Title: eBay fraud, advice
Post by: nealeffendi on April 09, 2017, 02:35:07 AM
I bid on (and won) a coin on ebay Australia (item number 262916581240):ebay:. The seller has a feedback of 0 and the listing states the seller is in Georgia USA. I paid via Paypal nearly 2 days ago and the money came out of my St George account. The interesting thing is the funds were unclaimed. I was already suspicious (a rare medieval gold coin in a NGC slab selling for below bullion value, by a seller in the US, to good to be true). So I did a search and found the exact same coin currently for sale by a big dealer in the US. Cancelled the Paypal payment and the funds immediately went into my Paypal account.
My concern is this: When does a seller get my address and other details? At the auction end (2 days ago), when I made payment (also 2 days ago) or once the funds have cleared? (which they didn't) I'm concerned a crook was only after my address so that they can rob me. I think the crook is in Australia as the postage was listed as Australia Post 500g satchel (which a person in the US wouldn't use). Advice please.

It does sound pretty "Sus" Mate.
As soon as you win or buy anything on eBay your address is supplied to the seller and yes the 500g Aussie Post satchel is definitely NOT something a genuine US seller would use.

Yes,Trout is correct. That is the only reason why I have a PO box.. There is a way US seller can post items via Aus post from US ( Amazon US send items via Aus post ).. Good luck with it mate, unfortunately it is bit too late now to protect your address...

If you're lucky enough to live near a bank with a safety deposit box facility, open a box, even if only for peace of mine. I've heard so many stories of houses being burgled that I couldn't sleep peacefully knowing that my coins were under my bed or in a small house safe.

I am with Guardian Vaults. They are pretty good. Happy with them so far.

I have the smallest one and it's getting full. Just wondering if I should get a bigger one at GV, or get another one with someone else. It would be cheaper to upgrade to a bigger one.
