Title: getting proofs out of capsules
Post by: Mister T on June 03, 2018, 06:25:00 PM
I recently got a proof 20c piece that's in a different capsule to the usual proof set ones that come apart easily (maybe it's from a baby set?). Anyone dealt with these and have any tips on opening them without destroying them or the coin? I've tried unscrewing (but I don't see a thread anyway) and prying with my finger nails but it just doesn't want to open.

Force a thin blade into the centre of the edge of the coin.   It is most probably a top and bottom that snap together.

When opening/handling proofs always use clean cotton gloves with a soft clean cotton cloth on the desk and for gods sake don't breath on the coin.
A PR69-PR70 coin can be turned into a PR65-PR66 coin in a heartbeat if you are not careful with them.

Thanks for the advice - I'll try getting a knife to pop it open.

i use a scalpel to open them up , as i find the thin blade does the job better
