Title: 1931 Penny..PMD?
Post by: Basil on February 12, 2017, 09:36:38 AM
This Penny went thru Ebay yesterday,i was going to throw a bid in for interest sake and have a closer look but got home too late.
The depression looks like it may have been on the Planchet before minting unless the "PMD er" was very clever.I saw a similar coin on Ebay many years ago,may be the same one.

This 1931 penny looks like it has taken a hit from a pellet fired from an air rifle.
These projectiles are hollow and tend to flatten out on impact,
This would account for the outer "Rings" on the affected area and also account for the bulge on the obverse.

Yeah, strong possibility,i had the instinct that heat has been applied somewhere along the line.

Having noodled all sorts of weird and wonderful coins, I think it's definitely PMD, but I have no idea what caused it. Hence, I'm inclined to believe Trout's explanation until someone comes up with a better one.
