This one is a bit interesting. At this stage I'm leaning towards a planchet that was damaged prior to being struck.
Notes:
The thickness of the coin is no greater at the groove & displaced metal section.
The centre of the milling in the "VOID" seems slightly burred in the centre three milling sections. (see pics 4,5 & 6).
A secondary "flat spot" with no burring on the milling is present just before the first E of ELIZABETH (see last pic).
No flattening of the milling appears evident.
The plethora ....

Gee that's a tough one Uni and probably lean toward PMD sorry, but I could be wrong. See what Mark and others think :)
I'd call this as pre-strike damage.
It looks like a hard enough hit to raise some metal which was then folded over when struck.
To me, the sharp edges across the milling are the giveaway that this isn't PMD, but an actual flaw.
I am not sure what to make of this.
If the damage or indent was there prior to being struck then I imagine that the pressure applied when being struck would have forced the metal into the collar, Leaving NO dent.
Maybe a planchet flaw that has been folded over that would explain the missing metal on the edge and the extra metal adjacent to the indent.
Or it could simply be that a small piece of metal has been shaved off and has not completely been removed from the coin and has been flattened down over the last 33 years of circulation.
I think that the planchet flaw is probably the most likely scenario :ok:

I have lots of these dents, including UNC ones I pulled from mint sacks. None with the folded metal though, but the point is dents DO come through the minting process.

I have no doubt that they do But that doesn't explain the extra metal adjacent to the "Dent" on Uni's coin
