Title: Can an error become a variety?
Post by: Graham on January 17, 2013, 10:02:20 AM
I was just looking at my list of 2006 $1 coins (see below).  I have categorised all of them and have a large number of errors that repeat.

If I have (say) 13 x Cuds (Left of Queen's Nose), does that constitute a variety, i.e., it has been repeated on numerous occasions, it has been produced by the same die (probably). Note that I have 183 (at least) 2006 rabbits.  The yanks seem to do it with DDRs etc.

P.S. Unless stipulated all the below are uncirculated.  However, I have always treated coins without bagmarks as the only truly UNC (IMHO)

P.P.S.  The GEM $1s all came from a couple of rolls of 'CIRCULATED' armaguard coins.  They were all beautiful and so perfectly formed!  It was like a number of coins had escaped from Wedding Sets.  I still chucked a number of these 'strange' coins because they were slightly marked. I only kept the best.  A definite strange noodling find!

The difference I see between an error and a variety is that a Variety is a design change and not a result of die wear or break down.
i would include these as varieties;
1933 over date penny
1921/22 3d
1933/34 3d
Incuse 2000 50 cents

None of these are a result of die wear/deteriation, they are deliberate die changes

All the cuds and die cracks are a result of wear or damage and in my veiw cannot be considered as a veriety

Graham, You have to stop trying to pinch images from CCF.
They simply wont let you do it.

Struck the motherload of these 'Large' 2006 Rabbits

This is the "small" 2006 Rabbit.  It is still forming perhaps?

Most of my 2006 errors are in this condition. I was lucky enough to get a large number of new rolls.

You've seen the large strikethrough. Can you see this one?  Look closely.

These feet must have belonged to a flat footed policeman. LOL  My apologies to all the Mr Plods out there!

Another die crack
(http://www.coincommunity.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10156/Die_Crack%7E0.jpg)

Remember the 'Lizard Tongue' die cracks in 2004(?).  This is the 2006 variety (for want of a better word).  It seems that there are inherent die flaws in the design. e.g. lizard tongue, spew roo, back pack roo and certainly the rabbits!

The point in showing some of these errors off is that I have multiples of all them (apart from the strikthroughs).  I know they are a result of die fractures (etc).  The issue for me is if a person was into collecting errors, wouldn't they all be called a 'variety'?  Splitting hairs I know!

They're mine so I can do as I please.  They also tell you how to, i.e., "Use the code below to insert this image in a forum post". They simply don't don't specify which forum.

I believe most of us are members there.  There is no problem with us discussing CCF, but woebetide those CCF members who try the same thing on the CCF forum.   Having said that, those are their rules which I respect.

P.S.  I don't believe it uses any disk space on our site.

Typical attitude of the people who run that forum.

Graham, if you email me the originals images I can upload them to my website for you.

Thank you for the kind offer.  However, I don't believe there is a problem with me posting images of my ccf files to another site.  I just had a fairly good look at the rules of the gallery and there didn't appear to be any barriers me doing so.

If you or anyone else would like images of any of the decimal errors I have, I would only be too pleased to provide them.

If I find that I can't do what I like with my ccf files then I will certainly take you up on your kind offer.
Kind Regards
Graham

Graham, we cannot see your images. All we see is an aggressive message from CCF.

Emu666,
Are you referring to Trout's msg.  I didn't perceive it as aggressive.
I can see all of them.  I'll try posting them again.

When I post, it seems that the image is being tacked onto the last post.

Not a new post

All my replies are being tacked onto my previous post.  SH*t happens!  It wasn't important anyway.
It is a bug in our system and I don't believe an issue with CCF.  I have posted these images many times previously.
Moving on. Nothing to see here.

I've tried new reply and quick reply. Same problem.

CCF seems to have setup their images to prevent them from being linked to from other sites.  Sites often do this to stop other sites from leeching their bandwidth, PPH and I do something similar for the blog images but we allow any coin forum and eBay to link to our images.  The reason why some of you can see the images and others cannot is that you've probably seen the image on the CCF site and you're seeing an image from your browser cache.

This is a bit weird as Triggersmob has posted images from CCF and they're still intact and I haven't viewed them on CCF.

I'm not sure how many images Graham has posted in this thread, but I only see 2 of them.
