Title: Fiji cops it again
Post by: JeffH on April 10, 2018, 01:07:26 PM
Fiji is the quintessential tropical paradise but there is a down side....

In February 2016 tropical cyclone Winston devastated Fiji. At the end of 2016 we hired a 4WD and drove up the east coast of Viti Levu (the biggest island) and saw how terrible the damage was.

We stayed overnight there in one of the few restored rooms in another block. One of those concrete block wings actually had about a 10° tilt.

Last week cyclone Josie (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-02/tropical-cyclone-josie-hits-fiji/9610000) dumped on Fiji causing widespread flooding and damage, still ongoing. Right now  (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-02/tropical-cyclone-josie-hits-fiji/9610000)cyclone Keni  (https://www.radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/354632/cyclone-keni-expected-to-intensify-on-approach-to-fiji)is passing with even more destruction being wreaked.

P.S. I sat out a cyclone (category 3) on one of the outer Fiji islands once. Exciting...Yes. Fun...No. And boring after a couple of days when we ran out of reading matter, playing cards and Yahtzee. At least we still had a stock of beer and duty free drinks. Ventured out once a day to get fresh milk (and bread if was delivered). Actually, leaning into the gale with arms outspread and seeing how close to the ground you could get, supported by the wind, was a little bit fun but novelty value wore off rather quickly; especially after a near miss from a coconut palm frond -you would know it if one of those skittled you!

It sure is devastating. I hope they are rebuilding with more cyclone proof constructions.
My wife and I went on a cruise to Fiji a couple of years ago, just after a cyclone had hid.
The place was in ruins.  :(
