Title: 1966 concept for the two cent piece
Post by: LooseChange on December 22, 2016, 06:46:06 PM
Interesting coin.

Quote from: facebookIn honour of the illustrious career of Stuart Devlin AO, the Mint is releasing a coin featuring the never-before-struck 'Kangaroo and Joey' based on Devlin's original 1966 concept for the two cent piece. This iconic image has stood the test of time, a testament to the immunity of great design and a true hallmark of Devlin's enduring appeal. This coin will be available to purchase ($12.50 each) in February however expressions of interest are now open via our eshop to receive further information about the availability of this coin: https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/forms/sd-register.html

I was waiting for a thread on this. I think it looks pretty neat and I have put in an expression of interest.

Me too. Are there also second designs from SD for the other coins?

If so why not make it a set?

"Stuart Devlin's proposed coin designs included a cockatoo and a marlin"

I saw some of the proposed designs that didn't make it from various artists displayed at the mint in Canberra..i would like one of each for sure.

i have been told that Andor Meszaros had it nailed except that he didn't follow the requested theme for one of the denominations and lost his tender altogether

although i prefer the Devlin designs anyways  - not as busy as Mesaros's ones

Looks good. But I agree with you I like Devlin's design better.

yes that is the set
and I vaguely recall that the shield that included the kangaroo and emu were missing from the designs ... something like that
Title: RE: 1966 concept for the two cent piece
Post by: trout on December 23, 2016, 03:02:59 PM
This design didn't make it into production for some very good reasons.
Firstly the Frilled Lizard design simply blows this one out of the water IMHO and as there were already 2 coins with better kangaroo designs on them (50 $1) having another coin with these spring loaded rodents on them would be pretty silly

Here's the plaster of another of Stuart Devlins designs, a concept of 'Koalas" for the 1966 decimal design competition -5 cent.

I like the educational bonus with the designs showing what each animal may eat.... the koala above eating gum-leaves.. the platypus with yabby... kookaburra with snake.. i love it.

QuoteWhat's the mintage?

That is anyone's guess But after the fiasco with the mintage of the HM Birthday coins I imagine that the mintage of this coin will be pretty generous.
They have the numbers of the expressions of interest to work on so I don't think that they will stuff this one up :ok:

I just ignore the mintage now. It cannot be trusted.

QuoteI just ignore the mintage now. It cannot be trusted.

The HM Birthday coin mintages are the first that I am aware of where the mintage for an NCLT offering has been manipulated and changed.
In every other case that I am aware of the mintages given by RAM for NCLT issues is the maximum and in many cases the actual mintage is less because the maximum mintage wasn't sold.
The Masterpieces in Silver sets are a great example of this.
The 1992 Masterpieces in Silver "Royal Ladies" Set was also  a Made to order issue and I haven't heard of any shenanigans regarding this made to order mintage.
I am almost certain that after the HM Birthday coins debacle RAM will be very careful Not to make that sort of mistake in the future.
Title: RE: 1966 concept for the two cent piece
Post by: LooseChange on February 03, 2017, 07:31:41 AM
Im really not trying to discredit all mintages with my comment.. my perspective when purchasing has just changed to not consider low mintages a selling point anymore. Im not sure the mint has actually acknowledged a problem with the HM 90th bday mintage? The last time i read anything they were denying and doubling-down on claimed mintage.

Looking at all the different listings it's obvious the RAM doesn't give a hoot about copyright with them all using the ram's generic pic's. I think this coin will be a pretty good money maker for the mint but hopefully I might get one for face value one day, but then how do I pay for it, maybe I could exchange one of my old two cents for a new one :)

:laugh2: Yeah that's about right trout  Well what I was thinking was that I could take some of my old 1 & 2's back to the bank (where I got most from anyway) and exchange them for one of these new one's as people get rid of dad and pop's collection as I think that's what happens when I get them ATM. I go in and ask get any paper notes or old coins and sometimes they say yes we have 3 or 4 dollars in copper so I say hand it over and they're happy to get rid of them as it saves them paperwork sending them back.

