Title: Alphabet $1 Coins
Post by: brismike on September 19, 2019, 11:50:24 AM
I saw a post on ebay for alphabet $1 coins today, here is a link ...

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2019-Meat-Pie-1-X-1-Dollar-EX-Mint-Bag-UNC/223669992347?hash=item3413c53b9b:g:QowAAOSwKC5dgcUU (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2019-Meat-Pie-1-X-1-Dollar-EX-Mint-Bag-UNC/223669992347?hash=item3413c53b9b:g:QowAAOSwKC5dgcUU)

The seller has a few different ones listed at $5.95 each. Looks like they are taken out of RAM bags.

Edit - When checking an hour later the price has gone up to $11.95 WTF?

They have these ones ...

A - Australia Post
F - Footy
I - Iced Vo Vo
M - Meat Pie
S - Surf Life Saving
X - Xantippe

I can't find any mention of them on the RAM website.

Anyone know how these are being distributed?

Regards Mike

I contacted the RAM and they said they can't say anything as it is an Australia Post thing.

I called up Australia Post Collectibles shop and they said they are not supposed to be released until the end of the month.
They were very interested about the fact they were already on Fleabay.

Cheers Mike

I've seen on a Facebook group that some people have been able to get them already through Australia Post. I went to my local PO and they said the coins were not available until October 1st. It is a 26 coin uncirculated set and they will cost $49. I also read that the coins will be put in the tills in Australia Post (exclusively).

Depending on the mintage figures getting a complete set from change could be very difficult to imposssible. :@
Reminds me of the 10p A-Z set by the Royal Mint in the UK.

I don't see how they could have more than a mintage of 500,000 each, so it would be well worth picking up a couple of the sets. I don't think I'll bother trying to complete a circulation set

I have emailed the RAM and AustPost re ANNACOINS breaking the embargo in fact of being in possession of these coins before the 30 Sep 2019.

If and when I get any response from to my emails, I shall post responses here.

Maybe we should ALL contact ANNACOINS and complain and ask her how she got the coins?

Well I have made several phone calls this morning and here's what I have discovered re the release of the new Alphabet Coins.

I phoned the RAM and a spoke person informed me that this release of the alphabet coins was a contract between the RAM and Australia Post and that Australia Post paid the RAM to produce these coins.

The RAM also stated that all the coins were sent to Australia Post for distribution and ONLY to Australia Post.

The embargo was also placed on the coins by Australia Post.

Now another phone call to Australia Post Head Office resulted in the following information.

Australia post distributed the coins only to Australia Post and non were delivered to dealers or private organizations.

The embargo was in force up until the 20 Sep 2019.

Australia Post is very concerned that a quantity of coins have been put into general circulation via Ebay and other sources.

I have given both the RAM and Australia Post details of the dealer that is currently selling these coins on Ebay and has been selling them since the 18/19 Sep 2019.

I intend to forward a complaint to ANDA and the RAM re the breaking of the embargo.

I trust that other members of this forum will follow up with complaints to get this dealer into trouble with Australia Post and ANDA.

I noticed that the Royal Mint did exactly this same promotion last year, with two pound coin.

They are still selling the complete set set for fifty two pounds (face value).

wonder if we will have the chance to buy a full set at face value?
Anybody heard?

I don't recall seeing anything about RM doing a set in 2 pound coins,
only the 10 pence coins. Those were selling for 52 pounds for the set.
Way above face value.

Post by: brismike on September 30, 2019, 07:34:21 PM
I went to my local Post Office today and bought a $1 stamp. I got three of the alphabet coins in change.

A "F" for Footy, an "I" for Iced Vo-Vo and an "M" for Meat Pie. So it seems they are being issued in a random order

plus I have seen definite confirmation of the following ...

The full set plus the folder will be available for $49 from 28/10/2019

A Proof Set in a presentation case will be available for $370 from 28/10/2019

A Fine Silver Proof Set in a presentation case will be available for $1295 from 28/10/2019

I also phoned Australia Post and complained about the ebay sellers, They were very interested and said they were investigating.

Cheers Mike

So I just bought a $1 stamp and pocketed a few of the till ones.

The thing is what are the first six? I have seen more than six letters being picked up by different people already. I got F, I M, S & X others have had A & L.
So it seems they are going out in random order. Has anyone got different letters?

