My own searching has slowed right down. Other things have taken priority.
It used to be an alnost daily activity, but has slowed to a few times a month.

si I am happy with them .
I am still doing as much as the local CBA branch can supply. Around $1500 per week, on average, of 20¢, 50¢ and $1 coins. I have given up noodling $2 coins as finds are so sparse. That is the only Bank branch in town. I have to mark the bags I return otherwise they will give me ones I have already noodled.
Luckily the teller that usually serves me is interest in coin collecting and understands what I am doing -however every silver lining has a cloud; I will never get a round 50¢ from her!
If I go to Mudgee (the nearest town of any size) I will hit the change machines in the foyer of the new CBA branch but that would not be more than once a month.
I haven't noodled since Nov/Dec 2016.
The banks around my way don't like me asking for loose coin and I can't be bothered with the change machine in the walls of the banks.
Even the clubs with poker machines and loose coins have declined me exchanging dollars for dollars.
I only get to look at coins that come through my hands.
The change machines are excellent. I highly recommend them. I haven't done much noodling recently, because I've been trying to save my money for other things, but I'm hoping to ramp it up again over the next few weeks and months. I certainly don't want to wait for them all to appear in change, because that will take forever. At least with noodling, I have a reasonable chance of finding them while I'm still young. :winkextra:
Been nearly 2 months since my last noodle. Have the DT's but with a few other things going on at the moment (I think it would help if Christmas was re-positioned to some other part of the year!) it's looking like the next one could be a New Year project. :-/

Hi Hercules, nice list and I compared that with my book listing of die varieties in decimal to see if I had anything obvious missing, up to year 2010. I also have quietly noodled any thing that comes my way and the list is a heads up to educate me further. Funny thing, I have never seen a coloured dollar coin in my hand of any sort. I wonder if people just grab them from circulation hoping they will be worth something?
In the list there are just a couple of things that puzzle me, not being up with this new fangled decimal stuff:
1/ the 1994 50c, I thought the narrow date version was the scarcest?
2/ the 2014 50c "bubble", ok be easy with me, but what the hell is a "bubble"?

1) The 1994 narrow date 50c is the more usual coin in circulation with the wide date being rarer but still found in reasonable numbers. However, the opposite is true for the 1994 Year of the Family 50c PNC. In that case the wide date is the norm and the narrow date is the exception (and the latter seems to be reasonably scarce in the PNC).
2) Here are a few examples of "bubbles". Quite a few have appeared in more recent years on 20c and 50c coins.

:beg: Forgive me as it's been well over 12 month since my last noodle.. had withdrawals a few time :( but like many others just had way too much going on but will get back to it again one day.
Yes there's quite a few bubble coins, 2010 and 2012 20 cent and then quite a few different years and positions on the 50 cent and the crop circle behind the emu is probably the biggest one as it's double the size of the others.
Other rotation/upsets are found on 10 and 20 cents like the 2001 20 cent as I've found two of them and there's also things like 2008 20 cent missing claw, fat letters on the 2000 50 cent, gap year 20 cents as well so there's a few things to look for.
Re the "bubble", aha, thanks guys being an old school type I would have called them a "barnacle" !
Looks like pieces fracturing off the die faces thus the lump or bubble in the face of the coin.
I guess it shows up more on the later date coins as a consequence of the higher impact loadings on the dies at modern coining speeds and also the harder surface treatment of the dies to give the long life needed. In essence you would have little bits fracturing off the dies long before any major wear or buckling so no need to replace the die. In the olden days the dies would be wearing and mushrooming if a bit soft or just fracturing with a big crack long before they had too many little bits fracturing off. I do see the odd pre-decimal with a bubble but usually its a big clunk from the press and hey presto another big error coin!

Bubbles can appear on many different die combinations, but these are the ones I always look out for:
2010 Standard 20c: Bubble above the platypus
Most of these were released in Brisbane, but have since been hoarded out of circulation. I've only found 9 so far, which equates to about 1.6% of standard 20c coins dated 2010, but this is probably an overestimate due to the fact that I live in Brisbane.

I did that with Ian McConnelly and even sent him coins as well as photo's but nothing ever got done so it put me right off doing anything like that again. Anyone is quite welcome to look at threads like noodling finds or any of my previous posts or threads as I've posted a lot of pic's and descriptions over the years.
I suppose the thing is "bubble" a bad descriptive word, a bubble is a globe of..stuff.....filled with something like air.
On all the coins we are looking at here , we have circular shaped incuse defects on a die face and somebody has coined the word bubble trying to categorise the phenomena with a easy word. That sort of defect is just a metal problem that nobody had a popular word for before because nobody cared as it is a production problem with no scientific or investigative merit. . I like "bubble" actually myself from the catchy point of view for an article heading! . I think the more you look the more you will find now especially as every body has a USB microscope and what you used to squint at in a x10 glass you can now scan with a x100 scope onto a 21" screen! Is it worth an article by itself? yeah sort of. A lot of my articles are a bit of froth and bubble (!) as well as the dead serious ones. The problem with offering such an article is you are then accused of writing about rubbish topics in the numismatic world. Well I can write rubbish. I'll put it on the "To think about " list after the more dead serious miss strikes/overdates/die varieties and Xmas.

I think the name "bubble" comes from the fact that it was first noticed above the platypus's claw on the Standard 2010 20c, where it looked like an air bubble caused by the platypus's swimming. Later, it was noticed on other coins like the Standard 2012 & 2014 50c, where the name "bubble" was reused in order to simplify discussions with those who were familiar with the one on the Standard 2010 20c. Thus, the name "bubble" has been lifted from its original context of being a small, circular defect beside the platypus to being a small, circular defect in any location on any coin. :ok:

Goatieman23: Not sure on it's name, but "the Bubble" sounds good. It is what I believe is a die variety. Think of the 2004 Pointy A variety, McDonalds called it a big head rather than a point A, but pointy A is the name that has stuck over the big head.
Larena: haha Goatieman23.....I did think very carefully about what to call it...the first one I sold I just called it a 'circle cud'...but then I thought 'that just doesn't do it justice' , so I put my creative mind to work and decided in the context of the 'whole design' , it should be called a 'bubble'...so the '2010 bubble' was born. Will be very interesting to see how many are out there, so hop to it everyone....the chase is on !

Are these true rotations? Most 1966 10c coins are rotated slightly, but I don't consider this to be a defect. Anything less than 15° is normal on this particular coin, anything between 15° and 30° is borderline, and anything more than 30° is cause for celebration. :winkextra:

I try different banks all the time. I now have a list of banks where the actual tellers collect coins so I avoid those as I know I won't be getting anything of value there.

As promised, I'm home from work and checked the 2 '66 10 cent coins. If I'm right ( big IF) and I went off what Downies have a picture of on their site, CW rotation, I am holding in my hot little hand, a 300 approx. degree and a 350-355 approx degree rotation.

Please don't take it personally. My background is in maths and science, so my natural instinct is to be sceptical of anything that sounds too good to be true, but once I get to know you better, that wariness will disappear. So far, I've noodled over a hundred 1966 10c coins, but not one of them has been rotated by more than a few degrees, so I know the probability of finding two rotated ones within a single batch must be extremely low, which is why I think you might have made a mistake, and am asking you for further verification. Please don't think that I have anything against you. I'm just doing what I've been trained to do from many years of study.

I had forgotten about the rotated 66 10 cents, as you point out is well documented with a simple web search, and i'm an old timer who should know better! Now I have to drag out all the decimal coins I have collected in shoe boxes over the years and go through the 10cents just in case. Don't worry about statistical methods indicating whether its likely to find something or not, I was handed a 1916 shilling in my change some years ago while shopping and to me that was not a "million to 1" thing but a 100% find! Just keep looking for the 100% things like 2000 $1 mules, missstrikes and odd die combinations that are floating in the pond waiting for a finder. Be one of the finders, ignore the statistics and keepi the 100% theory!

Thanks Fred, it really is an enjoyable hobby. Since I'm only learning, I tend to look at ebay to see what people are posting in the way of errors and varieties. If I see something that strikes an interest, I then smash into downies or TDK APDC , or even the RAM sites. There is so much info out there that if you think outside the box a little bit you can kick some goals.
Today I was given a 2015 10 cent singapore coin in a bag of 5 cents. Also found an 1878 half penny in a tin of mixed stuff in an antique store. Not in great condition but pretty good for a coin 139 years old.

This noodler is going well this morning. Just did a batch of $1 coins and two bundles (five x $20 bags) did not have one Mob of Roos coin. One bag was only 2002 Outback coins.
And some very nice condition ones in there.
Definitely not a random assortment! Should happen more often I think.

Good result with the 1966 10¢. I have found a few upsets -mainly 2001 $1 and 2010 50¢- but never a 10¢. I have about $150 of 10¢ to go through in the next few days so, maybe this time? The best upset I've found is a 2001 20¢.

