Title: 1st coin mintage of the millenium
Post by: eirrab on January 01, 2020, 11:27:32 AM
Did anyone else make it to the draw for the first 100 coins minted at the RAM? Was a good crowd so felt lucky to get the 12th one in the draw.

Well done.   Hope you like the coin.

But in saying that, it certainly wasn't a "millennium" but the first for 2020.

The millennium was 2000.

Sorry to be so picky.

The millenium started in 2001 and Canberra minted a 1 ounce silver coin to celebrate it (has Cleopatra's Needle on it).

It is amazing how many people don't realize that 2020 is the last year of the 20 teens and that the 20's don't start till next year.
I blame the media and the schools.

Technically you are absolutely right.
However, the vast majority of people around the world have decided that a new decade begins with 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020, 2030 ectr.

We had this argument 10 years ago and nothing is going to change peoples' minds now.

Oops, my bad.
At least it was the 12th coin minted for the year -world wide.
The Mint did a great job, with heaps of kids getting prizes and lots of media coverage in Canberra on WIN news. Lots of excitement and interest. It was well organised and they not only put the coins carefully in capsules and presentation box, but had nice certificates of authenticity with each one, a $20 gift voucher, and a folder for the PO $1 alphabet coins (obviously made too many!).
Thank you RAM for making our holiday to Canberra more eventful.

Realistically you are wrong...The day after you turn one year old you are in your second year...The day after 2020 you are in the second decade of the two thousands.... :sun_bespectacled:

Yep, that is totally wrong. The first year was not year 0. It was year 1 as we count. That makes 10 the first decade complete and the first day of year 11 the start of the next decade.

When realistic people think of the 90s,they think of the period from 1990-1999. Just doesn't make sense that the year 1990 would be considered as part of the 80s..."KISS'' keep it simple sweetheart.. :whistle2:

That is the kind of wrong thinking that perpetrates the myth. Teach the truth instead of the lie.

Dear oh dear this thread is getting out of hand a tad.

Both trains of thought are correct. There is no "truth" or myth. There is simply a way of perceiving a decade cardinally or perceiving it ordinally.

End of story.

Can I have a turn

Ok, so it's the 1st of January, straight after the big bang, or at any point in history we wish to choose. In any case lets call it year 01.

It will obviously be one years duration after reaching 31-12-01

It will be ten years duration upon reaching 31-12-10

Therefore, the new decade will commence on 01-01-11, 01-01-12 and so on, all the way up to 2021.

That's how it works up here among the Toads and banana benders anyway

The only thing that differs is the Mexicans get there first due to that silly daylight saving   :laugh2: :laugh2:
