Title: 2017 Mint/Proof sets
Post by: trout on September 29, 2016, 06:50:55 PM
Ok its getting close to when the new sets for next year are released from RAM.
I think it is usually end of October-November that these come out.
Any ideas about a theme that will be used this year or maybe some sort of "special" finish on a coin in the sets ??
We've had the coloured coins, the gold plated coins and the different metal content coins in the Mint sets so far, I wonder what "Gimmick" will be used for next year??
Is there any "Insider" information about these sets floating around out there ?:)

You are being watched :Alvarin_33:

I am thinking that RAM is looking for ideas for the 50c coins as the size of the coin makes it ideal for commemorative designs , Maybe another Tin Full .
In 1967 patterns were made of the new shaped 50c  then maybe that is a possibility as a 50 year commemorative coin.

It would be rather nice just to have the Sets in regular circulating designs/finishes/metals for a change so that we don't have to buy every single set produced just for that 1 or 2 different coins that they normally each have in them:ok:

You forget that the RAM's out to make a profit. Doing what you suggest would hurt their bottom line. However, I like the idea of a 99c coin. It'll save people lots of money whenever they go shopping!

We already have a 90c coin, Every time you spend a dollar its buying power is only 90c because 10c of it is taxed via GST at the point of sale :dodgy:

I wouldn't mind seeing set of reverse proof coins (same finish as the HM Birthday coins) for the 2017 circulating designs and a return to the Specimen finish for the Wedding Sets instead of just duplicating the proof coins for this set as usual:good:

Pretty sure there'll be no special design this year. All standards like 2010/2011.

I was hoping based on determinations that they would be Solar System themed originally.

RAM has been able to put some sort of "Spin" on the annual sets for the last few years making us have to get all the different sets because of one or two different being in each different set.
I can't see them doing differently this year.

I haven't seen anything about the 2017 sets yet.
Maybe RAM is waiting until the new year to issue these this time around due to the Queens advanced age ?

I reckon they've got brain fatigue :kez_11: from trying to keep us all in the dark.

Does their left hand know what their right hand is doing? I very much doubt it as there's no evidence to support it.

They may opt for a regular set as 2016 will be a hard act to follow and surely they will take into account collector/buyer fatigue?  It is all getting just a bit to silly with such a proliferation of designs. Although they will drag put the War issues for a couple  more years.  At least pit imported coin designers appreciate our history.

Have a look at Currency Determination Number 4 from October 11th 2016 - there is even a Richie Benaud 50 cents!

There is also an emphasis on War Medals and Awards.

Big question is will the 2017 Australian coins use the 5th portrait of QEII? Jody Clark is the designer and the UK 2015 coins all have it. Although some of their 2015 coins have the old obverse too.

In 2014 I bought my 2015 Mint and Proof sets from a dealer on 26/10 and in 2015 I bought the 2016 sets from the same dealer on 14/11.
Do we appear to be getting the sets a bit later each year, or is it just a case of when they are ready they become available??
We usually have some idea about the content of the annual sets by now though

I would imagine that this year would have had to have been one of RAM's biggest years as far as the array of different coins produced.
Maybe next year they will concentrate on quality instead of just churning out stuff for the sake of it.
There were some nice offerings this year But there was also a lot of "Junk" produced as well.
It would be nice just to see a few Quality sets and a limited number of relevant commemoratives instead a plethora of garbage that you have to sort out the "Gems" from :ok:

It is interesting to note that there is NO obverse image on the sets listing , The listing does state that the IRB design is used for these coins though.
Will the 2017 circulating coins still have the IRB obverse design or is there to be a new design on these ??

Looks like the RAM are sticking with the 4th Portrait of the Queen. I really thought they might have switched to the 5th Portrait as done by Jody Clark on the UK Decimal coins since 2015.

Interesting thing with the UK coins is that they switched half way through the year so you can get both effigies in the UK 2015 coins. All are available in circulation. The £1 & £2 coins do have different reverses though.

Maybe the RAM will stick with the IRB Effigy until Lizzy pops her clogs and then they can just go straight to the first portrait of King Charles III .... Although there is a rumour circulating in the UK that Prince William will be the next King as Charles is contemplating stepping aside for him.

Interesting times - Cheers Mike

This is so disappointing. What happens if the queen dies before the Jody Clark portrait gets used on our coins? I know that if I were Jody Clark, I'd be furious at the current state of affairs. Imagine going to all that trouble to design a portrait that doesn't even get used outside your own country!

If they switch to Jody Clark design (looks like they will very soon, otherwise why bother making IRB the theme for 2017 sets?) then the mintage would be split between the two and making them scarce? Is that the theory?

