How's everyone going with noodling the key dates for 10c coins? I'm now up to 11,478 (or $1147.80 worth of) 10c coins, and this is what I've found:
1985: 1
2011: 12
1991: 15
1997: 16
1972: 19
Why is the 1985 10c so scarce compared to the other key dates? I always knew it would be tough to find in circulation, but this is getting ridiculous! Has anyone else had better luck? :dontknow:
The 1985 10c is a Mint Set Only coin, Mintage of 170,000.
It is highly unlikely that you will find one of these in circulation
Page 136 of the 22 nd edition of Maccas says 2,100,000 were circulated as well. I always thought they were mint sets.
The 1985 10c coin aren't mint set only coin. I have found a lot (with a lot of searching) in circulation.
Good work with the 2011's Herc!
I don't noodle them much at all, but from the ones I've done I've never found a 2011.
Keep it up! :good:
I have three* make that five 1985 and have never sighted a 2011!
*Edit. I forgot about the two sets I have been making up and only looked at my spares bag. Silly me. :s
I don't buy 10¢ (or 5¢ either) for noodling but just put any from change in a container and, when it is full, noodle for any worth keeping and cash in the rest.

Nope. '86 and '87 were, however.
I have only found 1 x 2011, remember a while back I thought it was the 2012 one that was scarce , and I have 1 x 1972 the others I have never kept .
RAM site has the 1985 at 2 million and the 2011 at 1.7

In the last edition of Macka's on one page it states MSO and yet on the next page it states 2 million minted for circulation for the 1985 10c:dash1:
2 mill it is then :ok:
2 mill is still a rather low mintage and explains why they are "Tough" to find.
Maccas is talking about the one with the Arnold Machin portrait. The one with the Raphael Maklouf portrait was circulated, but only a very small number of them. :ok:

That is odd because the coins in the 1985 Mint set all have the Maklouf obverse.

Nevertheless, it's listed in the section for the Arnold Machin portrait. However, I'm beginning to think that that line's a mistake, because it doesn't appear in the 2014 edition, and it doesn't appear for any of the other denominations.

That's what I've got in the Decimal Mintages PDF, yeah.
Old Mate Greg is a tricky old Bugger :laugh2::angel:
2011 is scarce I've only found 2 in circulation
It's been a few years since i noodled 10 cent pieces my last effort was $400 worth , was only looking for errors but did keep any 2011 i found and ended up with 29 . RAM must have sent most of them to Adelaide .
This year I have searched $3444 10c and have found;
1972 10c x 75
1991 10c x 49
1997 10c x 59
1985 10c x 16
2011 10c x 45
2016 DA 10c x 98
Some are in better condition than others!
Thanks, BJW. That's exactly the sort of information I was looking for. I guess I'll just have to keep searching for the 1985 ones. :good:
AussieSilver, I think the strike rate for the 2011 10c would have been much higher several years ago, regardless of where you lived, because fewer would have been removed from circulation, and those that were left wouldn't have been diluted by the 2012-2016 ones. :ok:
I only keep stats on varieties but I remember finding a few 2011 10c pieces in 2011-2012 and I've seen a small number since then. Since 1999 I've seen two or three 1985 10c pieces though, and I always look out for them.
I have yet to find a 2011 10¢ but have several each of the other 'scarce' years.
I found another 1985 10c today, bringing my overall total to three from $1296. I also found a 1997 10c and three 1991s, which brings their overall totals to 14 and 15, respectively. This is an unusually large number of key dates to find within a single $48 batch, so I'm very excited by this. The 1985 10c is in better condition than the first two, and is only surpassed by the one Jeff sent me. My overall total for 2011 remains at 12, while 1972 increases to 22. :yahoo:
Great stuff Hercules :ok:
Pedro
You're going well Herc! Great result with the 2011's, they're very hard to come across.

I gave a couple to Jeff in exchange for a 1985 10c and a 1972 5c, so I've only get 10 left now. I just hope there are a lot more out there, because I'd love to corner the market on them.
"Swapsies" is the go.