I was in Beechworth the week before last and shared some red wine but it was some I took with me from interstate. I will check out the local IGA and see if they have the Cecchanti.
Happened to stop into a shopping centre on Friday with a change machine. Couldn't walk by without weighing myself down with as many rolls as I could carry. Got straight into noodling through and managed my very first partial collar 5c. It's probably the most serious error I've ever found noodling, I only seem to find NCLT, rim cuds and small planchet flaws.

I am a sucker for change machines. Was in Mudgee Friday and wife wanted to go to Coles. I left her there and walked to CBA, two minutes away, which has a change dispenser. Card in hand I went to adjacent ATM to grab some notes for the change machine and saw "Out of Service"!
"Never mind" I thought, "there is an ATM outside the door that I just walked past and someone was using it so it is good to go." I just happened to glance at the change machine as I turned around and twigged why the long queue (almost out into the street); "Out of Service" too.
So no stock of rolls for me this long weekend. :fie:

Although it's been some years since I did any serious noodling, I encourage everyone to really consider noodling some 5 Cents. I recommend using at least a 10x Loupe, even if your eyesight is 20/20. Examining the edge is the crucial bit to identifying a 'collar' error.

1985 & 1986 5c were mint set only issues so you will be fortunate to find one of them noodling although very occasionally mint set only coins do turn up in change.

Have also found ebay a useful tool. I see what people are selling and then research the hell out of it. I think I got lucky today.
I went through some 20c pieces and 5c pieces.
Nothing interesting from the 20c pieces (plenty of 2017 though), but there was a 1975 New Zealand.
I got two 2016 50 years of Decimal Currency 5c pieces (very unexpected), 1987, 1989, 1994 and 1995 New Zealand 5c pieces and only one 2017.
Two ramsheads last two days (one aUNC) and several Tall Ships (two at aUNC) plus a reasonable number of Centenary of Federation (mostly well worn) from $400 of 50¢ coins.

I haven't heard of anyone finding an 85 and 86 5c noodling ever and I know people who noodle these by the tens of thousands every week

I went through some 5c pieces and 50c pieces.
Nothing in the 50c pieces, a New Zealand 5c piece and that was about it from what I've looked at.
Had a good haul recently - I got $12 worth of 5c pieces, $48 worth of 20c pieces and $60 worth of $1 coins and found:
1x 1972 5c
1x 1966 20c (EF+ but covered in something black)
1x 2001 Queensland 20c
1x 2001 New South Wales 20c
1x 2001 Australian Capital Territory 20c
1x 2001 Tasmania 20c
1x 1982 New Zealand 20c (EF+)
1x 2015 plain $1
Been a little while since I've got a 1975 5c piece and the Centenary of Federation haul made up for the zero I found in my last $48.
I just did $500 of $1 coins and found a few NCLT plus a rather crummy New Zealand $2 and not much else.
But one $100 bundle (5 x $20 bags) I think had been "pre-noodled" -one bag had 19 x mob of roos, another only 1 x MoR and the other three almost similar disparity between MoR and commemoratives. I don't know of another noodler locally but the bag was packed at the local branch. Could have just been someone with an accumulation checking them before cashing them in.
I always mark any bags I take back to avoid duplicate noodling of the same coins. Easy to happen with a branch in a small town.
I went through some 50c pieces - no 2017 at all but I got a Victoria and SA Centenary of Federation.
Just completed $1500 x $1 coins for 2 x changeover anniversary coins and 1 x NCLT, 50years of Television "C" Mint Mark.
Several 2017 $1 coins as well.
plenty of 2017 dollars up this way Bruce , the clubs have lots of them .
I had 1 x 2011 x 10 cents ,
a man that I was talking to told me his son was saving all his .10 cents for each year , but could not find a 2011 , it was the only one he did not have , and he wanted to buy it from me for his son .so I thought he was a new coin collector in the makings so I gave it to him to give to his son , his son rang me that night to thank me for the coin , but he could not talk he was so excited to get one , every time he tried to thank me he started to cry . I felt sad but happy at the same time .

Went through some 10c pieces looking for a 2017 - still nothing, but I got a 1996 New Zealand and a 1999 big head.
Went through two rounds of 20c pieces and got a 2001 NSW and a couple of Kiwis (1982 and another) in the first and a 2001 ACT and a 1980 Kiwi in the second.
Nothing really from some 50c pieces - a 1970 which I sent back.
Just finished searching through 1,500 x $1.00 coins for 3 x Possum Magic, (2 coins the same) and 1 x Barcelona Olympic Coins (Women In sport).
Not bad and more than pleased.
Another batch of 1300 coins for 1 x HMAS Sydney 11 "C" and I x 50 Years TV "C" again and 1 x rabbit ear.
Got a whisper that someone found a MULE earlier today.

Not sure if it is PMD as the main/large groove has the buildup of material at the top of the groove and the feel of the it is very smooth, no sharp edges.
Makes me think a possible strike through.

The reason this is not noticeable on the other grooves is that they are not as deep, therefore no buildup occurred.

They are not easy to find.
They are also definately getting harder to find over time.
Natural attrition (being lost/destroyed), being collected, and mostly being 'watered down' by large numbers of newly issued coin are all making it harder.

Yeah go for bulk.
In 19 years of looking at most coins that pass through my hands I've found two or three partial collars and two upsets, so finding something interesting is possible but not likely unless you're looking at huge volumes of coins.
As long as the error hasn't deformed the coin too much you should be able to find it in a roll - these days machines will filter out anything that isn't within shape and weight tolerances.

$100 in 20c coins is a good way to go.
When I started noodling, I mostly searched 5c coins looking for 1972 coins.
I liked 5c because you can get heaps of them without locking up too much money.
Make a list of the things you will be looking for, so you dont overlook something.
The chance of finding something interesting is fairly high.
The chance of finding something really interesting (like a collar error) is very small.
I think I have only found 1 partial collar error in about 7 years of looking at coins - both in use and getting coins to search.
Good luck with your searching and keep as up to date with how you go.

I went down to exchange 1500 x $1 coins at a previous hotel that would do it for me but got rejected today by the club manager. Hw would have gladly taken the coins and given me notes but when he tried to hand me the notes and I rwejected them politely asking for coins instead, the discussion was on. I left thsat club never ever to return.
Anyways, had to pass another old club that used to do it infrequently for me and they did that 1500 $1 coins today for me.
The sort yielded 3 x changeover $1 coins, Coat of Arms "M" Privy Mark, Anniversary of the Trans Australian Railway "C" mint mark and a 1989 NCLT Kangaroo coin. (Only for mint sets).
A new batch of coins and some nice keepers.

I regularly get $500 bags of $1 coins from the local bank -have "BC" marked on them -that is code for the local club. That would suggest that poker machine change actually builds to a surplus.
Big winners (the few) don't collect their payouts in coins and casual players will put their bar change in the machines on the way out to go home. So one would expect that coins actually build up. Or, have I got it wrong?
Last time I can remember putting money in one of those machines was nearly forty years ago. I read that you can now use a credit card to play; is that true?

Since several of my local Commonwealth Banks have now moved fro coin count machines to coin count machines with bins, I can no longer get the large loose plastic bag of $500 worth of $1 coins. Likewise the $0.50 and $0.20 bags.
I am told to go to the hole in the wall and deposit notes for rolled coijns.
Some joke that is.
My local bank told me to do that and the machine states that maximum amount of exchange is $1,000.
What crap, each time I have used these holes in the wall for rolled coin I can only get $180.00 rolled coins at a time.
People lining up behind me keep asking if I can make way. Sorry, I got here first and then more time when the rolls run out, one has to wait ages for a refill and start again.

To be honest Bruce the rolls are the better way to receive them
I don't mind the machines as I don't go for huge quantities but the 50c rolls have a real tendency to get jammed.

10 cent pieces don't have much to offer...
Plenty of small cuds on the reverse if you have good eyes (or a loupe) but not worth the bother. I declined politely.
I save up all our loose change and, when I have a container full go through them. Mostly look for 2011 10¢ but slim pickings with them.
After not going through anything for a while I looked through $80 worth of 50c pieces and found a 2001 Queensland, 2001 South Australia (don't see many of these) and a 1988 Bicentenary.

I try and grab a mixed bag of $500 from the Comm Bank over the weekend. Tend to look at the $2, $1, 50c and 20c as they have the commemoratives to find as well. Been getting a few Comm Games $2 and the odd $1 and very rarely the $1 2016 Dec Currency and picked up a $1 2018 Anzac last weekend. Kids think I'm nuts but it's a way to relax and I can feel like a King in my Parlour for a while. Trying to build up a few decent sets of 2001 Federation coins but in over 12 months only have 9 sets of 50c and 4 of the 20c.
Four sets of the 20¢ CoF coins is very good -hard to find enough of those to make even one set.

