Title: Cyclone Debbie QLD
Post by: robbiegal on March 27, 2017, 10:14:17 PM
Be safe if you are a member and live up Nth QLD way
I have family and friends up that way
Let's hope that the only bad effects will be the price of bananas
But I suspect this one is going to be very nasty. ...
All people can do now is baton down the hatches and ride out the storm
Tomorrow is another day

Is there a forum member on a cruise this week? Hope all is Ok

I have been through a lot of cyclones here on the West coast and a cat4 storm is a pretty nasty piece of work.
Stay safe and if you have been told to evacuate do so while you can.
There is absolutely Nothing that you can do to prevent any damage during the storm and you can always come back Safe and Sound after the event for the clean up.
Boats, cars and houses can be replaced, People can't.

Goldie is still out in the Pacific near Tahiti.
far enough away not to be affected by the cyclone I would think.

Let's hope the damage is kept to a minimum.

Love the cats

I have been though a few cyclones when I lived in QLD

Have been watching ABC News 24 and it seems to have favoured lower down which is good in one way as the larger centres have more debris to get tossed around

I will say that the towns look to have done a fantastic pre-cyclone clear up which has to help the cause

Big cat 5
Yep - definitely  raining cats and dogs in Nth qld!!!

I have experienced one cyclone; on a remote island off Fiji. Had to sit it out inside a storm shuttered cabin for two days -except for a couple of hours when the eye passed. Not a pleasant experience in more ways than one.

yeah - they can be quite frightening

don't believe that i have been through a cat4 like trout has

the hubby was a kid when Althea came through Nth QLD long time ago

I remember the evacuation of Darwin as the people being relocated were coming through the city where I lived
One of my brothers went up there to work on the rebuild

Now I just live in a bushfire zone which is just as scarey!!!

I was in Dampier in 1989 When Cat5 Cyclone Orson came through.
Luckily Dampier and Karratha houses are Cyclone "Rated" and the damage was minimal, The wind however wasn't and Pannawonica copped a bit of a beating from what I remember.

Can someone explain to me why TV reporters need to file their reports whilst standing in bucketing rain? Beats me.

Dramatic effect, I think they call it.

The only cyclone I have been near is cyclone Alby, but I have no recollection of it.

DIDN'T YOUR MAMA TEACH YOU  HOW TO GET OUT OF THE RAIN?

Yes, she did!  People always ask me, is it necessary for reporters to stand outside in adverse weather conditions?  And I always give them the same answer.  Yes!  And their next question is always the same:  WHY? And I always give them the easy answer which is: would you believe me if I tried to tell you a storm was coming, if I was in a warm and comfortable setting like say, your living room?  Probably not.

Most reporters don't mind the conditions, never mind that most of them are soaking wet by the end of the day and  extremely tired.  Yes, it's how we earn our living, but there's more to it than just a paycheck!  There is a warm and fuzzy feeling at the end the day when you know you have answered the question that most of us ask when a storm like Hurricane Earl approaches - are we going to be okay or not?

I've seen camera equipment lost, reporters almost blown away by the wind (thankfully nobody was hurt) and they still (reporters and photographers that is) are up to the task!  The other thing that never fails is that people who know me will call and ask - can you give me the latest on the storm?  I always laugh on the inside because I'm always tempted to tell them to tune in at 6 PM!

And that's the other side of the coin: most reporters, whether they are on the air or at the supermarket, don't mind telling you what's going on!  So the next time you see a reporter stand in front of Narragansett Bay with the wind blowing through their hair and completely soaked, just remember, it may not seem that way, but they're okay with it!

Also, here's a pretty honest video report... its all about the numbers!

Why reporters need to "Bag" everyone that is out and about when they are also out on the street is Bloody annoying as well:dodgy:

Supposed to be just a few showers (in theory) up here on a couple of days next week RG so your pea pod should be fine.

