Title: Australia's Dollar Discovery
Post by: kchan1111 on November 01, 2018, 09:17:34 PM
The Aussie dollar is 35 years old. To celebrate, we've created Australia's Dollar Discovery – a nation-wide treasure hunt.

Simply collect the $1 coins specially marked with the number '35' and either the letter A, U or S for your chance to win. There are over 1 million of each letter in circulation, so get hunting!

Well I have registered. Will this see noodling go mainstream?

If circulation was fair it may catch on

Most people will be disappointed, because the only way to get all 3 is to noodle or to hope on eBay. You've got Buckley's hope of receiving all 3 in your change. That's why I got into noodling, because it was getting too hard to find coins with very low mintages. However, I doubt many other people can be bothered to go to the bank to ask for coins, let alone noodle them for hours on end. I'm sure that I will be able to create many complete sets, but most novices will decide that it's all too hard.

The RAM has been trying hard for years to encourage coin collecting, but has shot itself in the foot.
Steadily and surely our RAM is ruining coin collectors' chances of completing their collections. First, there were the coloured versions of the 2015 AFL and NRL dollars, available only by ballot. Buckley's chance of getting those. Then we have the Commonwealth Games mascot coloured dollar with the GC counterstamp, released day by day in marked packets.  If you were there every day you had a slim chance of getting one or two – otherwise, forget it.  Next, they ran out of the AC/DC 50 cent coin.  Not only that, but the frosted version exists only for the ten subscribers who got one by chance, so there's another gap in the album.  Now we have three privymark one dollar coins in circulation that will be unavailable any other way because of their value to competition entrants. So, you'll never complete your collection with any of those, even in used condition. Might as well start collecting matchbox labels instead.
Well done, Minties!

Not that it matters but i agree,History & Golden Gooses means nothing to the current Marketing of the Mints.
Just Managers near the top of the tree trying to make sure they receive their bonus's.

I worked part time,mainly W/ends & School Holidays,for a local Antiques/2nd hand Dealer in the 1960's and i always remember one of his favourite axiom's was "never collect anything that was sold as a collectible",i think that applies to the Mints offerings these days.
Slightly OT but its not just Coins that get faked,he was also very savvy with Petroleum memorabilia,even back then talented artists were faking signs,they would take a common sign such as Shell,BP etc and strip paint and turn it into a rarer one such as Neptune,Atlantic,COR etc. and they were very hard to pick,i guess many of the rarer signs traded today are re-po's.

There was a Neptune with his trident just down the road when I was a kid. That's where I would buy a small packet of Craven A ciggies, for my Dad of course :blush:  Oops sorry, off subject  :)

Yes, they will. I'm going to noodle them en masse and sell them at inflated prices on eBay. Or, I could just hoard them and wait for their value to skyrocket. Either way, they'll be able to buy them from me at exorbitant prices. Mates rates will apply to anyone on this forum. :winkextra:

I went and got five bags of $1 coins from the Commonwealth bank yesterday. Just to try my luck.

Asked the lady if she could grab news ones.
"They come pre bagged, it's random".

Yeah yeah, I thought. Surely she'll be able to see.

Nope, she managed to grab five of the oldest, most damaged coins in existence. Almost like she found bags which were earmarked for destruction.

Thanks CBA, you've done it again :lol:

Having arrived back in Australia on Saturday, 3/11/18 to be met with the fact of a 2019 $1 coin found in circulation and then to read that some coins were found to have an "A"< "U" or "S" and 35 emblassened upon the reverse.

What, I thought.

Anyway, out shopping the same day to secure needed food and low and behold I was able to secure 4 bags of the NEW 2018/2019 $1 coins.

Off home, opened the bags and ended up 14 full sets of the A/U/S coins.   How lucky can one be.

Since then, I have secured another three or four bags of coins, ($20.00 bags), and I now have 23 full sets and can now supply a requirement to a gent in WA of six sets.

I have plenty of spare "A" and "U"s if people are short.

Please PM me if required.

I see Melbourne Mint are now putting a set of three of these coins out in a folder.

https://www.melbournemintcoins.com.au/shop/melbourne-mint-celebrating-35-years-of-the-one-dollar-coin-folder/

Priced at an eye gouging $34.95 plus $10.99 Postage

They can't even describe them properly calling them Counterstamps when they are actually Privymarks.

But Mike..........these are "specially struck" with "unique counterstamps"  and a "limited mintage"................that clanking noise you heard was the bottom of the barrel being scraped......................don't you just love advertising departments!
Coins are no longer needed so we will  make them now with bits of coloured paint or put the dog down the street on them or get the letter punch set out and hit a few. Instant rarities!! Now let me see is that not what happened to those bits of sticky paper you used to put on snail mail? Now that industry was a booming success! Stands to reason if that worked why not with coins.
That's called creating a bubble and as I read these forums I think collectors are getting tired of  "bubbles"?
Fred.

It amuses me that Post Offices sell special stamps sets but, if you post a letter and want to use a stamp you have to specifically ask for one otherwise you get a printed label.
A Post Shop franchisee told me that they actually get a very slightly larger commission for stamps but the printed labels are more convenient for the staff.

Sooner or later these bubbles (https://www.investopedia.com/features/crashes/crashes3.asp) will burst and we will be reduced to eating our tulip bulbs (https://www.investopedia.com/features/crashes/crashes2.asp) (mint marks, counterstamps and privy marks having no nutritional value).

I gave up collecting these at the start of this year, after collecting for over 50 years.
The amount of crap they were churning out just turned me off. Unfortunately, the
RAM, and other mints, are heading the same way. I might have to go back and
collect only 20th century or earlier.

Maybe the higher commission on stamps is part of them trying to promote it. I can't imagine stamps being cheaper to print than the labels.

You would think that all suppliers of Packaging and folders etc would think it in THEIR interest to ensure that products of this nature are archival quality, but I still see dealers supplying the public with those soft, PVC laced plastic album pages  :@

I gave up after a few pages.

Use "Ctrl F" to search.

Thanks, works a treat.

Kel, click on the link so you can go to the list of winners, then press Ctrl and F to bring up the search box.
Type in your name to find it.

Just sorting out what I have noodled;
•10 x 'A'
•5 x 'U'
•7 x 'S'
That suggests they are reasonably evenly distributed; at least in this area.

I have four folders so want to make up sets accordingly. Only managed to get one really good set. Plenty of clean, bright ones with a good strike but let down by the scratches and gouges. Oh well, keep trying I guess or just accept some lesser condition for subsequent sets.

 4 x A ==
 1 x S ==
 1 x u == ,

 so I am happy with that .