Finished 12 rolls of 20c pieces - found a 2004 big head (it's been a while) and amazingly a 1995 UN (possibly the first this decade? I find more 1972 5c pieces).
No Centenary of Federations though.
I have found three 1996 UN 20¢ in the last month but no 1972 5¢.
Picked up 2x$50 $2 coin rolls and 20x$20 $1 coin rolls from the bank. Found a 2012 Coronation (first i over 6 months) and a couple of comm games coins. Picked up a 1984-1994 10 Year $1 coin and a couple of nearly unc Anzacs. Also found this 2010 Rabbit. Not a good example but I'll keep noodling.
Michael noodled a $1 Commonwealth Games coin today.
I got a Borobi yesterday, but nothing else, from $500 of $2 coins.
And Leonard if you are doing $1 coins keep an eye out for rim cuds and 2008 cuds and combinations of cuds.

I know there are some not so old posts about the 2008 $1 variations but just can't find it at the moment. But there are double tail, blob on top of 1 and rabbit ears -and pretty well every combination of those. And I have found a reverse rim cud on the 2008 MoR too.
Just finished seven rolls of 5c pieces - nothing. Two 2017s was as good it got.
A 1972 5c, a changeover 5c, 2 changeover 20c, a 2001 state 50c and a 2017 ANZAC $1 were the highlights from my last noodling.

The 2008 Mob of Roos dollars are, relatively common but that year has quite a few different cuds. Some have multiple cuds and in different combinations. The double tail ones sometimes also have rabbit ears.

Went through seven rolls of 50c pieces. There wasn't much - a standard 2017 (don't seem too common) and a 1970 which don't come up all that often either.

Just finished another 1500 x $1 coins for 1 x Possum Magic and 1 x Changeover dollar.
I went through some 5c pieces and 20c pieces.
A 2017 and a 1987 New Zealand were the 5c highlights.
A Western Australia and two Bradmans were the 20c highlights.
In answer to the question....very well today.
I went to the bank yesterday for my usual noodling coins for the weekend and they were $100 short of spares for my request. The teller offered to make up the amount with 50¢ as they had taken a fair number that day.
Here is the result of a preliminary sort (below). A large proportion of high grade and twenty one CoF (seven different states and territories). I even scored a pre-1988 change bag -haven't seen one of those for years.

My neighbor called me over to the fence , and asked me about a coin he got in his change ,and he wanted to find out what it was , it was the dollar change over coin , he asked what it would be worth I offered him 5.00 dollars and he said he would keep it for a while and it was not for sale , I don't think he trust me with the value of it .

Apropos (lovely word that) my post yesterday I still had a $200 bag of 50¢ to noodle. Started on it a short while ago and looks like half are from the same source;
•very few commemoratives this time, but very nice ones,
•barely a coin later than 1985,
•mostly EF and up.
I still have to sort out the coat of arms by year but have already grabbed a 1985 at aUNC!

Just went through a $200 bag of Armaguard 50¢ rolls. Majority of pre-2000 dates with a lot of high grade commemoratives and a very large number of 1983 coat of arms.
Have over 50 "keepers", including three very nice ramsheads, some excellent Cooks and Silver Jubilees. Giving them a soak now and will probably discard some after a final inspection.
I do seem to be on a roll lately with 50¢ -32 x Centenary of Federation and 4 x ramsheads (plus a lot more of others) in a week!

I went through some 20c pieces - there was a Royal Wedding (which I see from time to time but don't hang on to) and two kiwis (1976 and 1987).
I went through some 5c pieces and found a 1999 New Zealand and from the six rolls I found six 2017 5c pieces so they're finally starting to become common.

Beautiful pic Nancy , I seem to be drifting away from coin collecting lately , reason being that I see so many of you members taking great pic,s of coins ,like the one above , and putting them on show here and on Facebook that I feel that I am the only one that can't take a reasonable photo to display any of my coins that I have to show , example of that is when I find or buy another coin that I want to show , I have trouble taking a good picture so I don't even try any more .

Maybe you could try setting up a process for taking photos so you get consistent results?
If you use the same camera, settings, lighting, background, position of coin and camera you should be able to work out what gives good results and just do the same each time.
Kel, you don't need any fancy camera either to get a reasonable pic.
Mine is just an $80 Fuji and I use it on fully auto, so no settings to mess around with.
I had a look but couldn't find Nancy's post with her cut down milk bottle setup. Hopefully it will come to light.
That would be a good start Kel; try to duplicate that.
The more light the better but it should be diffuse. Spotlight direct on a nice bright coin will just give you lots of reflections. That is the milk bottle secret -even out the light.
That is not necessarily inconsistent with lighting from one side to pick up detail.

Yeah I'm normally happy with the one or two I normally get (for some reason the 50c pieces are more common than the 20c pieces).

The Federation Coins are back in circulation again,to a degree,local Tab Shop owner collects all variety Oz. coins for me and i've had a steady supply for over a year now.Surprisingly many are close to Unc. so people have had them stored somewhere before spending.
Only problem is they are not worth much anymore as the feeding frenzy died out over 10 years ago,i've picked up many on Ebay for close to face with no one bidding.
Indeed and early year (commemoratives and coat of arms), in close to UNC, have been appearing a lot here recently. Some 20¢ and $1 coins, but not as many, too.
Must be quite a few people cashing in their hoards. The local bank keeps any sizeable coin deposits for me and often a large percentage of 'keepers' in them. I am now getting to the stage where I am actually discarding some coins that are only EF!
I went through another batch of 1500 x $1 coins yesterday for the following:
2 x Mini Rabbit Ears, 2017 and 2016.
1 x Eureka Stockade "E" Counterstamp;
1 x HMAS Sydney "S" Counterstamp;

The 20c pieces still seemed pricey but I guess they'll start dropping soon enough.

I've seen 3 different degree angles so far with the Parkes.
Went through some 50c pieces and found a 1975 Fiji 50c piece - it has been years since I've seen a Fijian 50c piece in change or a roll.
Only other interesting thing was a standard 2017. There were a few nice 1981 Royal Weddings and a nice 1982 but I let them go.

Have just checked all my albums and I now have 1 x Parkes upset in my used collection and now have a total of 8 spares.
I will get some more coins tonight so one will never know what will turn up.
Once I get my desktop up and running again, I shall post a scan of all the Parkes upsets.

Went through 12 rolls of 20c pieces and got a South Australia, a 1982 New Zealand and a nice 1981 3.5 claws. There were a couple of Canberra centenaries and Tax Office centenary as well but I sent them back.
From 6 rolls of 5c pieces I unexpectedly got a 2016 decimal currency anniversary but that was it from my initial look.

Hello Vlad! Welcome to the forum. Is that a $1 or $2 coin? Seems like a $1 from the milling pattern and the coin seems too thin to be a $2. If that's the case, it's probably the landcare coin and that's a pretty common coin to find in circulation. If it's a $2 coin, 1993 is a relatively low-mintage year and if you manage to peddle it off on ebay, you'll get a few cents in profit after paying the hefty fees haha.

It is a $1 coin, but I was asking about the circle close to the edge of the coin,
almost like a double rim on the mule, but further from the edge - smaller diameter.
Maybe it's not that visible on the photo but it's definitely there.

The ring that you are talking about appears quite often especially on 1984 and 1985 dollar coins.
I'd always put it down to a smaller diameter coin (like a 1c or 5c) sitting on them for a while. Possibly in a moist condition. I've always been going to do a test with some and put a 1c in beer then place it on top of a $1 coin for a week or so to see if it leaves a similar result. Just my theory at the moment.

Yeah I normally do 12 rolls at a time and am pretty happy with just one Centenary of Federation 20c.
I also went through five rolls of 5c pieces - there were two 2017s and the only thing I kept was a 1989 New Zealand.
I went through a roll of $1 coins (hoping for a 2019) but instead was surprised with my first 2016 decimal anniversary dollar.
Went through some 50c, 20c and 5c pieces.
Got two Mabo 50c pieces, a Northern Territory 20c, a 2004 New Zealand 20c (never seem to find the non-kiwi ones), a 2017 Victory Medal 20c (first newspaper coin - surprised it has taken this long) and a 1989 New Zealand 5c.
Second load of 1500 x $1 coins and found the following:
SHB "M" Counterstamp
Smithy "M" Mint mark
Water Conservation "M" Mint Mark
HMAS Sydney 11 "C" Mint Mark
2016, 2008 and 2000 Rabbit Ears.
Not too bad a haul for one lot of coins.

Not from change (though I assume they exist).
Based on the survey in the CAB whenever that was in the last few years they should account for 1 in 7 or so but I've looked at nearly double that. Anyway, I'm sure one will turn up sooner or later.
I've noodled two low echidnas and four high echidnas in the last three years. The only one I've ever received in change was a high echidna.

