The newspapers mostly have depressing news reports; wars, natural disasters, finance sector misbehaviour, bitching 'celebrities' (the poor, precious darlings!), carnage etc.etc.
It's Good News Week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyE0NedXWpM)......but mostly not.
I do like to see good news that uplifts my spirits but apparently that does not sell newspapers. So if you see a nice news item that uplifts your spirits, post it here for everyone to enjoy.
I will kick it off with one I saw yesterday that touched me. From Wales With Love (http://fijisun.com.fj/2018/08/18/from-wales-with-love/)
Over to you.
Great article. Thanks for sharing Jeff. :)
The good news is that President Trump has been quite for a couple of days....hope it continues.
Here is my contribution.
Teachers donate 100 sick days to colleague with cancer
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45214174
Another good story.
I have 260 sick days accrued.
Hopefully I will never need them.
Friend of mine used to be a policeman. He said when someone is about to retire. They will go on stress leave to flush out all their sick leave balance.
An organisation I worked for used to offer a payout on unused sick leave -a percentage that increased with years of service- to stop that happening.
I took a voluntary redundancy some years ago, after 28 years service, and got the same deal as well as accumulated long service leave and annual leave plus the redundancy offer. That was enough to discharge the balance of our mortgage and have enough to be able to pay the bills while I worked out how best to get an income. Rolled over my super and was also able to add some to it. All up ended paying negligible tax on the payout.
Nice work JeffH.
Every time I leave a job, I ask if they are looking to retrench people first before I resign. Just in case. :)
I have never changed job. 40 years service in 2 months time.
That's incredible. Do they actually give you a gold watch?
In IT, on average you change job every 3 years.

Back when I broke my back in the public service, my sick leave accumulated to an embarrassing level. When the razor gang and a shonky doctor conspired to terminate my career, the friendly HR department arranged to split up my sick leave, long service and other bits and pieces to ensure my income was split over two tax years and I got the maximum possible. I made out like a bandit, and it was about the only time I had a positive opinion of public servants anywhere.

I received a gold watch for 25 years service.
Not sure what they might give me for 40.
Maybe a $5000 account at the coin shop of
my choice. :)
That sounds like wishful thinking. Have you dropped any subtle hints?

I hope to see a j next week as we head out for Melbourne and geelong to see our grand daughter plus our new 7months old great grand daughter then hope to call into the Canberra mint and Canberra city on our way back home . Will find a caravan park near by at queenbeann , or some where close by , I don't want to drag a caravan all around Canberra .
Say Hello for me as well Kel.,he certainly kept the momentum going on this Forum the first couple of years i Posted.
Too true Basil.
I know the cold weather plays havoc with him so with the way it's been of late he's probably hibernating.
Missed Robbie's visit -away in Beechworth at present. I wonder how her 1964 babies are going?
I Thought this was a nice story.
Arnhem Land's awesome foursome (http://todayspaper.smedia.com.au/smhdaily/shared/ShowArticle.aspx?doc=SMH%2F2018%2F09%2F10&entity=Ar04902&sk=CDEAA57D&mode=text)
we got back from Victoria a couple of weeks ago and were relaxing at home on Monday when a letter came from our doctor asking us to get in touch with him urgently,
on march 2016 dawn had an ultra sound on her left kidney and they found a large lump , but were not worried about as it looked ok , march this year 2018 she had another ultra sound and they said it had doubled in size , that is why they called us in on Monday , they then sent her for an cat scan and it showed it was still the same size as march this year ,when we asked how come , we were told it had doubled in size since march 2016 till 2018 but now was stopped growing since , and the person who read the ultra sound had made a mistake reading the results , so now we have to go back on the 20 th November and have an M R I . so just getting over the first fright , now we have to go through another month of worrying till 20 th November . when we have to have the M R I . life is just no good at the moment for us .
,, kel ,,

That is the worst part...the wait to get a visit to the specialist.
Best wishes for both of you.
