I've just about put the lid on adding all the new issues that have come out in the past year or so to the 23rd edition. Believe it or not, I think I might have overlooked a few issues.
Can anyone let me know if the Perth Mint produced any coins for the recent Rio Olympics?
I also haven't come across the usual Christmas PNC issue?
Can anyone help, please
Cheers
Greg
Hi Greg,
As far as the Perth Mint Christmas PNCs go, examples from Ebay are attached below. In both cases a Tuvalu $1 is included in the PNC.
Limited Edition version of 300:

Not yet Mike I think Greg is aiming for March release
I don't recall Perth doing any rio olypic coins. Ram did $2 on behalf of Woolworths and the did Australian Olympic team coins for the aoc. Perth did nothing
I don't envy your job, Greg. Keeping up with the mint product is a full-time job. I gave up trying to keep up with just the dollar coins!
Eric
I reckon Greg should release two books - one for circulating coins and one for uncirculating coins. That would make it so much easier for me to find things. :)
Yes there's only so much you can jam into a pocket guide but trying to do two books might be a bit of a mission and not really worth the time or trouble.
Actually he is trying to keep up with two mints. RAM and Perth. I reckon they should be separated in the book. Would be good to split it into four sections. 1 - Pre-Decimal Coins, 2 - RAM Decimal including RAM related PNC's, 3 - Perth Stuff including Perth Mint PNC's & 4 - Banknotes.
I look forward to the next edition regardless.
Cheers Mike

Section 2 should be split into two subsections: 2a - Circulating Coins and 2b - NCLT. That will make it easy for noodlers like me. :)

Good idea Herc. Spink have just done that with their catalogue, and the Brits have far fewer mint products than we do.

I would think that we wold have more Mint product in Aus than any other country
New name for Granny Bait ........ Mint Product..... ;)

The annual Mint Sets are "Mint Product" and so are the various Rolls of coins that RAM only makes available to their "Pet" dealers as well
Yes you are right Trout ..... I wasn't thinking of that though, i was thinking about all the other stuff that comes out.
Mike.

Yep, Gannybait :laugh2:
I like the idea of two books.
One for those coins which can be obtained at face value, and one for the rest.
There might still be some grey areas, like the early $5 coins which were available at fv but only on request from specific banks (although I did get a couple of 1988 PH in change in North Sydney at the time), but overall it should be a simple demarcation.
John
Might not be as simple as you think ... Some coins that were available at face value are no longer available at face value especially if they are in mint condition, from a mint pack or a proof pack.
A better demarcation would be coins intended to be circulating and coins intended to be Non-Circulating.
Cheers Mike

I'd love to see how this works with the 1983-1985 20c, the 1988 20c, the 1992 MoR $1, the 2012 Red Poppy $2 and the 2016 Olympic/Paralympic $2 coins. These are the biggest grey areas I can see, which will almost certainly require a footnote. :)
Just my thoughts, decimal should be maybe mintage and issue price, with a blank space left to insert your own secondary market price and grade you purchased it for. Predecimal would have 3 grades priced, F and below would be a blank space, VF average current price, EF average current price, Unc average current price, and then another blank space for your price for whatever else grade, the in between/Almost etc.
Gold would pretty much be the same with as predecimal with the blank space to insert your own grade and price. Like I say just a thought. :)
With pictures of course. :)
Good ideas but our "pocket" book is getting bigger and bigger and way to big for my shallow pockets, that's why I have a backpack to take to the shows with me :)
I'd love a pocket guide that excluded Perth Mint products wouldn't that be nice

I would imagine that every dealer at a show would have a copy of the latest Macca's on hand, I doubt that they would refuse you if you asked to borrow it for a second
After the dramatic price drops I believe that a lot of dealers were hiding their maccas as the catalog prices suddenly went down and the dealers didn't have 1. The time go change prices 2. Time to work put their losses on the price drops. It caught a lot of people out.including myself.
word is many dealers will no longer stock macca's
I didn't understand all the fuss until I went to list a couple of my coins and the price drop was a real shock. Then I realized what the dealers were on about as they had customers arguing prices against the new book. And a lot of those were the expensive coins of course. Or rather, previously expensive!
QuoteI believe that a lot of dealers were hiding their maccas as the catalog prices suddenly went down
I hope you are joking about that RG :dodgy:
You have to remember it wasn't Greg Macdonald that was the CAUSE of the price drops, All he did was to Honestly reflect the values that were being achieved at that time.
Of course the dealers didn't like the price listings in the new edition because prior to the last edition dealers were buying cheaply and selling at the inflated prices in the older edition of Macca's.
I highly doubt that the majority of dealers were unaware that the market had taken a turn for the worse and that the new values came at a complete Shock to them.
I don't know the reason why the downturn, was it the RCC debacle, an economic downturn or the slabbed coin bubble had burst.
It could have been anything But one thing I do know is that Greg Macdonald did all of us collectors a great service by telling us "As it Is" with the new price reports in the last edition.
As far as I am concerned all the complaints about the last edition were attempts to "Shoot the Messenger" :ok:
Thanks for that explanation Trout. When I was preparing to buy my first copy of Maccas, someone told me that the 2015 edition was unreliable, and that I should get the 2014 edition instead. I ended up buying both editions, but I never understood what all the fuss was about. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I never would have noticed the differences on my own. :good:
Every dealer and real collector always buys the Maccas Guide
For FS the book is only a guide with updates in new editions of product and the prices listed are just an indication of what they may be valued at
Same with Renniks
There are pretty big price differences in the two books
I'm just saying what I have seen
I do believe that people were caught out
My own dealer had customers accosting him and waving the latest book at him telling him he was trying to cheat them
Didn't mean he bought cheaper and was ripping people off at all
He told us that he made sales to keep the peace and lost money
Then retracted the stock as be became aware of the price drops as he'd paid more to buy the stock in the first place
I have customer that always have the new maccas on hand when buying but have the old one on hand when selling. I had one cheeky customer bring both books in. One in each back pocket. He sold first then used proceeds to buy. You can guess which book he had out when negotiating each deal.

It would not surprise me in the least to find out that some of the less savoury Dealers are doing exactly the same thing
As a buyer I NEVER rely or use Macca's to determine a value. I use Bluesheet or eBay sold listings as a guide :good:
Reality is on low value items maccas or renniks is good enough. A price goes up you have to work on confirmed sales as the market changes all the time which no book can keep up with. As a dealer I look at maccas and renniks at least 3 times a day so dealers and collector can not live without one or the other