OK, I have joined the ranks of noodlers..as a Junior Noodler.
I dropped into the local CBA in Toongabbie and asked for $200 in $1 coins and $20 in 20c coins.
That's because I need cash for the paper shop and the bread shop, they have cash only signs showing, the rest take cards.
So the obliging young lady (they have fired all the old staff and closed down all but 2 of the windows in the bank) got the keys to the vault or something and walked back with a tray of plastic bags (just plain bags no firm marks).
At home I flicked out any shiny ones and then went through the rest looking for upsets/misstrikes/spews/whatever.
I kept nodding off but managed to get through the 300 coins. Nothing............... just dings and scratches.
Back to the shiny ones, about AUNC with lustre.

Hi Goldy, funny thing about mules, I found one back in 2005 and was so dumb I did not know what it was and nearly tossed it back into the ice cream tub of dollars and spent it. It just looked a bit strange to me as the rim was odd. Its aUNC grade with lustre. At that time we had an ice cream tub and used to throw all the 1 and 2 dollars into that for the milkman/papershop ect ect. Every now and then I would tip out the contents and keep the shiny ones....so dumb. A few years ago I was given a beaten up one in change at the supermarket when we still used cash, could not believe it. I guess there would be a few still out there. Nowadays apart from the bread and paper shop we just tap the smart card. We have to go to the bank if we want any cash, sign of the times eh?

I hardly use cash anymore. That's why I turned to noodling, because it took too long to find what I wanted in change. Most of the coins released before 2011 had relatively high mintages, so I was still able to find them in change, even if it took a few years. However, many of the coins released from 2011 onwards have very low mintages, so it simply isn't practical for me to wait for them to appear in change. Some examples - 2011 10c, 2011 $2, 2013 Coronation $2, 2014 MoR $1, 2015 ANZAC $1, 2015 ANZAC $2, 2016 Changeover $1.
Yes, I am having the same feeling of no luck mules. I haven't found one since 10 April 2015.
But I keep noodling and try and find the next surprise whatever that might be.
I have done 2 x lots of 1500 Dollar coins today for:
1 x 2016 Rabbit ear, (Large)
1 x 2010 Rabbit Ear/Spew Roo
1 x 2019 "U"
1 x 1996 Sir Henry Parkes Rotation
1 x 2019 "A".

What I need is 2019 "S" dollars but I have not picked up any of those 2019 issues despite noodling several $k in the last few weeks. I don't think any have exfiltrated the capital cities yet. In fact, it is quite a few years since any bank around here has received any of those little bags with uncirculated coins of any description -used to be relatively common once, albeit they were usually two or three years old.
Would I correct in assuming the "S" is harder to find than the others?
I do have some "A" and "U" but not from noodling.

Went through some 20c and 50c pieces.
Got a 2001 Qld 50c cent, as well as a 1991 and a 2000 Royal Visit.
From the 20c pieces the only keeper was a 2016 decimal currency (been a while since I last saw one).

I have a few banks and pokie places around where I am living but not all are co-operating.
To date this month, I have gone through 15,500 x $1 coins and a few days left to do some more.
To date this year, I have gone through 107, 922 x $1 coins, 3,803 x $0.50 pieces and 5,818 x $0.20 pieces.
To date since I first started noodling, I have looked at 2,683,058 x $1 coins, 532,473 x $0.50 coins and 82,613 x $0.20 coins.

Ok guys .. Probably a silly question but a friend in the UK has asked me how did we Aussies come up with the term "Noodling" to describe the process of sifting through hundred/thousands of circulation coins to find oddities/rareties etc?

I think it comes from Opal Miners who used to go through the mullock heaps after a big bang or being brought up from the mine shaft. To Noodle means to LOOK, SEARCH etc me thinks.

I went through some 5c, 20c and 50c pieces.
I added a few 5c pieces to last week's pile of years with known varieties for a closer look and found a 1987 high echidna when I when through them. It has taken a while.
In the 20c pieces I found a NSW, a couple of Taxation Office, a Royal Wedding and a couple of Canberra centenaries.
Only highlight from the 50 pieces was a 1988.
There were 2018s for each denomination as well.
Just finished searching 2,500 x $1 coins for the following:
1 x 1996 Sir Henry Parkes - Rotation;
1 x 2008 Kangaroo - Rabbit Ear;
2 x 2018 Commonwealth games - Swimming and Tennis;
1 x 2000 HMAS Sydney 11 - "C" Mint Mark;

Under a x4 and then a x10 microscope there appears to be no scuff/rub marks around the edge. It is a Kangaroo coin dollar.

I went through five rolls of 5c pieces and kept a 2000 New Zealand. There were plenty of 2017 and 2018 too.
I went through 10 rolls of 20c pieces and kept a 1967 New Zealand. There were a few 2018s in there as well.

Earlier this week I gave away two 2004 20¢ bigheads. Noodled $200 of 20¢ this morning and reaped three of those coins!

Seven rolls of 50c pieces gave a 2001 Victoria.
Three rolls of 5c pieces gave nothing.
11 rolls of 20c pieces gave a 2001 Queensland and an aUnc 1981 (Royal Australian Mint).
Not bad.
And another three tolls of 5c pieces gave nothing (except for a few fresh 2018s).
I got nothing from some 50c pieces (there were a couple of 2018 plains) and a 1986 New Zealand from some 20c pieces (there were a few 2018s and 2019s too).
At an ATM today I got quite a decent 1994 $20 note. I got another $20 out and it was a very nice 1995 $20 note. I got out another one again and it was a half decent 1994 again. I stopped at that point.
Went through some 5c pieces and got a 2016 anniversary but nothing else.
Went through some 20c pieces for nothing. Barely any commemoratives either.
Six rolls of 50c pieces (I normally go more but the machine jammed) yielded - a 2001 Qld and another 2000 incuse flag.

Could be better - not too much wear but a few stains on both sides.

From 12 rolls of 20c pieces I got a Queensland and two Northern Territorys, two UNs another nice 1981.
From five rolls of 50c pieces I got two 1970s and another Norfolk Island.

Good result. Much better than I have achieved -local bank has not had any coins this week that Have not already noodled.
I am starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms (pun intended). Alleviated slightly because i had to go to Mudgee on Friday and got five rolls each of 20¢, 50¢ and $1 from the change machine.
I can't get more as some of the staff know me and check my change withdrawals. After getting several hundred dollars of coins the first time I was reprimanded, twice by different staff members next two time I visited my local branch. Told to keep my withdrawals to a nominal sum, say around $100, as the machine is intended for commercial customers such as shops and pubs to use. [TRUE STORY]
There was an implied threat I would be in trouble if I ignored this advice. I am not sure what the trouble could be -is it possible for them to blacklist my card?
So living in a small town where everyone knows nearly everyone else has lots of advantages but not in this instance.
Gee that's pretty ordinary eh Jeff! (Not unexpected though ..... insert multiple spanish inquisition puns here). My anxiety disorder has enough trouble getting a bulk bag, but to suffer it from a dispenser would be met with ....... the unexpected.

I have found a 2007 Harbor Bridge $1 "S" mint mark.

I wasn't 100% sure if it was real because the inner rim seems to stop just between the 'H' in Elizabeth and the first 'I'. So do you think it's maybe slightly off centre? The reverse is in much the same condition and I found it yesterday in Lake Macquarie in NSW. The funny thing is it was only my third ever $500 bag that I searched because I was only looking for a 2019 'A' to complete my set. Now for the important question how much do you reckon it is worth? I must also say that I am only sixteen years old so I'll be happy with whatever price you tell me. Here is a photo of the reverse.

If you have a look at Ebay for recent mule sales you will get an idea of what the coin may be worth. Generally speaking the floor price is now about $350 for low grade coins. Even coins at around the same grade can go for quite varied prices depending on availability etc.

Got my 2nd 2019 time traveller (another "S"). 4 x 2018 MOR 2 x 2018 Anzacs, 2x2015 + 1x2010 Spew Roos. 2x2015 flat ears (backpack I guess), 1x1994 rabbit ears ...... I did note that there were no 2003 Volunteers nor Changeovers. Not too bad.

Found a copule of the "A" and "U" yesterday as well as a 2001 COF Upset at 348 degrees.

Just completed searching the 7,500 coins I have.
The result is a little dissapointing.
I found the following:
1 x previously reported above;
2 x $1 Mr. Squiggle coins - both issues;
1 x Smithy;
14 x "A", "U" and "S" Coins.
No rabbit ears or spew roos.
After a bit of a break I went through 12 rolls of 20c pieces. I found an aUnc 1981 (not Canada), a 2001 Bradman, a 2017 Military Cross and a 1976 New Zealand. Not bad.
That's a pretty good strike rate Mr T ! :good:

Mrs Uni banked her 5c tin the other day, it was a quite few years of keeping, around $130 in 5c, took me ages to noodle them before she did, I thought I would have checked most of them before the tin but managed to get 2 1972s so I was pretty happy.

