Title: Australian $200 coin
Post by: Jake The Snake on December 23, 2019, 07:21:58 PM
Hello,

I've an Australian $200 coin which weighs 10.32 grams which concerns me given these should weigh 10 grams flat. Everything else about the coin seem legit which has me wondering whether some coins did come in over weight.
Any of you people ever owned one that weighed in over 10 grams?

Is this one of the Koalas? And yes to be off by .32 grams is quite significant. Honestly I've never weighed mine but I bought it in 1980 when it was issued.
How accurate are your scales with regard to other issues? Have you tried a crown for example or even a MoR dollar?

It's a 1991 Emu.
Scale is accurate, I've weighed another of my $200 coins on it from a different year which weighs 10 grams dead.

I'd certainly be worried with that big a variation but I can't help with checking it. Outside my field of expertise. It would be great if it was an extra third of a gram of gold for free.

I think by 1991 planchet production may have moved off-shore? Or are precious metal planchets still produced in Australia?

Should be 10 gram dead.
