heaps of the new environmentally friendly packaging to use up.