I got to go through a family member's change tin and had some luck - from $125 of coins (mostly one and two dollar coins) I got a 2018 eternal flame $2, a 2014 remembrance $2, a 2012 non-coloured poppy $2, two 2019 A $1 coins, a 1998 rabbit ear $1 and a 1998C Howard Florey $1.

I got a 1994 and 1995 New Zealand 5c piece from 12 rolls, and nothing from two 20c rolls.
Yesterday I got a $500 sealed bag of $1 coins from the bank.
Today, seeing it was raining, I cancelled the lawn mowing and decided to noodle those coins instead. Thought the bag didn't feel quite right when I picked it up to open it. So I weighed it -3619g. That's 19g for the bag and 3600g for the coins -only $400.
Took it back and suggested it was short and please count it. Yes, only $400 so they swapped it for another bag.
The other bag was one banked by the same customer; bank puts a cryptic note on the bag so they know who banked an already sealed bag and that makes sure they don't give me back one of mine. I weighed that one and 4518g.
Bank teller said she would keep the bag for later so I assume a discrete word will be had.

From six rolls of 5c pieces I kept a 1989 New Zealand, a 1979 Fiji and two 2019 JC (for now). From two rolls of 20c pieces I kept a Bradman.
"Who's been eating my porridge noodling my coins" said father bear.
I purchased $200 of 50¢ coins, in $10 bags, the other day. Sat down to noodle them this morning;
•six bags had coins all facing the same way and every one a coat of arms revere,
•two bags same alignment but all commemoratives -ten each of two different dates,
•one bag only had 19 commemoratives of two dates,
•several other bags had 18 or 19 coat of arms.
I have done my usual "heads and tails" sort and will still look through them but I not expecting much in the way of keepers.
Reporting the result. Keepers are;
•1970 Cook VF-EF
•1981 Charles and Diana EF
•1988 Tall Ships VF
These came from the one $50 bundle that had the usual, random selection of years and mixed commemoratives.
I have put noodling on hold since last week. Part of our only venture out if absolutely necessary regime.
Instead sorting out what I have -plenty accumulated that I have said "must check /sort those sometime". Well it is now 'sometime'.
I gather, from other posts, several forum members are doing much the same.

Probably not the right topic but just the other day I picked up the first Jody Clark obverse coin in circulation that I have ever seen here in south east Queensland. Just a dollar and already too battered to consider keeping. I don't go out of my way to get bags of coins to search through but I check my change regularly and I get a fair bit because I pay cash for most things.
So where are they hiding?

What site are you using to load the picture Kel?
I find the forum gallery the easiest way (link at top of this page). The picture file should be less than 1MB and 1500 pixels on longest side. You computer will surely have one, if not several photo programs on it that allow you to shrink or compress the picture, if needs be.
i know the forum gallery is good for me to look at others pictures Jeff , other than that I have no idea ,how they work . I think this happened to me once before years ago and I had to go back through the files and delete some of my pictures , so I will try that again , all I do Jeff I take a pic with my camera then after I have a few then I plug my camera into my p/c then it tells me to import the pic over to the pc , so that is what I do with the camera , now with my scanner , I open the lid , place the item on the glass , close the lid then hit scan , it then scans the pic and that puts it over on to the same page that my pictures goes on to from my camera .
is the sig of J C the designer , is it the one with the older queen on it with the necklace hang down with the pendent on it hanging off the bottom , I want to go through my bottle of 5 cent pieces , and there many many of them to look at .

Kel, as Jeff said - if you save your photos to a gallery then you don't have to worry about the attachment limits. I had the same problem some time ago and have saved photos to a gallery since with no further issues. As you say to retrieve attachment space you have to delete some photos that you previously posted.

I have handled almost no coins (or banknotes) at all, let alone done any noodling.
One person left $11 in an envelope on the doorstep for a contact free pickup of an eBay item, but that is pretty much it for cash in the last month.
I wonder how many people staying at home will be sorting out change jars etc to drop off to the banks?
Maybe there will be some long hidden gems going back into circulation once things free up again?
With finances being so tight for so many people, at present, some "rainy day" stashes and jars of commemoratives might start being cashed in too.
I withdrew $300 in $1 coins for petty cash and went through them just looking for upsets or any mules!
My eyes are not good enough to look for those "spew roos" and other minor things.
Being a Bower Bird I put aside the shiny ones, about aUNC, and found:
2019, 5 roo, 1 jack and jill, 1 x cricket, 1 x thong.
2018, 5 roo, 2 x Anzac, 1 x gold coast.

Also I found 2 with lamination errors a 2005 and 1984.
The lamination faults were straight lines across the faces of the coins.
I do not have a catelog and could not be bothered looking at the Goverment coin acts but it seems the Mint is using any old dies from playtime design to put funny reverses on the coins?
No wonder i lost interest in decimal coins somewhere around Y2000!

Same here Fred,big culture shock for me was my prized collection of yearly Mint releases from the 1960's onwards that i sorted every year or so with pride,and $ signs in my eyes,were being traded on Ebay Oz. from 1999 for less than i paid for them in many cases or modest increases at best. That was the end of my interest in Decimals and back to my first love,pre-Dec.
Friend has the local TAB Agency and collects Coins for myself,amazing what goes thru his tills,20-30 year old Coins that are close to UNC,people throwing them in a jar or draw and only spending when money is tight,so that is about my only interest in Decimals at the moment,i hope the TAB Agencies open soon ,miss my weekly Coin run...

You touch on an interesting point. Minor cuds -how big* does a cud have to be to be worth keeping? *Or perhaps how obvious to the eye?
I have lately been sorting out ones I have noodled and, with some of the more common cuds, only keeping those that are good condition coins with the cud obvious. I do keep some smaller cuds where I can put a series together to show the progression of die damage over time.
I have never looked for reverse cuds on 10¢ coins although they are apparently not hard to find. The detailed design is a natural for cuds but also they will tend to be very tiny.
I seem to recall Goldie (https://www.australian-coins.net/member.php?action=profile&uid=120) saying that if he needs a magnifying glass to see an error he is not interested in it (or words to that effect).
Geez Jeff! Twins ..... I've been doing exactly the same. Working through them by year, type and progression, keeping only the better ones where I have ones identical. :good:
btw: If you ever want to do your head in ...... try and sort progressions of die deterioration out on the reverse of the 2007, 2008 & 2009 50c ........ :swoon:\
Re die damage, I suppose the point with pre-decimal coins is die failure was usually BIG with cracks widening to breaks.
Some dies would get pretty rough in modern terms but look perfect to our eyes back then.
Modern dies get a bit of pitting and everybody goes mad!
When I did statistics on unsorted bulk lots of predecimal coins up to 20% had some form or variety or error such was the relative crudeness of the manufacturing. A minor CUD that is causes collectors to faint now was pretty much the normal on a production pre-decimal.
What is really interesting now is to tip out an old box of scrap 1/2ds and 1ds and go spot the errors!
I did that about 10 years ago and could not believe what I had missed, having been re-trained to the decimal standards.
After carding about 50 coins I came to my senses and threw the rest back in the box.
When I look at the complex designs on modern coins, yes like the 50c!, its no wonder die deterioration stands out.
I reckon if the fault stands out like dogs balls in natural size, that is worth keeping.
If you need I microscope to see it, forget it.

Smaller cuds are out the door and only keeping the best of each year by denomination. Common errors (eg doubling on the 2009 50c) I am restricting to the best example I have and the rest go. I am not so much into progressions so the error needs to impress me otherwise only the full-blown error is being kept. Trying to sort out 2012 - 2015 50c and 2014 - 2016 $1 errors is a nightmare.
It's no small task and as Fred says there are some surprising finds that you make when re-inspecting coins.

I haven't done much lately - I found a 2017 Military Cross 20c in my change jar - clearly I hadn't bothered to look at the reverse and had planned on spending it.
I looked at a roll of dollar coins I've had sitting around for a couple of months and found a 2019 S and a 2017 Possum Magic.
I found a COURAGE 20c the other day going through the grandies money boxes.
I really haven't done any serious noodling since September last year.

