Title: Anvil or Hammer Die?
Post by: Nevol on February 27, 2018, 11:39:11 AM
Anvil or Hammer Die?

Does anyone know which die is which in relation to Australian Decimal Coins?

If you do know for certain, would you please advise the source of the info in your reply.

If this info can be reliably quoted, I'll insert it at the beginning of my "Decimal Upsets" thread.

I've got a rather vague recollection that the Anvil die is not capable of rotating so if that's correct, the hammer die is the only one that would rotate, but it's also possible that it was a dream (or hallucination). :s

Just have a look at ram strike errors, they should highlight which is the hammer die by which way the lip extends

That method will only work IF you know what the hammer die is, Obverse or Reverse.

The lip on the coin will give you that though, hammer die is above, strikes the coin down, a bit gets caught on the collar as its forced in hence the lip will always exist on the hammer side of the coin not the anvil side.

To quote p17 of Renniks Australian Pre-Decimal & Decimal Coin Errors 1st Edition.

(Discussion of die caps)

"In most cases it is normal that the Anvil is the Obverse Die and the Hammer is the Reverse Die."
