So, I just got the ballot announcement. 1,500 mint sets, for the measly sum of $41 nett, IF you win, and $1 if you lose.
Seriously?
Print the PDF, fill it in, SNAIL MAIL it back (cost $1), for the chance to pay $30 plus $10 postage for a mint set with $3.85 worth of coins in it.
They can stick this where de sun don't shine, I reckon. :(
The "Packkyboxitis" Mob will go Nuts over this, Me Not so much
The sales spiel goes on to say;
QuoteThis unique set features the 2017 $1 'C' Mintmark Uncirculated Coin – Centenary of the Trans-Australian Railway. This coin is normally only available from the Mint's Visitor Press in Canberra and is not available for sale through our eShop or Mint Issue catalogues.
This is BS as the "C" mintmark is available in the 4 coin $1 set.
I'm sure we'll see the usual suspects flogging them for $100+. :dodgy:

I don't want to be a pedant, but isn't it a Privy mark on the 4 coin set? which is different to a counter stamp?
Or are they both counted as "mint marks".
The picture below is of the Sydney counter stamp and privy marks. I haven't checked what the 'c' actually looks like. Will take a photo later.

Well, yes and no.
'Mint marks' are supposed to identify the producing mint. So C, P, M for the aussie mints.
'Counterstamps', such as produced by the portable presses at various locations, are sort of mintmarks, but not really. They may indeed signify the location, M, S, B, A, P for the various cities, but then you have E and G, which IMO were pretty meaningless.
'Privy marks' I think are a massive con. They're a marketing excercise, designed to make you buy the same coin in multiple different configurations. Exactly the same as what Australia Post has been doing with stamps for decades now.
I wouldn't classify these 1,500 sets as mintmarked. Privy marked, yeah, at best.

"B" "M" and "S" are Privy marks, The "C" is a Mintmark it is printed next to each coin in the 4 coin folder :ok:

What the hell are we talking about? I just checked my email, and I can't see any information about a ballot. :dontknow:

Nup. I guess that explains it. I thought the mint was doing this. :laugh2:
Don't discount the possibility of unique edge milling segmentation for the Trans C MM coin, after all is said and done, the collar die is the third die used in the minting process.
Even if the Trans C MM dollar happens to be just a refugee from the four coin set mintage, a six coin set that displays a Trans C MM coin having unique edge milling segmentation when compared to the other 1499 sets, might be a goer.
So, it's not just about the packaging, although, a specific thread for reporting and sharing edge milling positions will need to be enacted. That's assuming all ballot winners are forum members, of course ;)
Well there you go. Thanks for that. I should learn to read better.
Those privy sets do appear to be a bit farcical

Last years ballot coin had the C Privy.
Like trout says the $1 C Privy is available in the 4 coin set.
Last year they cost $15 + $10 postage.
The packaging this year seems to protect the coins better than last years version.

That's why I don't buy them. They're just a blatant cash grab.