When you find that spot some of my coins might be there too. Don't know where else they would be.
I actually have a set of 8 plastic bottles for coins dated 2013 - 2019 (2 for 2016) and although I looked in the 2019 bottle, I think I'll have to check it again as I reckon that's my best bet. It's time to swap the 2013 one over for a 2020
I have so many safe places it's ridiculous, as I never 'find' anything I've put away 'safe'. I often think to myself 'I'll remember where I put that' but now I know I'll have to change that thought to add 'yeah right!'
We sometimes have a cleanup and put items away in an organised manner. Guaranteed that, next time you want something, a big search eventuates -never put away where you later expect to find it.
I ask myself "Where would we have logically have put that?" but it is never that spot at all!
I'm so the same ....... I can never find where I've put things that I think was an organised spot! I spent 4 hours the other day looking for a docket that I know I put in a safe spot .... needless to say, I haven't found it yet :s

I went through some 5c pieces and found a 2019 JC and a 1970 New Zealand, through some 20c pieces and found a 2001 Bradman, a 1967 New Zealand, a 2016 Anniversary a year I can't remember with a big lamination on the obverse and through some 50c pieces where I saw a 2000 Royal Visit a couple each of the 2017 Mabo and 2016 Anniversary (but I didn't keep them).
I got some more 5c pieces and 20c pieces - only thing of note was a 1979 New Zealand 20c piece really.
But at least you're consistent Mr T!!! I haven't noodled for about a year now :-(

From four rolls of 50c pieces the only keeper was a 2001 Norfolk Island.
I got a 1972 5c from six rolls, a NSW 20c from 12 rolls and a Norfolk Island 50c from four rolls.
Picked up my first 2020 20 cent piece yesterday. Not in great condition but I'll hold it until I get a better one. In the same batch of change in place of a ten cent piece I got a 2001 Rhode Island quarter. I'm not complaining. Surprising the things you find though.

In the last two days, I have searched $6,000 of mixed coin for absolutely NUFFIN!
Ouch - that's a lot of coins for nil.
Raining today so an inside job was called for. I started sorting out my noodling keepers.

Most aUNC, nothing less than EF and quite a few would grade MS.
I have more again of the same -a filing cabinet drawer of loose ones in food containers. Most of those would probably be VF to EF. Will sort out the best ones and cash in the rest. I would say I will reclaim several hundred dollars just with that exercise.
Will start listing them for sale on eBay next week and see how I go. It is pointless just having them sitting here doing nothing.

Then the 50¢ Cof and CoA, 20¢, $1 -about as many of those as the 50¢. Fewer then of 5¢, 10¢ and $2.

Lovely stuff Jeff! It is a real task for the head sorting out the keepers eh!
Requires short stints and plenty of coffee -perhaps something stronger if later in the day.
I find it helps to pick one coin and use it as a benchmark to compare to. Then group them as better than, about the same as and not as good as piles.
Good lighting and make sure my reading glasses are clean.

From a change jar today I got a Wallabies $2, a police $2, a repatriation $2, an X $1, a 2019 JC $2 and a 2020 JC 20c.
Oh and a 1995 UN 20c piece - been a while.
I got an Invictus Games $2, an Aboriginal language 50c and a 2020 JC $2 from a family member's change yesterday.
I got two 2020 20c pieces from a friend's car ash tray yesterday.
Oh and from the same ashtray I got a 2020 10c piece, a 2019 IRB 10c piece and a 2019 S privy mark dollar.
From a family member's change bowl I got a 2020 $2 (there were two), a 2020 20c (there were two), a 2019 JC 20c and a 2013 (I think) dollar with a small rabbit ear.

Yeah I've been surprised at the good strike rate from such small amounts - I'm sure a standard sack full of coins from the bank isn't normally this bountiful.
I got 5 x $1 rolls from the bank yesterday. Not much to report from that lot, but did find a 2014 MOR. Not the best condition though.
Got some more rolls today, so will report back later if I find anything interesting.

And the answer would be employees at security companies like Chubb, Armaguard, Prosegur and the like that have cottoned on to the fact that there is more to be made selling to we suckers who collect them.
I have just noodled through $240 x $1 coins for a surprising find of 1 x Sir Henry Pparkes Rotation and 1 x COF Rotation at 290 degrees.
First lot of $1 coins I have done since Oct 2019.

But after going through just short of 15,000 x $2 coins in the past few weeks, I still have not found a an Anniversary of the end of WW11 which I would like to find. In fact, I have not seen one anywhere here in Victoria.
I got some rolls yesterday - I haven't cracked them yet but I can see some 2020 5c pieces I think.
From what is available on fleabag there appears to be no shortage of 2020 5, 10 and 20 cent pieces and $2 coins but haven't seen any 50 cent coin bags or rolls for sale or any MoR dollars so those would be the ones to watch out for I imagine.
Just spotted some Armaguard 50 cent rolls at ridiculous prices.
It could be that there are not many of the 50c or $1 made, or maybe they are just not released yet?
I think there must have been a big drop in the usage of coins, so maybe they have made less, or just not released them yet?
We'll see - the release of the unsaleable dollar coin rolls by the mint last year suggests that there was a need for dollar coins at least.

There is a seller on fleabag who has 45 rolls of H/H or T/T rejected RAM rolls who wants $800 EACH for them. Hence part of the reason why you aren't seeing any in circulation. The greed is palpable.

I started on my rolls and from the 50c I got my first 2019 JC 50c and incredibly I got a 2000 incuse - third one for me I think.
An incused is the better find. Don't turn up very often.

Today was a good day for me to noodle.
went to bank and got $2,000 in $100 notes, had a look at them and one was a 2010 AA10 Note in almost unc condition. (Had a good look at the note, no folds or tears but a few edge ripples as if it had been put away a long time ago).
I then got $1,700 worth of $2 coins and $200 worth of $1 coins.
Noodled them for:
2 x 2020 Donation dollars, a first find for these for me.
1 x 1997 Smithy with a lamination flaw.

You certainly don't see many donation dollars in circulation. I've never had one. So much for 25 million minted. Shame we have such a long wait for official figures.

Took a bag of dollars back yesterday and the teller asked me if I wanted some 50¢ that had just come in. Naturally I said yes. In $300 a large number of commemoratives at EF to aUNC. That will do me thanks very much.
Most have a grease film -the old keep them in the kitchen, near the stove trick- but acetone will fix that.
And my first 2019 Indigenous Language coin. 2.1M mintage so they will likely be rather scarce to find.
I needed some cash, so I released $50 worth of commemorative coins in the till at work,
including some of the Indigenous Language coin.

I went through a family member's change jar yesterday. Not much unfortunately - there was an AITSIS 50c and an anniversary 2016 $2 (which was surprisingly beaten up).
I kept a 2000 rabbit ear and a 2018 kangaroo back cud.
Just found this one in rather nice condition. Much, much better than you would expect for a 36 year old coin.

I went to my local "Which Bank" earlier today to deposit some coins and to get some more to noodle. I was then informed that the bank manager wanted to see me.
I finished what I was doing and fronted the bank manager where I was informed that as I was not a business account holder, I was not supposed to be using the atm's or the coin issue machine.
I should get myself an ABN, a business account and business account card to prevent me from having my normal every day debit card being frozen as I was using it as a business card.
I informed him that one several occasions in the past that I have tried to make alternate arrangements to secure bulk coin and was advised to use the hole in wall as they can't issue coins from/via the tellers.
So tomorrow I will be investigating the ABN etc and try and become a business rather than a single person.
Has anyome else been advised of the same please.
I have been spoken to and told the coin machines are for businesses, not individuals. However if it is only occasional and not more than $100 they won't take action. Needless to say I was not impressed. That is not my local branch but in the next town where we usually grocery shop once a week. They even called my local branch to report me and ask for them to speak to me too!
I do have an ABN -didn't think to acquaint them with that fact. But my accounts are all "personal" even though one account was opened for and used exclusively for business purposes; as far as I am concerned that is a business account but without the frills and extra charges for what which bank calls a business account.
Thankfully our local branch has traditional tellers who receive and dispense cash. Only three regular staff who all know me and will nod or shake their head, when I walk in, to indicate if they have coin I have not seen yet. They get a big box of chocolate from me each Christmas and damned if I will give chocolates to the coin machine.
Nasty bank. I regularly withdraw $1000 of $2 coins from various St George machines and have never had any problems. Well, till yesterday when the machine was out of $2 coins. The other thing that was unusual was the bank itself had shut well before closing time. The whole of Westfields Parramatta was a virtual ghost town mid afternoon.
Annoying - I never take too much from the machines I've never been hassled (this is with Westpac) but making them only for business account holders? Hardly seems fair.
Meanwhile, I have 10 rolls of coins on my desk that I still haven't got to yet.

Better than I was expecting.
Lots of 2020 5c pieces too more than two of the five rolls.

After providing the available quantities over the counter, they then suggested the in-branch Business banking ATM as a 24/7 option, issued me with a generic card to operate, and proceeded to demonstrate how to use the machine for the remainder of the coins that they were short of from the counter. Guess it comes down to the particular bank and their policies - I think in general, they would tend to discourage individuals changing large amounts, to minimise Armaguard handling fees.
As to my recent noodle, a few surprises - in particular the 2019 50 cent pieces (both IRB and JC portraits - 240k and 70k posted mintages).

