Wait a sec ... i'm Heading down on Australia Day.

I usually press three coins (one for me, one for each of the kids).
$9 was highway robbery enough.

Am I now up for 5 x 3 x $3?

Anyone been yet? Are the cardboard sleeves mounted sequentially in the hopper?
This will cause massive delays.
I'm so confused.

I guess reading that article the other day about the mint basically making more from numismatics than currency, makes me think the collector will just be squeezed, and squeezed again

That was fairly self-evident. Because it costs 7c to make a 5c coin (http://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/why-do-we-still-have-5-cent-pieces-and-what-can-you-do-with-them-20151109-gkua1w.html), and they make millions of 5c coins each year, it really shouldn't be a surprise that they make more from numismatics than from currency. Currency is a loss-making exercise, whereas numismatics is a profit-making exercise. :ok:

More importantly, so this Celebration proof set is the only way to get a 2018 MOR $1 in proof right? The regular 2018 6 coin proof set has the Armistice Centenary $1 coin.

Has anyone been to the RAM as yet and done there own MYO coins?

If so, can you advise that the five different folders that hold a single coin, are dispatched randomly from the presses or does one go to the shop to secure the set of five folders.

Thanks in advance.

I'll be able to report back in 3 weeks, but this was on the Mints Facebook page.
No signage about it that I can see, so I reckon the cardboard sleeves will be alternating in the hopper.

I was there on Jan 1st Goldseeker and avoided the huge lineup mainly due to the 100 ballot being filled at 7:10am and I was 15 minutes too late so just went shopping elsewhere and got back to RAM around lunchtime
The different folders are dispatched in sequence so as long as you pressed 5 coins consecutively 5 different folders was guaranteed
Biggest problem early on they only allowed 2 per line up , the first press played up all day which required an attendant inside the cage and the best thing was RAM provided staff to pick up the despatched coin in cotton gloves then place in folder I preferred to keep virgin folder and place coin in a 2x2
Great quality coins and theme this year

I reckon it won't be. The sleeves will be printed in batches so you will get the same sleeve all from the same batch.

They will offer to sell coins in the different sleeves to you on their website. :)

Or if you can ask at the Mint shop for the various sleeves:

"Hi, can I get one each of the mint your own sleeves?"
"Sorry, two dealers came through on January 1st and asked for 500,000 each, which depleted stock. You might want to check secondary markets to see if you can purchase one from there."

Maybe they see it as an investment opportunity. Buy a $60 coin for your kid right now, and they'll sell it for $600 in 10 or 15 years time. Then that's $540 you don't have to spend on them in the future, when they want to buy a car or go to uni. :winkextra:

Yeah, I suppose. Though maybe they should buy their kid a copy The Barefoot Investor, rather than a coin. ;)

I literally just bought a 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Silver Proof $5 coin.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2006-5-Melb-Commonwealth-Games-Queens-Baton-Relay-Silver-Proof-Coin/231288781687?hash=item35d9e2bb77:g:yRgAAOSwQItTzeKQ

Original price of issue (2006): $68.50
Price just paid (2018): $26.96    (Buy it Now of $29.95, with an ebay 10% dicount [new10])

Yes, the mintage is twice what the new coin is (5,000 vs 9,100), but there is also triple the silver content in the 2006 coin (11.66g vs 36.31g).

These newer coins seem like they'll be an even poorer investment than the older ones!!

Title: RE: new coins for 2018
Post by: Hercules on January 04, 2018, 08:15:02 AM
It's a money-making scheme. Some collectors just have to have every different kind of official packaging a coin was sold in. Having all five with different original packaging ought to attract a premium over having all five with the same packaging, but as far as I'm concerned, this is just the mint trying to get us all to pay five times for the same coin. This doesn't bother me, however, because it's helping to subsidise this year's 5c production run. The more money they make from collector's items, the less they'll feel the need to cull the 5c coin, which will mean more 5c noodling for many years to come. :ok:

So this is going to go from looking at mintage figures to work out which coins are rare to working out which packaging is rare.

I sent an email to the RAM re the cards/folders for the MYO coins and this is there response:

There are five cards for the 2018 Gallery Press coin with each representing different characters. The characters are Ann Mash, Esther Abrahams Johnston, James 'Durramboi' Davis, Alexander Pearce and John Boyle O'Reilly.

Please note that the cards are packed into the machine at random so there is no way we can guarantee a particular character will be available on a specific date. However, all characters have been released and are available throughout 2018.