I bought some $1 stamps at the beginning of the week, which I will use anyway.
Then I bought an envelope that I needed. The next day I bought a $2 stamp for
the envelope. By the end of the week the staff were just giving me the coins I
needed and now they have a money bag in the till with my name on it and they
will just put coins in there every day for me. Just need to pop in at the end of
the week and pick them up. Now I just have to hope it all goes to plan. :)

Don't panic about securing these from Post Offices or eBay just wait until end of October and buy the tube

Quote from: 'runway' pid='120497' dateline='1570699845'Don't panic about securing these from Post Offices or eBay just wait until end of October and buy the tube

But they have -- well, at least the one with letter ''A'' -- a privy mark. Great idea. Unfortunately, it immediately identifies them as coins from the tube. They are more ''collector coins'' than ''circulation coins.'' Yes, I am fully aware, some of them will make it into actual circulation and the $1 denomination is a circulation denomination. But for me, the $1 with privy marks aren't ''actual'' circulation coins. (I hope this makes sense to our readers...)
Title: RE: Alphabet $1 Coins

My take on this entire scenario is that random tubes will have the privymark, if the tubes are not sealed I would be very wary of buying them from certain dealers ... very similar to to 2016 $5 new notes

Title: RE: Alphabet $1 Coins
Post by: JeffH on October 18, 2019, 03:45:49 PM
Managed to get seven today at the P.O. -required purchasing three $1 stamps in three separate transactions. They are strictly enforcing the need to purchase to get any.
At least now they have them in a container and not in the till (they ran out first week giving them out willy nilly and, when asked if they had any, none left to give people who actually wanted some). The bank teller told me she asked and was told a limit of one per day per person.

So now I have eight of them and six different letters.
Local P.O. did say they were considering a swap session when the promotion ends.

I managed to get all eight this week.
No purchase required.
That's 20 down now and last 6 to go next week.
I'll be glad when it's over.
Then I have to go to the coin show and get all
the baggie coins, that I haven't been able to
get all year. All too much expense in one time
of the year.

My last PO crawl today to get the last 6. One PO I went to had run out in the first week, but ended up ordering more and got more 1st week ones in. They have been really nice and saved me a set last week and then gave me another 2 sets in change for a chocolate bar. They had a few envelopes with the set for the week in their drawer, so i was not the only one to benefit from their generosity. It means I now will have some swaps if anyone needs some gaps filled.

The Australian government has revised its 2019 currency determinations.
If I see it correctly they have put the old ones (#1 to #5) into one new (dated 09-Oct-2019). Furthermore the ''Perth Mint'' determinations are also listed there.

They have put the A-Z $1 coins into the ''non-circulating coins'' section.

I now have the full set of A-Z coins and the folder.   However, the $9 folder does not retain the coins too well as every time I open the folder, coins fall out.   Not a very successful item.

Now for the Rolls and proof set to be released next Monday, 28/10/19.

As the post office has them in the till and

how the RAM could list them as non-circulating.
(Although they might not circulate for long,
just like the coloured $2 coins).

Selected from the entire alphabet or just the letter ''A?''

Well, I guess, we'll know by Monday.

Well I went and forked out many dollars for todays Alphabet coins and ended up with six tubes.

Got home, opened each tube and got this out of the last tube checked:   The hard to find Letter Mint Marked coin:

Where do they get the idea that people are actually going to open these rolls? I'm going to keep mine for 50 years and then sell them off to the highest bidder. Thus, I'll never know whether I got the privy marked coin or not.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

The remains is that I now have SIX damaged tubes each with 26 coins and at present I am stuck with them.   (I re=placed the Mint mark "A" coin with one of my spares).

It would seem that there are very few privy marked coins and chance of getting one is slim.
I haven't looked but I suspect that would prompt an eBay feeding frenzy.

I bought 2 tubes last week with no privy coin..... Today I bought 3 tubes and got one in the last one I opened. I believe there are 7,500 privy marked coins so there must be 37,500 tubes, seeing as I have heard there is a one in 5 chance of getting one.

The Aluminium-bronze Proof sets sold out in less than an hour, 1250 sets at $370 each.

The Silver Proof Sets were all gone by 2pm, 250 sets at $1395 each.

ps - if you need to buy an individual coin to make up a set of 26 from the ones given in change at the Post Office, buy them online from Aussie Post at $3 each. The are offering free shipping unlike the RAM who charge $10.