Which bank issued you with the card?
The latest noodle provided the following: a solid haul of JC 2019 50c - all three coins were out of one roll. Pity I could only get 6 rolls from the machine, and 0 the week prior...
My favourite $2 coloured design is the "Eternal Flame" - sadly it has the highest mintage, but am I worried? Not even in the slightest.

A friend of my wife had a tub of old change and didn't know what to do with it. My wife said to get some change bags, count it out and cash it in but the friend was dubious.
So wife bought them and said Jeff can count and bag them. It was a little over $80 of mostly 5¢ and 10¢ coins. Highest date In them was 2010.
Sorted and bagged them this morning and found a 1972 5¢ and a 1951 sixpence (bent with scrapes).
There were a lot of ring ins;

•Eight dimes
•Eight quarters, four of them statehood or national park issues.

Besides a donation dollar, I found a 1987 New Zealand 20c in a family member's change tray.
I got a 1994 rabbit ears from a roll of dollars. I also had a roll of 50c pieces but the only interesting thing was an aboriginal languages 50c.
I went through some $1, $2 and $0.50c on a daily basis, to be precise, $2,000 worth at a time.
One of those days provided 91 Aboriginal Flag coins.
A few days later, another batch of 26 of them.
I am now keeping a coin bag of 50 coins of each of the coloured $2 coins and putting any further finds back into circulation.
If anyone wants an y of these coloured coins, both $1 and $2 coins, just PM me with your requirements. Cost, face value but you pay the postage.
I cant supply any of the Qantas coins, Indigenous Soldier coins and several of the earlier coloured coin issues.

And a Wags the Dog $2 from a family member yesterday.
I went through some 5c and 20c rolls and had some luck - an NSW, Victoria and NT 20c from 11 rolls.
A few 2021, 2020 and 2019 JC 20c pieces as well. Also another whole roll of 2021 5c pieces.

I used to work for a bank. I wish I still had contacts for when new banknotes land.
I am still going through 10-12K of coins a week for little or no return.
I got a single roll of dollar coins and did exceptionally well - four 2021 donation dollars, four 2020 dollar coins and a 2022 Australoventor dollar - all uncirculated.
There was a also a well-circulated 2004 dollar with a lamination flaw on the raised rim.

$400 worth of 20c pieces in rolls and 8 rolls were all 2022, nice and shiney.
Also $500 of two dollars of which 4 rolls were all 2022. again nice and shiney.
Other than that, nothing.
I've gone through three of five rolls of 5c pieces - one was all 2021 (and I suspect the remaining two are as well), but I got a 1999 New Zealand and also a 1966 11 o'clock upset in not great condition.

I don't feel like I do very often any more but a roll here and there is better than nothing.
Well I have finally made my decision.
I shall not be noodling, repeat, shall not be noodling any more coins from the Commonwealth Bank.
Why, they took $54.00 out of my account for fees as I was using the CBC coin count machines over the past years.
Up till last month, I was paying $10.00 fees using a Business Account with an ABN attached as per request by the local manager
Just before Xmas, I had a problem with the coin count at a certain CBC Bank and the teller/officer asked me why I was paying the $10.00 per month fee3.
I informed her why and she said I cancel it if you wish and there will be no more fees payable. OK, so I cancelled the fee.
What she didn't inform me was any time I used the coin count machine using my business card, a fee of $3.00 would be applied each and every time I used the machine. It is deemed an Assisted Transaction cost $3 a time.
Well as a result, I have emptied the monies I had in that account. I have cancelled my ABN and now to find another bank that I can deal with.
In other words, goodbye Commonwealth Bank.
Does the $3 fee apply if you deposit or withdrawal coins directly from the teller?

The CBC is in turmoil.
The local branch (Toongabbie NSW) descended from an efficient usable service 10 years ago, to a joint run by bewildered teenagers 5 years ago to closing last year.
Gone. They even pulled the ATMs out.
Advice is to use woollies or the post office if you want cash.
If you have a real problem use the phone, so long as you don't mind a 30-minute wait "all our operators are busy".
They want you to go online using card only.
They have all symptoms of a business going out of business.

The banks don't give a rats arse about the people, it's all about massive profits and huge bonuses for senior executives.
All the banks are consolidating. St George has gotten rid of many ATMs in the past year. Replaced by fee charging privately owned or armoured car company ATMs. Now we can use Westpac ATMs for deposits (previously only withdrawls) of notes. Though can't use WBC coin machines for coin deposit/withdrawls. The local Mt Druitt WBC and St George branches closed a year ago due to water damage, now reopened as a combined branch. Also noted last week that the Bankwest branch in Parramatta is boarded up.
An ancestor of mine was a founding member of Bank of NSW, probably rolling in their grave now.
Going online doesn't always work, St George was offline about a month ago, sucks when you are trying to pay your rego and greenslip online.
ATMs also don't always work, the pub that I often work at had both ATMs down one night. One had run out of cash the previous night and the armoured car company was supposed to restock it the next day (no show). The other was stocked by the pub, but it ran out as the punters were draining it too fast with the other ATM out. Manager soon restocked the pub owned ATM so no big drama. But what will happen at normal ATMs if the armoured car company staff goes on strike or there is a bank run? Either could happen this year as there is a major shortage of licenced security officers (I'm one of them, have not had a day off since 20/12 and averaging 80 hours/week) so guards are getting poached by other companies, plus this year will be a stagflation recession so lots of people might stack cash to beat any run or shortage.
Same thing happened in Ballina after the Feb. Floods,Westpac & St George are now a combined Branch.
Friend who has a Business in Town said St George is slowly being phased out.

I went to my CBC bank today to deposit $1500 of $2 coins and the deputy manager pocked her head out said I wish to see you, please don't go.
I waited and eventually was escorted into an office and the door was closed.
I have been formally advised that I am not to use the hole in the wall coin machine as this just might cause a suspension of my bank account.
To put all in the picture, I purchase rolls of coins, take them home and noodle through them. I then take those coins back to the bank to have deposited back into my account via the hole in the wall coin count machine. Later that day, the deposit is made into my account.
I then withdraw the deposit and get more rolled coin for the hole in wall coin dispensing machine.
As a result of todays info, if I use the coin count machine again I could have my account suspended.
Now, if I turn up at the bank with say $2,000 worth of loose coin and front the teller, they will then tell me to use the hole in the wall to count the coins. But alas, I have been warned I can't use the hole in the wall coin count machine for the reason previously given.
So I have to develop a new scheme whereas I can deposit coins and withdraw whenever I wish.
As far as I am concerned, The commonwealth bank can go to you know where!
Hi Goldie, they are desperate now and cost cutting every way to reduce losses.
The customer can go and get stuffed.
They are not interested in the community and dealing with cash.

I got a 2021 Home and Away dollar from a roll today - not much else besides a better than average 1997 (these always seem well worn).
I got a 2020 dollar and 2022 dollar (both mob of roos) on the weekend.
Yesterday at my local Woolworths I saw an aEF George V florin in the charity box - date unknown as only the obverse was shown but it was a decent coin.
You should have offered them $5 for it.
I hve nt noodled a thing since my admission to hospital in early March.
Now I am at home I still not doing any noodling as my car/tpt is off the road.

I got a 2002 New Zealand 10c a few weeks ago - the first New Zealand coin in a good while for me.
And in some coins to look through last week I found a set only Charles Kingsford Smith dollar with A mint-mark.
And with the above there was also a 2018-P dime, 1 United Arab Emirates something (not sure of the year) and a 2006 New Zealand small 50c piece.

A family member found one of the Matildas one dollar coins for me the week before this one. Other than that I don't think I've found much myself.
I got a few sacks of change from family members and have too much to remember but there were lots of 2020 and 2021 donation dollars, three Philippines coins (2002 1 piso, 2016 5 piso and 2016 10 piso), three New Zealand coins (2x 1990 $1 and a 2016 50c), a 2012 Solomon Islands $2, a 2016 anniversary 10c, a dingo $1 and one of the dinosaur $1 coins (one starting with N).
And another couple of 2021 donation dollars, as well a 2014 Netherlands 2 euro.
From a family member's sack of coins - a 1990 US penny, a 1972 New Zealand 10c, a 2014 New Zealand $2, a 2004 big head 20c and two US $5 notes (one Series 2013 an done Series 2017A). I think someone had paid them for something with United States currency for some reason.
Also, a 2000 New Zealand 10c from another family member's change.
Not so much in the noodling anymore but this one turned up in change recently.

