Title: Rennicks Coin Catalogue
Post by: Goldseeker on May 12, 2020, 04:51:06 PM
I have been a Greg Macdonald catalogue fan for years but due to the lack of information, in regards to a further edition, I bent and bought a Renniks today, edition 29.

I have had a quick look at it and I am not impressed with the layout at all.   Maybe in/over time I will get used to it.

However, one glaring error/mistake or whatever is on page 76 with the 2015 ANZAC Remembered listing.   They list the Red poppy $1 at 12,500 minted with a value of only $5.00.   Whereas in Gregs catalogue, edition 23, he shows the value as $175.00.

That's one heck of a valuation difference if I say so myself.

The sane coin on a card on Ebay starts at $850.00.

I think that the person who does the valuations in Renniks needs to update his information that he/she collects to work out valuations values on coins.

I bet if I walked into a coin dealer today and asked to buy the same coin, I bet I would have to pay a lot more that Renniks or Greg's last catalogued value.

It seems strange that in the past, very few dealers had prices on the coins they were selling.   One would walk in, ask for a price for a coin and the dealer would pick up the latest Macca's catalogue.   I wonder if they now do the same with a renniks.

If I value my collection as per Renniks prices, I might as well throw my collection in the garbage bin for what it is worth.

Both Cattle dogs have their positives and their flaws.

The new renniks will be out in a months....do not know about maccas

I have noticed of late some huge price increases in some of the $2, $1 and 50c over the last few months. Lets see if Renniks takes these on board

Read the WARNING about prices on the first page....It is important to realise that those prices are a GUIDE to what dealers may sell these coins for in that grade...

both catalouges are out dated as none use the sheldon /  numerical grades pcgs uses , and we know that a top population coins even if the actual coin is not scarce in low grades is worth a fair premium over a gem coin

It's outdated because the prices come from late 2018. A lot of these modern issues have risen in price quickly and a physical catalogue has not been able to keep up. However, I do recall the poppy dollar being worth more than $5 in 2018.

If that's the only error in the modern section of the book, I think they've done a good job.

Does anyone know if the Renniks books identify the first and last serials for the decimal and pre-decimal banknotes please?

I purchased a Rennicks Catalogue earlier this year as I couldn't find a MacDonalds anywhere.

Now they bring out a new Rennicks.

I shall wait till next year and get the new one then as it should have some errors that I reported corrected by then.

I did get an email from Rennicks earlier when I reported the errors but they said it was too late to correct as the new rennicks was on the printing press.

Hmm, might visit my local library and see if they will get the new one in, if they haven't already.

does anyone think the time has come to include a sheldon only  scale in the prices of coins in any future catalouges , and a raw coins only price section , as the 2 would give entirely different prices

Yes, they are two different horses for sure and should be dealt with separately IMO. Although, when it comes to quality items I don't think the difference in value should be excessive, it only needs to reflect the slabbing, insurance and postage costs.

surely the top population coins , especially if they are the only top pop coins are worth serious money , even on common dates

No doubt collectors may drive up the price of a common date top pop coin but, there may also be raw coins out there that grade equally or better. It's all hypothetical I know but, in a situation where a choice had to be made between a top pop in a slab, and a raw coin that you knew would grade similarly, the price would be the determining factor for me.

Guides are for raw coins not slabs and not for pricing