Cheers Mike

I was going to buy one this morning, but I couldn't find the listing on the Australia Post website, so I assumed they'd run out. I reckon it would be cheaper to get one from a roll than to pay what they're charging on Fleabay, so I can't understand why they even bothered to make the PNCs in the first place. It's just another opportunity for greed, and there's far too much of that in the coin collecting community.
Title: RE: Alphabet $1 Coins
Post by: Hercules on November 02, 2019, 06:57:39 PM
If each roll costs $49 and has a 1/5 chance of having the privy marked coin, you will need to spend an average of $245 in order to get one from a roll. However, each roll comes with 26 $1 coins, which enables you to recoup $129 (excluding the privy marked coin. Hence, the privy marked coin is worth at most $116, and less if you assume the other coins are worth more than face value. For example, if the non privy marked coins are worth $1.50, then the privy marked coin is only worth $48.50, which is about what the PNC was retailing for. Hence, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it, because anything more than that is a blatant rip-off.

I just did a heads/tails sort on a $500 bag of $1 banked by the local bowling club.
29 alphabet coins (22 different letters). Have yet to check but, with what I already have, that should put me close to a full set.
The Bowlo generates their $1 coin banking from poker machine change.

Now to see if the laundromat brings in a bag soon. Haven't had one from them for a while. Will be interesting to see if any turn up from there too.

Well the privy mark "A" coin is a 1 in 10 chance, with 7500 made, so that's 750,000 full set released on top of all the regular circulating ones. So in terms of uncirculated ones, per letter, that's pretty low mintage. less than 3,000 :O

I say 1 in 12 as we opened 12 tubes for 1 Privy mark coin.
Title: RE: Alphabet $1 Coins
Post by: JeffH on November 22, 2019, 01:24:48 PM
Could still be 1 in 5.
Opening 5 tubes at 1 in 5 chance gives you a 67% chance of scoring one. Opening 12 tubes improves the odds to 93% -that means in 7% of instances of opening 12 tubes you will not score any.
Of course you could score more than one if you are lucky.

[My figures assume that, on average, 1 in 5 tubes has a privy mark coin and no tube has more than one and the distribution of tunes is random.]

I ended up with 5 sets. Two came from LPO, one from a dealer and two from the philatelic section of Australia Post that seems to have branched into coins to supplement the revenue that they haven't been getting from stamp collectors that have been alienated by their money grabbing ways.

I didn't want to but I opened all 5 sets.

The ones from the Local Post Offices (which aren't run by Australia Post), no privy marked A coin.
The one from the dealer, no privy marked A coin.
The two from AP Philatelic, two privy marked A coins.
Pretty glad I got those last two sets. If you haven't gotten one, you might want to try your luck with them.

I see the price for these is getting more reasonable on fleabag. One sold tonight for $147.

There are mintage figures for these?
I thought they were "special order" coins like Possum Magic, Mr Squiggle and the Olympic $2 series and RAM didn't release data on how many minted. Not considered circulating coins as far as RAM was concerned.

The mintage figures for these ''special order coins'' can usually be found in the RAM's annual reports. But you need to look deep into the reports.
For example, the Mr Squiggle coins had a mintage of 2.000.000 each. Found in Appendix D ''collector coin production'' of the 2018 report.

Therefore, the figures for the Alphabet coins should eventually show up in a future annual report.

I figured they would be in annual reports. They just don't release them on their website, only exception being the 2012 Red poppy which was a special order to make money for the RSL.
Have you managed to turn up any more special order mintage figures out of the annual reports?
It is always nice to see mintage figures.
Thanks for any info.

Yes, most commonly the mintages for the special programs are included in the Appendix D (Collector Coin Production) section of RAM Annual Reports.

RAM 2015/16 Olympic coins mintages at page 105 - 2m for each of the Olympic colour & the Paralympic coins.

RAM 2016/17 Possum Magic page 107 (4.8m across the 3 weeks - 2m for weeks 1 & 3 and 800,000 for week 2). There is a bit of a question mark there as the commentary within the 2017/18 Annual report indicates the mintage as approximately 6m (p14). Perhaps the week 2 number was not correct?

Unless I've missed it along the way the only reference I have noted for the 2018 Commonwealth Games issues is in the commentary also on page 14 of that report which indicates a total mintage of approx 8m.

RAM 2018/19 Mr. Squiggle page 107 - 2m for each week & Wallabies 2m page 108.