I got my usual lot of cash coin from the bank, $2 and 20c pieces.
Quickly flicked through them looking for miss strikes etc.
Nothing much in the $2 but in the 20 cent two brilliant "AUNC" old dates a 1994 and 2011 "international women".
The rest of the 20c were all dates from 1966 to 2022 grading from shiny to road kill.
How could a 1994 coin, let alone a 2011 survive in that condition?
Always amazes me. Must have been put aside somewhere and finally cashed in.
By the way the bank branch, the Commonwealth at Seven Hills Sydney had signs up, CLOSING DOWN.

At least they aren't shutting up shop entirely. In the last 5 years we have had our local Suncorp, NAB, ANZ, Westpac, Heritage, CUA and one of two Commonwealth banks all shut up shop. I think there was another one I can't remember as well.
All we have left now is the last Commonwealth bank, a Bank of Queensland and a Bendigo Community bank.
Found out recently that all the Bankwest branches are closing. Shouldn't worry me too much,
as I very rarely visit a store anyway. I had to go deposit a cheque recently and that was the

I had to transfer some money from one bank to another and they (Commonwealth bank) made me pay $30 for an international money transfer even though it was to Scumcorp here in Queensland. Afterwards they said I could have had a bank cheque for free. Mongrels.
Mine was a refund from RACWA. I received a letter first saying it was coming and I could ring up and change the method of payment. So I rang them and asked them to make it a direct deposit payment and the cheque still arrived anyway. :dash1:
I had to call Foxtel to get a refund for my mother's account after she died. They kept sending statements saying she was owed $54. Early February I asked them to pay it to her estate. The guy said they would send a cheque. I wasn't interested in arguing at that point. Three weeks later, no cheque. I ring back, oh that was paid into the account it came from on the 2nd of February, which was BEFORE I had rung chasing it up. I said which account. They couldn't tell me. I said you mean the account that was frozen because my mother died. They said it hasn't been returned. Luckily it had been transferred in just before the account was wound up into one estate account but I had to get a bank statement to track it.
Nearly as hopeless as Telecom.

I watched a video about a UK noodler, who mentioned the banks there are no longer allowing people to buy big bags of coins for noodling. All part of the developed world trying to end the use of physical money in thrall to the internet and electrcity.

I got a Royal Australia Mint Jumbo bag of $500 with 2024 $1 AFL coins in it. I have not seen yellow bags before only the clear plastic ones that you can see what coins are in them.
It was dated 18/10/2023 which is before the coins were released in 2024. They obviously printed the coins well before release date and had them in storage.

I think the 500 won is close enough to a 20c piece though slightly small.
I'm guessing the euros were passed as dollar coins and maybe the two euros was passed as a 20c? Anyway, all from a farmer's honesty box and apparently anything goes.

That stuff on the counterfeit toonies was interesting. If the chinese counterfeiters can make fakes that complex for bugger all, I wonder how many of ours are fake. They look pretty easy to fake.
Counterfeits are a real problem. I believe our $2 coins are countefeited, but I have never identified one. The UK had to issue new coins because of counterfeits.

H is for Hahn, the designer of the reverse. P is for plated. P was used from 1999 onwards until they started using the maple leaf symbol in 2006.
2006 was an interesting year for Canadian coinage. There was 2 options on other denominations too, but the 5c had 3 different designs and I think there is 6 different 1c coins.

From two sacks of coins I got a 2007 C counterstamp Sydney Harbor Bridge dollar, a 2019 10 Malaysian sen, a 2016 Spanish (I think - guy on a horse) 50 euro cent, 1 and 2 Thai baht (both new king), a 2000 New Zealand 5c, a 2020 New Zealand 50c, a 2019 S dollar, a 2001 Queensland 50c and a 2001 ACT 50c.
Guy on the horse 50 Eurocent may be Italian, if surrounded by weird concentric/spirograph type pattern underneath and RI monogram nearby (Repubblica Italia). If just a 2D dude on Charging horse, its not. Spanish coins usually have "Espana" somewhere on them.
Don't worry I always confuse Spain and Italy.

From a couple of weeks ago I got a 2019 U dollar, a 1996 C dollar, two 2008 New Zealand 20c pieces, a 1970 New Zealand 5c, a 1978 New Zealand 10c and a 1988 New Zealand 20c.
From yesterday I got a 2019 A dollar, a 2016 anniversary 10c, a 2016 1 Indian rupee, a 1978 New Zealand 10c, a 1977 New Zealand 20c and a 1966 10c and 1975 20c that are both aUNC.

I got one of the old NZ ten cents in change the other day. Wasn't interested in keeping it so I thought I'd try my luck with the coin machine at Suncorp and it happily took it crediting me with 10 Australian cents.
I hope it wasn't the scarce 2005.

Latest batch from last weekend was 1 Thai baht (new king), a 2002 50 euro cent from Italy, a 1997 New Zealand 10c, a 1976 New Zealand 20c, a 2008 rabbit ears dollar and in decent condition a 1985 dollar, a 1967 20c, a 1982 20c and a 2006 50c.
The rupee is from Hyderabad then. Nice find.
Had a great pick up the other day. Put some change into the Scumcorp coin machine and checked the count. All okay. Checked the coin return out of habit.

Someone must have dumped their grandmother's collection in the machine. A near pristine 1969 50 cent piece, a couple of uncirculated 1981 20 cents, a few 5 cent pieces and then the good stuff.
A 1963 shilling.
5 florins. 2 1959 ones and 3 1951 Jubilee florins. None are great condition but not awful and of course all of them are 50% silver so quite a win.
Someone must have been looking out for me.

Went through some handfuls of change and got a 2004 big head 20c and a 2001 Northern Territory 50c which was good, and a decent 2004 10c and 1980 20c as well.
From some more change I got a 1989 New Zealand 5c, a 2009 Fiji 20c, a 2016 Indonesia 500 rupiah, a 2019 U dollar and a 2019 S dollar.

I got a 1996 New Zealand 5c, a 1967 New Zealand 20c and a 2004 big head 20c from some bags.
I find it hilarious our junk coins from 1967 to 2004 are still circulating there.
You guys seriously need to scrap the large and worthless cupronickel from 60 years ago and join the cheap plated steel coin wave of NZ and now the whole Pacific.
What's the wear like on plated steel? Our 1966 cupronickel coins often look nearly as good as the year they were made. Lots of 1966 ones still doing the rounds. Not 100% mind you, but still good enough.

Revisiting - the above bags from 20/6 had a New Zealand 1976 20c, 1987 20c, 2016 50c and 2015 $1, a 1999 French 2 euro, a 2016 Italian 5 euro cents, a 2016 5 Norwegian kronor, a 2008 100 South Korean won and British 1993 20p and 1997 50p.
Last weekend from some coins in a box I got 2x 1975 New Zealand 20c, a 2003 New Zealand $2, a 2006 Irish 50 euro cents, a 2021 E for Emu dollar a 2001 Northern Territory 20c.
On Tuesday I got a 2010 Fiji 5c and 2009 Fiji 20c from the coin ATM.
A few things this month. On 1/8 I got a 2011 Canadian quarter, British 2014 10p and 2016 one pound, 2001 Spanish euro 50c and 2002 German 2 euro, 2024 Indian 5 rupee, a Japanese 100 yen and from New Zealand a 2006 small 20c, 2006 small 50c, 2008 $1 and 2013 $1. On top of that a 5 euro note, a 10 euro note, a Malaysian 10 ringgit note, two Singapore $10 notes, a US $1 note and a US $10 note.

I have not done much noodling for a while, but got a few rolls of coins recently to do a little noodling.
Found a couple of coloured $2 coins which was nice.
This is not earth shaking but interesting.
I dropped into the Seven Hills (in Sydney) Combank to get a bit of coin change in $1 rolls.
Once more i found in a roll a 1984 MS state dollar!
Apart from bag marks and a trace of handling its MS.
Does this this happen to anybody else?
Has somebody been hanging on to a trove of 1984 and finally cashed them in?

I put it with the other TWO found in the last year.

I have come across MS 1984 $1 coins in the past. Usually find them in the till at work.
I also wondered if someone was spending an old coin hoard.
Posted before but a friend managed the local TAB and kept coins for me,amazing what NCLT turned up over the years.
Also UNC early decimals,people must keep/store them and spend when funds are low.
My wife worked at a bank and often brought me NCLT, MS and pre-decimal and foreign coins. Sometimes the MS coins would be a number of identical in the same deposit. Surprising number of 1966 50º¢, presumable cashing in a hoard and not knowing their bullion value.
Also the contents of moneyboxes once they had been counted and credited. She would pay for them from my account and I would roll/bag them to deposit, less any items of interest of course.
One time there was a large number of "grey ghosts" ($100 paper notes) totalling several thousand dollars. a family member of a recently deceased person cashed them in, apparenty he would put his pay in a draw and just takeout some notes when he needed them. I presume if there were smaller notes they were half inched by the family! On that occassion I was allowed to look at them in the manager's office with a check count done before I left. I kept a few MS/consecutive numbers.
