Title: 2012 $2 Coloured Poppy
Post by: Triggersmob on December 06, 2017, 08:20:48 PM
Anyone have one of these coins going cheap please?
I need one for a trading partner overseas.
Doesn't have to be perfect.

Cheers

Gee, the prices for these little fellers have exploded of late.

UNC coins pushing up to $40 a pop or better and quite a few of the PNCs have gone for $70+.

I recently bought  few more of these and realised that the orientation of the red poppy when printed one the coin is not standardised. Is this something that has been discussed before?

There was 3 releases of these, PNC C mm, RSL no mm and carded C mm

Sorry what I meant was the rotation of the red poppy on the coin itself. It doesn't seem to be standardized. These were noted on the RSL carded coins. Not sure about the mintmarked ones.

Any chance you can post a couple/some piccies side by side detailing the differences so we know what to look for?

Here are photos of 6 coins that I have. I've placed a black line going across the horizontal midline of each coin (am aware some coins are upside down - but shouldn't affect the rotation) and you can take a look at the orientation of the poppy's petals relative to that. The flowers appear to be rotated at random and are also not printed exactly centre as well.

Thanks rolly, I see what you mean.

I'll have to dig my coins out to see if they display the same features, but not too sure where they are just at present.  :scratch_one-s_head:

Perhaps since they came from the RSL they had the bingo peoples apply them with blotters.  :winkextra:

If the Canadian Mint wins this court case,
We are going to have to hand all of these 2012 Poppy coins back to the RAMint to be destroyed.

I can't see if there has been a resolution yet.

Court case  (http://nationalpost.com/news/canada/royal-canadian-mint-sues-royal-australian-mint-in-row-over-printing-of-red-poppies)

I don't have any, & I'm sure nobody here has any either.

As there is no poppy under the colour, like on the non coloured ones,
I guess there is no reason for the mint to align the coins before pad
printing them .

I think you're probably right on the money with that explanation Steve.

More coins the Canadian Mint is unhappy about.
This time it's Possum Magic

Also the Remembrance Day coins, the Olympic coins, well, basically all the coloured $2 released by the RAM in the last couple of years.

I wonder if the RCM are going to sue all the mints from 'other; countries that now have coloured coins. Eg. USA, UK Royal Mint, China to name just a few.

Interesting to see how the Red Poppy $2 has now reached more demand than the Purple $2

Yep. The red poppy $2 is still climbing in price (well on the way to doubling the average sale value for last year) while the purple $2 is showing modest growth in 2018. The red poppy PNC is also going very strongly.
