Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat
Please put a 1930 penny in my brand new hat
If you've got no 1930 penny, a 1923 ha'penny will do
If you've got no 1923 ha'penny, then God bless you!

That's amazing!! Would be interesting to know what they paid for it? Ebay is a bit of a minefield, but I reckon there must have been some nice finds over the years, the early 2000's in particular.

Yeah it was bought in the early 2000's from a UK seller

C'mon trout, I know your comment is more of a general comment about Facebook rather than the coin itself, but saying something that could cast doubt on the authenticity of this coin is not really fair dinkum. That coin is owned by a collector just like you and me. He wouldn't like flippant comments that question the authenticity of his coin carelessly thrown around on forums.

Moreover, the guy who posted the Facebook post is a well-liked member here, and it looks bad if someone (without meaning to) says he posted a picture of a dud coin. I know that that wasn't your intention, and I know you weren't really saying the coin is not Kosher, but the comment just seems unnecessary.

And that 1923 halfpenny - it's the best one I've ever seen.

Facebook has never been one of my favourite sources for accurate information.
In all seriousness Eric, With the images that have been posted of this coin here there is absolutely NO way that the authenticity or a grade of this coin could be established with only these images to go by.
How many Wannabe Wonders have you seen posted in different forums that have turned out to be nothing special at the end of the day?

Given that you yourself have seen this coin "In Hand" then the authenticity IS undoubtedly established, So what are your thoughts as to a grade for this coin?

The photos haven't been altered but some people aren't comfortable
judging a coin by the photos which makes it difficult if you live in a
remote location

No the images haven't been changed and No they are not good enough for a serious assessment of the coin.
Would you be happy to use images of this quality on Numisbid when you list a coin?

I very much doubt that you would put 40-70k on the line on the basis of those images Walter, Unless you have seen the coin "In Hand" or had information from other people as to If the coin was "Kosher" and the grade warranted the price.

Seriously you can't expect collectors to go "Oh Wow" or "By Crikey" about a coin based on those crappy images:angel:

On a separate note the owner of this coin put  a lot of money on the line and won. Apparently the photos were very poor on the listing.

But good luck to whoever ended up with this coin, a fantastic addition.

You'd be better off buying the Merivale Bridge. At least then you'd have a monopoly on Brisbane train fares until CRR is built. This will only ever happen under a Labor government, so you might want to campaign for the Coalition in order to maximise your profits. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be sitting in crowded commuter trains uttering curse words. :winkextra:

"JEEZ'' Buying a coin for a price tag of 40--70k without viewing the coin in person would be a very unsafe practice. Base jumping from high rise towers would be safer.:yahoo:

I have no idea really, but I doubt anything like these amounts would have been paid, particularly back in the early days of the internet. Lots of good stuff went cheap in the early 2000's, and the buyer in all likelihood probably got it for a song, and good luck to them.

MR Roberts. Wynyard Coin Centre is selling a 1923 halfpenny PCGS AU50 for $12.500.    My rough estimate would be. AU53 $16.500. AU55 $21.000. AU58 $27.000. MS60 $35.000. MS61 $45.000. and MS62 $58.000. The coin candy 1923 looks like it could go to MS63RB. $75.000 EASY.

Sure stan, but what I was alluding too is that Steve has said this coin was purchased on ebay in the early 2000's, therefore, it's possible it may have sold for much less than its true value then because in the early days of ebay there were many bargains to be had. Maybe the buyer did pay the right weight, maybe they got a bargain, that's all I'm saying without really knowing anything I might add.

I think someone has already said the owner is a forum member here, come on, give us a hint to how much it cost :beg::)