It rained here all day yesterday (25km north of Coffs Harbour) this morning it seems to have eased a bit but the wind has picked up. Hopefully what's left of Debbie is finally on its way back out to sea.

We had rain and winds yesterday here at Redcliffe with very strong winds about 7pm last night.

I had to go to Redcliffe Hospital to pick up my daughter (RN on duty yesterday) at 7pm, trees were down and entrance to hospital and some roads blocked by fallen trees and branches.

Clean up today, fees branches in my yard but we did not get what others up north had.

My thoughts are with them all.

From today's Sydney Morning Herald;
''Thinking back a few years, living in Queensland, I remember cyclone Doris. I was ready for it but my wife was not. When the wind reached a screaming pitch with the trees snapping and threshing, the horizontal streaming rain, flying roofing iron and destroyed fences as well as the unnerving soundlevels, my wife was rooted to the spot. She stared and stared through the glass of the window. Immovable, with her nose pressed to the window pane, the stark fear in her eyes will stay with me for ever. Fortunately, as the eye of the storm arrived and the winds temporarily lessened, I was able to open the door and let her in.'' Bill Leigh, West Pennant Hills.

I know many people suffered huge loss of property, and some the loss of loved ones, but I couldn't help laughing at that. Bill Leigh has a wicked sense of humor

just booked to go to airlie beach to help out at my sisters place to tidy up.
they are out of town on acreage, the house is fine cause bro in law bolted everything down and exceeded building code, the house backs up to a hill which may have helped, surrounded by trees, not anymore ... all shredded and quite a few knocked over.
so i'm glamping for the week as they have no power only a small generator.
still i'll get fed and have a bed :D

Good on you,i have some friends up that way, their main problem at the moment is snakes, hundreds of the things which makes cleaning up that much harder.

Bro in law did not mention this , he's used to it also might have a shotty at hand

Just make lots of noise and most snakes will usually bugger off :ok:
Why is it that when most people encounter snakes they just Have to kill them ?
The chances of getting bitten when taking to them with a shovel or a broom are pretty good So it is best to leave them alone, They will be doing their level best to stay out of your way anyway.
Title: RE: Cyclone Debbie QLD
Post by: robbiegal on April 04, 2017, 11:01:59 AM
i suppose it depends on the numbers of the snakes and where they are
hopefully it is mostly the river/water snakes that have been flushed out - they are quite prevalent up that way and they are very shy animals

you'll soon find out mate and work around it
but golly - i'd be shaking out the old sleeping bag before bed time
probably have a night light , movement sensor light, fire place, cats, dogs .... just a few bits of added security

no wait
i'd be sleeping in the house - buggar the glamping!!!!! ha ha
let the B-I-L sleep in the tent if you are free labour visiting

it is a nice time of the year to be here, the weather is great, heaps better than sydney atm.
been getting stuck into cleaning up at sisters place. NO snakes but heaps of jolly green ants :@ bloody things are everywhere even acting like drop bears. they only got power back on the weekend, then we had no phone/internet for 2 days till we realised we broke the line when extracting a tree stump :(
progress is ok even with chainsaw1 started playing up then chainsaw2 decided to do same, then a hydraulic hose decided to bust on the digger... still 17 loads of trees etc off to the tip in 3 days.... we're buggered , still more to do
funny .. appetite has picked up and lost weight at the same time

I'm exhausted just reading all that
Do be careful with underground lines etc
Sounds very pioneer days ... no power no phone and all round hard yakka
I am allergic to those mongrel  green ants - I get swelling as large as the palm of my hand where they bite and boy it gets painful
Could try vinegar to repellent them just spray it dire tly on them
I just read the hubby your story
My hubby reckons they don't hurt much .....  I reckon he's fibbing

Broke open a greenants nest today to disperse them as the play havoc
with my fruit trees and had them biting my hand and running up my arm.
They dont bother me too much any more .Just have to swipe them off before
they all get a chance to bite