Hey isn't there was a PDF document with all the upcoming designs in 2017? They have to include that in there right?

I was quite excited about the 2c when I first saw it. But now after a month I have cool on it. They waited too long. You want to get them when they are hot and horny for it.

What is it with everyone ordering in 3s? I ordered 3 for myself and 3 for someone else, and then I come on here and find out that everyone else has ordered 3. There must be something about us humans that makes us love the number 3! :laugh2:

Anyway, has anyone else noticed that they listed the wrong metal for these coins on the RAM website? It says they're made out of aluminium bronze, but isn't that what they make the $1 and $2 coins out of? Weren't the 1c and 2c coins made out of copper instead?

I'd also like to thank Trout for his suggestion that I add some of the Changeover baggies onto every order I make. You can rest assured that there'll now be fewer left for everyone else. :D

Now, I just have to hope that Trout is wrong about these concept designs becoming a new form of granny bait. :s

THE PACKAGING SAYS THEY ARE BRONZE (i thought they were copper)
Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of copper, commonly with about 12% tin and often with the addition of other metals (such as aluminium, manganese, nickel or zinc)

I got a call back from the Mint - bronze and yes 88% copper with no exact % for the other alloy metals
didn't expect a call mind you
anyways the webpage has been corrected now

Stuart Devlin - Exhibition Coin

To coincide with the Royal Australian Mint's exhibition Stuart Devlin - The Designer with the Midas Touch, this special release offers a unique glimpse into what might have been. Featuring one of Devlin's original proposed sketches for the two cent coin, it is a testimony to a designer whose mind has always been overflowing with ideas. Coin collectors, history buffs, art and design enthusiasts will enjoy adding this curious piece to their collections.

Denomination  Metal   Diameter  Mass  Finish
Mintage
They have corrected:
2c      Bronze     21.59      5.20g   Uncirculated   30 000

My coins finally arrived today :yahoo:
They are in Great condition for a change But oddly they don't have an "SD" on the reverse design that I can see.
This strikes me as being a bit Odd considering that these were issued to celebrate Stuart Devlin's work.
On a side note, I ordered a baggy of the changeover 50c coins with these and RAM also sent one of the empty changeover folder with it :good:

QuoteWhat is it with everyone ordering in 3s? I ordered 3 for myself and 3 for someone else, and then I come on here and find out that everyone else has ordered 3.

I have found a small "wrinkle/crease" by the rim on one of my coins.. i only noticed it because there was a weird "dot" on that particular coin. I will get some photos up when i can.

Just received mine today didn't take tooooooo long   :whistle2:
Bought the book as well. Page 20, left hand side down the bottom, on the 5 cent frilled neck lizard. The echidna was was chosen instead on the 5 cent and the lizard for the 1 cent piece. :dodgy: The plats in the opposite page has 3 fingers only on the plaster design.
Bit disappointed no pics of the 10 cent.

No idea on either sorry LC, the rim is interesting and could well be a fault in the die where it's split and now slightly out of alignment and the dot could be anything. Can you tell if the dot is in the metal or has been stamped in

I dont know AJ, it looks like a blemish... is best i can describe. I might have to try to recreate it on another coin.

The dot seems like corrosion to me at a guess.. but i really don't know. Maybe a tiny drop of something got on the coin. Anyone else find dots like these on their 2c coins?

I have tried googling creases or wrinkles on coins but didn't get anywhere. I'm really not knowledgeable enough of the minting process to guess at whats going on with the crease.

Both images of the same coin for what its worth.

Great photos LC. :good:

I'm leaning towards the rim being a "rim burr", but as AJ said I think Mark would certainly know. There's a thread on one of my coins where Mark provides a link to rim burrs on google.

With regards to the dot, I'm not sure how the coins are packaged (since I didn't get one) but perhaps it's some sort of adhesive that's gone astray?

Thanks for the suggestion of a burr, gave me a new search term to try... pre-strike issue with the planchet could be what caused the end result of a crease appearance.

The packaging is the press-fit sort of capsule common with the coins presented on a card.