Kind Regards

Customer Service Team
Royal Australian Mint

So it would appear that if you want all five cards/folders, one could spend a lot of money over and above the cost of five MYO coins to secure a full set of cards/folders.

Hmm, shall I continue:   That is THE question?

Probably cheaper to buy them on ebay. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) they are going for $8 each and you can select the characters you want. Some dealers have hundreds of them.

That's worse than what they did with the Rio Olympics. They had five different folders for those as well, which were randomly distributed, but at least if you went to Woollies or the Ekka, you could get whichever ones you were missing. So now we've gone from buying coins exactly 5 times to buying them 10+ times just to get one of each different type of packaging. :( Does Greg have any plans to include packaging figures in the next edition of Maccas?   (Poor guy. I just feel so sorry for him having to keep track of this as well.)

This hobby is becoming too expensive, especially when the Mint is issuing what seems like over 100 coins a year. I wonder how many 2018 coins will be released this year to commemorate the 100 year anniversary since WWI ended. November will be a busy month. Also in March or April we are expecting 3 different $2 coins for the Commonwealth Games which will no doubt come through Woolworths again. I'm thinking I might just go back to collecting circulated coins and only buy NCLT if it is something that interests me.

When I was younger, I used to equate "rare" with "scarce", so maybe that's what they've done here. These coins are scarce in circulation, which is why the seller's listed them as "rare". However, I do agree that anyone who is that much into coins to sell them on eBay ought to know that these coins are very common outside of circulation, so they are certainly not "rare" or "scarce" overall. Just my $2. :winkextra:

This particular seller.. I've had a bad experience with him/her, not so much because I got ripped off by their 'rare' and 'scarce' coins, but rather he/she openly takes photos from my listings and took it as their own. Even the listing description was a rip off mine.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rare-2017-2-Two-Dollars-Lest-We-Forget-ANZAC-Coloured-Coin-UNC/253143580768

The first photo on the above listing was taken by myself when I used to sell that coin at a fraction of his/her current prices to help fund my hobby. He/She blatantly ripped it off as their own and despite repeated messages to get it off, does not reply and simply cropped the photo to make it seem 'different' from the original. Really makes me fume thinking about it and I thought I'd finally got over it. But when I clicked on runway's link, it just triggered me off once again.

In case anyone was wondering, I have reported him to eBay, but clearly the process of filing for infringement of copyright is too tedious and you're supposed to have a company holding the rights etc. which you must have proof of. I simply gave up.

Here's the original featuring my bedsheets  :dodgy:  I took a lot of effort to even get this photo because the colours don't show up very well. To have it ripped off me just made me really upset.

Gee rolly that's BS :@ Ever thought about putting a watermark on like some sellers do now. Here's a listing that our lovely PP has up https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SAFLIPS-2x2-Coin-Holder-50pk-PVC-FREE-Saflip-With-50-Card-Inserts/202133673495?hash=item2f101b1617:g:U5EAAOSwNSxVQGX4  and as you can see the water mark in the middle bit doesn't really take away from the pic, but it's a total joke that things have gotten that bad that you have to do all this extra work to protect something as simple as a bloody photo because some low life arsehole will rip it off and use it so yes it makes me mad and I don't even sell :dash1:

The only way ebay will do anything is if you watermark your photo and that way ebay will remove the listing because you have proof it is your photo.

Yes, I've started having to use watermarks because of this particular seller. Glad to hear that eBay responds to watermarks. The last time I made a complaint, even though I provided copies of the originals which had details of when it was taken and the camera itself, they still refused to process the complaint unless I registered a copyright claim or something. It was just far too much of a hassle for someone who sells for fun.

May be he bought two himself to make himself look like a popular seller. If other people have bought from him, then it must be good.

Yeah people should do their research. He does have good ratings though.

His 2017 $2 listing comes up as a Sponsored Listing for me. Did he pay up for that in the search results? That's his business model - pay for more prominent listing to get hits and charging more.

Its a scam, they list at a cheap price ,sell a couple, then up the BIN price but the number sold stays there.Obviously to give the impression they are selling.
There were complaints to Ebay about this a couple of years ago and it looks like they still haven't upgraded the software. If they have stopped it he's purchased a couple himself with an alternate Acct. as burley.

I've had the exact same problem with another seller on ebay who are actually a bricks and mortar dealer, not with coins but militaria they stole a photo of mine then watermarked it as their own! No matter how many messages I sent them they would never respond and even ebay didn't care.

ENOOOOUUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at the Royal Australia Mint less than a week ago. Added more to my collection and pressed some coins. Bought some stuff, even though I have spent a fortune via eshop on those stupid Ratbag and Rascals coins.

Today, the RAM has released even more coins.
Winter Olympics? Come-on guys.
MORE Commonwealth games coins? Seriously??!? That horse isn't dead yet?
WMF coins? They don't usually don't go through the RAM shop. Sales targets must be high this year.

Can you stop already??!?!?
It's only just ticked over to February.

We've still got the end of WWI to get through. I can only imagine how many tribute special coins will be released throughout the year, then even more come 11th November

Pressed some convict dollars last week at the RAM. I now there had been some talk of 5 unique sleeves and such, but my only interest was in getting two coins from each press, so I didn't take much notice of the sleeves apart from the Rascals and Ratbags heading.

Arrived home yesterday and was sorting the coins when I noticed one of the cards had the name of Ann Mash on the bottom   Back in the eighties my Father got the genealogy bug and traced our families first arrival to a lady by the name of Ann Mash on the second fleet. I have since read more of her story in a Coinworks offering which highlighted one of her promissory notes.

The old Man would be chuffed.

Rascals and Ratbags indeed, love it  :yahoo:

RAM released a number of products today.

Note: Today (Friday 1st June) is the LAST day you can buy the $10 swap bags of the $2 coloured coins. You can also only get them via the phone. The website has them as "Temporarily Unavailable".

Speaking of things only available over the phone.
https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/30th-Anniversary-of-the-2-Coin/10069.aspx
There has been a 30th anniversary of the $2 coin, 3-coin proof set released. Mintage set at 1,988. This has also gone "Temporarily Unavailable", so you need to phone through the RAM's customer service number to order it. It is capped to 1 set per order.
They phone operators have said they are VERY popular.

Get in quick kids.

I was speaking to the customer service people multiple times today.

They said exactly what the website said.

They allowed phone orders today, as it was a late decision.

It's annoying. In this day and age, to be needing to phone a company to make an order, rather than use a website.

The three coin set is now listed as "Sold Out" now! :O

There is also a 12 coin set

https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/30th-Anniversary-of-the-2-Coin/10094.aspx

2018 $2 Twelve Coin Coloured Uncirculated Set

On the 30th anniversary of Australia's two dollar coin, this 12 coin set is a nostalgic recollection of twelve of the designs the coin has portrayed over the past three decades.

As a true celebration of this coin's place in Australian history, it features three of the standard coin design acknowledging our nation's indigenous population (each with its own unique obverse design). It also acknowledges our nation's shared stories, with Lest We Forget and Remembrance Day coins from recent years, and the 2013 coin celebrating Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's 60th anniversary on the throne.

Each coin is a tribute to the Royal Australian Mint's creativity and manufacturing excellence, with eight featuring our colour-printing technology.

Licensed coins can't be included as the agreements have expired for new productions.

Think of it like some music in video games. They have to stop selling it as the licence agreement expires, but those already made and sold under the original agreement can continue to be used.

According to the pics I've seen, none of the coins have the "HH" initials on them. Furthermore, all of the coins are dated "2018", so 10 of the 12 coins are unique.

Here's a picture of the front and back of the set, courtesy of Downies:

As you can see, all of the coins have one of these 3 obverses:

Hence, the only non-unique coins are the Standard $2 with the IRB effigy and the coloured ANZAC $2 with the Eternal Flame.

The wording on the booklet is not shy about mentioning colour printing technology, and the wording on their website leaves no doubt as to what they think of the Canadian Mint and their claims:

Online Coins Lismore (https://www.onlinecoinsandcollectables.com.au/collections/coloured-2-coins/products/2018-ram-30th-anniversary-of-the-2-coin-2-twelve-coin-uncirculated-set)
eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_ftrt=901&LH_PrefLoc=1&_udlo=65&_sadis=15&_udhi=70&_stpos=2852&_dmd=1&LH_BIN=1&_ipg=200&_ftrv=1&_from=R40&_nkw=30th+anniversary&_sacat=3372&_sop=15)

Thanks for the heads up with the Lismore store.

Just went shopping and saved a bundle.

The Anzac rolls were the cheapest I've seen. https://www.onlinecoinsandcollectables.com.au/products/the-spirit-lives-anzac-2014-2018-1-official-circulating-rolled-coin-set

Also, if buying before tomorrow night, used the discount code FLASH for free shipping.

Cheers,
