Title: Testing my new scanner
Post by: JeffH on November 02, 2020, 01:27:45 PM
This images is 1200 x 1197 pixels and just under 1MB. Had to shrink it substantially to load into Forum Gallery.
Original is 5483 x 5469 pixels and occupies just 15MB!
Scanner cost $129 delivered and has 4,800 x 4,800 px/inch resolution. Way cheaper than my first ever scanner with ⅛ the resolution.
P.S. Do you know what that coin is?

Nice Jeff! :good: I'm hoping it's a 34/35 Florin, but I'm no expert on NZ stuff either.

What would you say if I will give that coin to the first correct answer?

I'll guess Fijian florin for the fun of it.

First up...I will not say that coin is a prize for guessing correctly.
Secondly I could have grabbed a new Zealand florin of that vintage but it would not have been as good condition. I do have a full set of Fiji pre-decimal so could have done the same there -and some of those are in rather nice nick. Same obverse for them as the one I put up.
Third, Uni has bragging rights for his first stab at identifying. Here is the reverse.

Well the scanner certainly works well. What's the brand Jeff?

EpsonPerfection V39.
The software with it is rather crappy -lots of options but hard to navigate, extremely confusing and not at all intuitive. I deleted everything it loaded up, just installed the driver and use my paid version of VueScan (https://www.hamrick.com/). VueScan is a very good third party scanner software which works with virtually any scanner. When a previous scanner gave scrambled results the developer had an upgrade within a few hours that sorted it out.
P.S. VueScan will not baulk at scanning modern banknotes with the EURion Constellation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation).

Thanks for the lesson on image scanning. You learn something new every day. Well I do anyway.
My scanner is an Epson but it is a joint scanner printer and it whinges all the time because I don't have ink in the printer cartridges, even though I'm not using the printer. The software certainly isn't intuitive in this one either.

I have a Canon all in one that I have been using just as a scanner since I bought a colour laser printer last year. Monstrous machine that takes up too much desk space. Time to pension it off now.
The laser printer is much cheaper to run. Sort of confirms the story that the profit is in replacement ink cartridges, not the initial sale of the printer itself.
I used to use generic cartridges until the printer downloaded a software update which enabled it to recognise non genuine cartridges and lock up until they were replaced with genuine cartridges. This despite me having a device to program the cartridges to look like genuine ones or reset genuine, refilled cartridges. That software update cannot be wound back!

Well there ya go! I'd hoped it would be a 34/35 for ya Jeff! Had a lovely choice unc one back in the early 90s but had to sell it during a hard time a few years later (along with most of my really good stuff). Thanks for the scanner tips, that one sounds nice. I've lost count of the number of scanners I've had now, that last one I have (had) is a Canon LiDE 700F which unfortunately crapped itself about 2 months after the warranty expired. I liked it too as the cover allowed books much better. Not to worry. No need for a prize eh, I've got that much stuff that needs sorting, but your generosity is only exceeded by your ........................................... (Jeff can fill in the blank). :laugh2:

Nice scans,i wish those clowns on Ebay using Phone Camera's to sell valuable coins would use a scanner.
I recently purchased a Lide 400 as my main scanner was bringing up the wrong colours especially with copper.
$160+ and is very 'tinny' and cheaply made, they have even removed the on/off switch which was on my previous Lide.
Winge ended, time to bet on the horses.

Have you tried Paint.net (https://www.getpaint.net/) program? Has easy to use colour balance adjustment.
VueScan also has something similar to adjust the colour appearance as you scan.

No Jeff,my main Scanner is a Microtek, they make a lot of Pro/Medical scanners but it is over 10 years old and very slow, they have inbuilt colour adjustments but is not working properly.I'll try that 'Paint.net' programme down the track.
