Title: THE GHAN
Post by: interest on January 14, 2018, 11:20:02 PM
Anybody interested in trains will certainly get a kick out of SBS THE GHAN.
A three hour spectacular leaving Adelaide & arriving in Darwin 54 hours later.
I thought I would catch the first ten minutes to see whats it's like three hours later still watching

I got as far as Port Augusta and started dozing off.   Some good historical info put up along the way though

Yep...I watched the whole 3 hour show and enjoyed it.

They also had a 17 hour tracing the whole trip (except nights) but thought that would be a bit long to watch.

I saw that as well, and very enjoyable it was. Sure was a different way of doing a doco, but affective, and gave a good account of what to expect IMO. So much so that I feel I've experienced the trip now and have saved ten grand....hmmmmm, but the club car experience can't be had on the big screen so looks like the Johanna is pushed further back in the list of priorities damnit. Heh, Darwin station was interesting the way it's stuck out in the sticks, couldn't help but think if a bloke stepped off the train in the middle of the monsoon, he'd be a chance of being whisked off by a croc!!

Award for best dialogue in a show has got to go to:
"I reckon we're gonna be about 5 minutes late Mick."
"Yeah, I reckon you might be right."

Mark and I watched this, missed the start but it was strangely riveting and we saw the whole thing. I was repeated, an extended version and we also missed the start. It certainly made us check the website for the cost of the trip. Jeepers. Best just watch it on TV.

Love train travel. Done many sleepers in Europe. But this is not cheap. >$2k for 4 days that's out of my price range!

Is the wind farm really the most noteworthy thing about Snowtown?

I think the residents hope that this is now the case KC.

You could drive from Darwin to Adelaide for considerably less that 2K a pop sleeping at nice hotels at night and you would see Sooooo much more along the way.
Trains and busses are Not my favourite means of travel But each to their own.

Don't know why they have wind farms anyway.

It's so damn windy up here today, sure as hell don't need no more wind!

It's more relaxing on a train then having to drive yourself.

Sleeper trains are great (esp in Europe). You hop on in the evening and wake up in another city. Train stations are usually at the centre of town unlike airports. So you don't have to travel out to catch it and go through security checks. Trains is best way to maximise sightseeing times during the day. And they are quite comfortable with flat bed and often comes with breakfast. You also save yourself a night of hotel $.

I heard the Snowtown residents tried to rename it to Rosetown. Looks like the new name did not stick.
