I was just wondering if any of our members have been impacted
by these terrible bush fires. I know there are members in NSW,
QLD & S.A., so I hope you are all safe.
I am in the middle of the metro area in Perth and we still came
under threat yesterday. The red danger zone finished only
200m from our home. The freeway that is close by was closed
in both directions, causing traffic chaos, and the local shopping
centre was closed and evacuated. All good now though and I
haven't heard of any major damage.
I think we're pretty safe here, the nearest 'bushland' is Toohey Forest Park, a fair distance away.
I hope everyone else is safe.
Yes Steve, we've had them close for months now. In every direction of the compass. Smoke was so bad during one period that they cancelled school here for a whole week. We couldn't even see 200m down the paddock for the week. Have had 2 instances where a few trinkets were quickly thrown in the ute ready for Mrs & Little Miss Uni to leave with the trailer for the dogs. Blocked and flooded all the gutters and hosed down. Very scary and long night. Had one later only a few km away (it's all 60 foot forest from it to us). The RFS did a great job on that one, they had 2 teams of 4 large units, tanker and patrol vehicle, plus lots of smaller crews doing relay shifts over a few days and got it under control. The NSW RFS page (along with Sentinel & hotspots) have been open on my PC for months .... apart from the umpteen power outages we had when it was bad. It's pretty good here now in comparison, fingers crossed.
Terrible bush fires here too folks, not very close to us but the smoke is very bad. At one point the pollution indicator was in 2000 units ! I live in a place where I can see the blue mountains and Gosper mountain ranges. Closest fires would have been about 40 kms from where we are. Stay safe and alert.
I would like to know who will sort out the lot of money that is been sent as donations ? who is in charge of that ? and also how will it be given out to whom ? most houses are insured , maybe not enough to cover all damage to a house to be rebuilt , but will the extra be handed over to cover the gap ? and will the greedy councils grab a big slab of it also .?? big questions need to be answered .
millions of dollars here guys .
we lost power for a week , a few years ago , and the whole town had to throw out all the food from our freezers and fridges ,. greedy hands came from every where , for the $ 180.00 per head handed out at the hall on Friday after noon , no questions ask as long as you gave your name and address , people even rang their friends who came to the town for just 1 hour , gave that address of their friends and were handed $ 180.00 . what a racket that was ..

No worries where I live north of Brisbane, but wish I could assist by looking after some of the hurt animals.
Although the bush fires seem to have come close to a few of you,
I am glad to see all is well.
+ 1 Steve, personally I feel very fortunate.

I have just popped outside for a quick look and I can hardly see across the other side of the road due to the smoke haze here in our suburb of ST ALBANS,
My eyes are hurting and there is a foul taste in my mouth.
And this is just the beginning of the next 24-36 hours of smoke haze etc. that has been forecast for Melbourne.
Stay safe Goldie and I hope it all ends well.
You have a ship to catch.

Yeah, disasters like this bring out the best and worst in people, the last severe Flood in Lismore a few years back had looters entering deserted Homes/Shops on a massive scale,Golfing friend was a Policeman there at the time and the extent of looting was downplayed by them, local Radio & Paper as well, so as not to give the Town a bad name.
Hope everyone that Post on here are safe and well,Friends in Tenterfield had a bad time before Xmas, mainly from the Smoke and Ash,they left to stay in Ballina for a couple of weeks as they were having trouble breathing.
I was part of a fire relief drive last Saturday.
We took 2 semi trailers of donations (food, water, clothes, toiletries, etc, etc) to Merimbula.
There were vast areas burned, but from coverage in the media I was expecting worse damage.
E.g. I was expecting bushland to look like tree trees would not recover, but mostly it looked like trees would recover.
I was expecting Mogo and Cobargo to be completely destroyed and have no buildings left, but there were buildings left.
We are safe here living in the inner city suburbia of Melbourne but the outskirts of Melbourne have had some singing and fires close by.
Melbourne would have to burn for me at St Albans to cope a fire.
Yeas, six days to go ana wife and I will be on the high seas on the Sun Princess.
Trouble is, there are two cyclones off the north west coast of western Australia that could make the trip a wee bit interesting between Fremantle and Singapore.
Lucky you and well done for a job in getting supplies down to those that need.
Wife and I made a substantial financial contribution as we were informed that cash was required as they had more than enough food, clothing etc.
It will be interesting to find out with all the cash aid flowing in, how that will be distributed amongst those that have lost everything or most of everything.
Those people that have insurance, will they get the same handout as those that don't?
It has always puzzled me that when cash is donated, there are always some people who were not even in the bushfire areas and who have lost nothing still make a claim for a share of the spoils, (Money) that is.
One thing that some of Australia's plants need to survive is fire.
I have seen pictures of plants already regrowing in blacked and parched area.
In recent days I travelled through Tenterfield and Glen Innes areas, saw some fire damage (not as much as I expected) and, judging from regrowth, not very recent. A lot of that New England area was very green, suggesting recent rains. There were some heavy showers in Guyra when we were there but nobody was complaining.
I suspect the recent fires were not where we would have seen them from the highway. Plenty of smoke though.
On Monday, returning home we drove through ground level cloud and after Armidale segued into smoke -the outlook on the horizon looked similar but the smarting eyes and absence of moisture on the windscreen told otherwise.
