Title: Help identifying letters 1 DM 1950's
Post by: Mousie on October 29, 2017, 09:38:21 AM
Hi folks

I have this set of 4 x 1950 1 x Deutsche Mark given to me years ago.  Obviously it says on the label Mint Mark Set then in brackets D F G J.  How to I interpret this or disregard it and just use the normal grading like VF etc.

Or are the Letters part of the grading?

The D, F, G and J are mint marks and nothing to do with grade. I'm not 100% sure and sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but think it's
D=Munich mint,
F=Stuttgart,
G=Karlsruhe
J=Hamburg.
Other mint marks are A=Berlin and E=Muldenhutte (only until 1953)

C = Frankfurt
D = Munich
E = Muldenhutten
F = Stuttgart
G = Karlsruhe
H = Darmstadt
J = Hamburg

In the list of mintmarks posted by Triggersmob: the mints using letters B, C and H were shut down by the Prussian government shortly after German Imperial unification. Mintmark "B" was recycled during the Nazi era for use on German coins minted by the mint in Vienna, Austria.

Mintmark "E" was in use up to and beyond WWII; it was on the East German side of the post-war border and the East Germans shut it down in the early 1950s. The Berlin mint (mintmark A) was likewise in the East German half of Berlin, so was used to strike East German coins prior to unification. It is still used today, so the five mintmarks you can find on German euro coinage are A, D, F, G and J.

Germany retains its multitude of mints, when most other countries of similar size have centralized to just one mint, because the mints are owned by the various state governments, not the federal government - so a state which has a mint on its territory literally has a licence to print money, and to gain whatever revenues they can from the production of collector coins from that mint. Which is not entirely different to how the Western Australian government owns the Perth Mint.

The letters D F G and J are the mint marks of 4 different German mints and they are stamped at the 6 o'clock position on the coins and they have nothing to do with the grading. For some years there are scarce and rare issues for one or more of the mints. A catalogue like Krause will list the details and values.

Sorry just returned to the forum and thank you all for the detailed information to all for the advice here.  Actually pretty darn pleased with the assistance and very appreciative of and I can search the link and details.  I'm just slowly going though my coins and notes and updating a spreadsheet with a tad extra information like above so the labels mean something to others.

:welcome: Great Mousie! It's so refreshing for a new member to thank the people here for their assistance.

Yes, there is a lot of very knowledgeable people here (wish I was one). :laugh2:

I like your pre-decimal notes and your collection of test prefix 100's ...... going well there!!

I wish I still had my pre-decimals as I noted that the serial numbers on many of yours were very vibrant ..... I can't recall what mine were like.

Anyhow, I really hope you stick around and enjoy the forum as much as I do!!!
