Title: NCLT Winners
Post by: trout on December 09, 2016, 08:52:45 PM
There is a bit of doom and gloom getting around the Traps in regard to NCLT or what some of us refer to as Grannybait, So lets have a look at the NCLT success stories.
As many of us enjoy this area of collecting it is nice to know that there are certain Grannybait issues that are now worth more than we paid for them when issued :yahoo:

Off the top of my head the 2000 Victoria Cross $1 coin comes to mind along with the 2001 full set of federation proofs.
I know that there are many many more so add what you consider to be NCLT Winners here :good:

The 2012 Mint set with the colored 50 cents is selling for over $100 .
I remember buying 10 of these, I kept 2 sets and used the rest of them as gifts
The 2000 proof set with the colored 50c Millennium coin is also valued way above it's issue price.

Although not an official coin the Swan/Goose dollar meets all the criteria for grannybait in Spades.
With an issue price of $13.50 these are now valued at $1500+
The 2008 Saint Mary Mackillop ali bronze Dollar is another quiet achiever :good:

The same design was used on a 20c coin.
I can't remember the date or where I have put the coin :dash1:

What about the Overprinted Folder(s) for HMAS Sydney 11 coin, "S" Mint Mark and the overprinted folder for the Eureka Stockade, "E" Counterstamped coin, issued to VIP's at the Eureka Centre in Ballarat some years ago.

I am a bit surprised that nobody has mentioned the 1966 Proof set yet, Or the other earlier dated Proof sets.
These are very popular and sell for many times their issue price :good:

I've gone through some of Eric's old coin magazines, and if you picked any of these up in the 80's you wouldn't be any better off, you would probably struggle to make your money back on them (and if you take inflation since then into it, you'd have made a loss)

ALL the Proof sets from the eighties had Huge Mintages.
From 1966-1974 the mintages were quite small 10.000ish and from 1975-1979 the mintages ranged from 55,006 in 1977 and 21,200 in 1976.
In the Eighties the mintages ranged fro 60,000 odd to over 100,000.
This would account for them being  low value sets.

I recently had eight of the Gold 1/10th oz coins graded and they look great in with my 25mm Silver proofs that are in a couple of slab albums.
Most of these I managed to buy at considerably less that the issue price so they can't be considered as a Grannybait "winners" But I like them regardless :)

Sorry, my comment was in reference to the 1966 proof set, not the ones from the 80s. If I recall they were selling for $400 or so even back then.

I think it would be extremely "tough" to find a Good set now for $400.
Most of the sets now suffer from various issues due to the set being kept in that disastrous blue box and this makes it very hard to find pristine coins now :ok:

Although strictly not NCLT,  during the 2000's I went through a spate of relatives' weddings of the next generation down - nephews, nieces etc.

For each of them I gave them a wedding proof set.   In every case the wedding sets have doubled in value and in some cases, especially now that NGC recognises them as SP, they have tripled in value.

Similarly now with children arriving, baby proof sets have turned out to be similarly increasing in value, particularly the earlier ones with the Gumnut or Koala themes.

Certainly better presents than kitchen appliances or silver spoons or tankards!

Cheers

QuoteAlthough strictly not NCLT
The Wedding Sets are definitely NCLT, Just the same as a Proof set for the same year would be and yes the original format sets before they were produced in Proof format have doubled their value.
However as they are the ONLY way to obtain circulation design Specimen coins for the years 2002-2009 I think that they are very much a "Sleeper" because the Majority of collectors have absolutely NO idea Yet that these coins are indeed Different and in decimal terms are a tiny mintage as well.
It will be interesting to see how these perform in the future :ok:

Keep them coming guys, Most of My Grannybait coins are Not "Winners" But it is assuring that it is Not all Doom and Gloom where NCLT coins are concerned :yahoo:

The "In come the Dollars/Cents" sets were winners even before they were issued :)

How about 1997 $1 Kingsford-Smith (Large) Combined NPA/RAM issue with $20 note - Mintage 2,480?

Or

2000   $1 Last Anzacs PNC, same as the 1999 coin but dated 2000 - Mintage 47,830.

These are all still on my want list from when I gave up on collecting decimals.

2007   1 Ounce Silver Kangaroo Rolf Harris
2008   1 Ounce Silver Kangaroo Reg Mombassa
2009   1 Ounce Silver Kangaroo Ken Done

That is probably the most expensive 25mm silver proof that I added to my PCGS set registry besides the ones I had to buy the various Silver proof sets for and I bought 2 of them to pick the best one out.
They were both much of a muchness and the one I sent in for grading came back PR68DCAM which is not fantastic But acceptable :)