I know what they are saying but they could have picked a better word...
•"Effigy" Oxford dictionary (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/effigy)
•"Effigy" Merriam-Webster dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/effigy)
A strong negative feeling to that word. Makes me think of Guy Fawkes, bonfires and such.
How about "portrait". "image", "likeness", "bust".....the list of 'friendly' words is quite long.

Don't get your hopes up Mate.
RAM tend to use that double bar image quite freely but the coins that are listed don't have the double bar when you get them.
Funnily enough the 50.50 proof coin which Does have a double bar didn't have the double bar image in the promotion :dash1:

What's the EU got to do with it? I thought we were part of the Commonwealth, and as such, we always used the same portrait of the queen as Britain. If you don't like that, then go and call for a republic, because this is one of the consequences of being part of the Commonwealth.

I respectfully disagree with you Brismike. Hercules asked a general question to the forum and received in my opinion a civil reply from another member of the forum.

Hercules Wrote:
Does anyone else think it's weird how 20 months after a new effigy is unveiled in Britain, we spend all our time celebrating the old effigy instead of embracing the new one?

RG Wrote:
not at all
we are Australia not England and not in the EU

Hercules seemed to not like this reply and took it a level that was both off topic and rude towards a well respected members opinion.
Why bite at another's opinion, or ask a question if you are not prepared to hear an answer, even if its not to the liking of ones views? The question was not about whether Australia should be a republic but a canvasing of thoughts about the length of time an effigy took to appear on our coins and the "celebration" (whatever that is) of an older and our current version. RG gave an answer as well as an explanation behind it. She didn't deserve to receive his reply to her opinion.

Just saw a deal from Downies - get mint and proof sets both for $125 (no discount) + $8 shipping. They will throw in a gold plated 1953 penny. Sounds reasonable? Plus a chance to win something that you most likely won't win.

http://www.downies.com/royal-australian-mint-coins/Australia-2017-Proof-and-Mint-Set-with-Free-Gold-Plated-Penny/7588/productview.aspx

Although much rather they give you a plain old penny. It's beautiful just the way it is.

There will be a special $1 coin design with a specific date on it for every day of the year. So there will be 365 sets you have to buy for the dedicated $1 coin collector.

That is too ridiculous to be true! Isn't it?

Next it will be personalised coins (à la numberplates). Or, maybe, send in a picture and get yourself, a loved one or even Donald trump on a coin. Australia Post does that with stamps already.

I am thinking that the 2017 5c may only be available in the Mint and Proof sets next year.
There are a few rumors going around the tracks that the 5c may be taken out of service at some stage and that RAM will cut down on the mintages or not mint any for certain years as there are probably enough of them in circulation for commerce at the moment anyway.
We will just have to wait and see and it won't be the first time a denomination hasn't been minted for a year, There are plenty of "Mint Set Only" years for decimals in the past :ok:

With the $2 coins now in the limelight I would not be surprised at all if the baby sets had a different design $2 coin in them like they did with the dollar coin before.
That way collectors would be enticed to add the baby sets to the shopping list as well as the Mint sets.

A big improvement with the Mint set coins quality and the Proofs are their usual Perfect selves :ok:

Maybe I have been a bit hasty giving the Mint and proof sets the "Thumbs Up".
This is the Dollar coin from the Mint set.
It looks like it has been struck with a rusty die looking at the granulated look of the obverse.
The proof also has "issues" with blurred frosting on the reverse.

The granulation's are over the entire design and not just in the fields.
If just the fields were affected I would  put this down to being a result of using badly prepared planchets But because the entire coin is covered including the Queens face/neck it really does look like a rusty die was used.
All the little "Bumps" on the coin are raised so that indicates that the die is "Pitted" and that condition us usually caused by rust eating away the surface of the die.

Still NO 2017 baby sets up on the RAM site yet.
It seems unusual that the Mint and proof sets haven't got a "Special" coin in them this year So I am thinking that the Baby sets will include the 2017 "Theme" coin as I doubt very much that the marketing team will want the baby sets to include exactly the same coins as the Mint and Proof sets, RAM would loose revenue if this was the case.

I shall wait until the 2017 Baby Sets are released, 05 Dec 2016, and go in and compare my set with those that Downies have not sold.

If the new set has a mirror like finish rather than the "orange skin" effect, does one keep both sets or swap for a mirror finish set?

Having an affected set in hand, it's not the "orange peel" effect. Being struck from a rusty pitted die would cause them to look the way they do.

Kinda makes me wonder if they do in fact make 'new' dies each year.  Maybe they've got a heap all made at the same time in advance , mass produced but with no fate, and all they have to do is add the date each year.  Might explain how supposedly 'new' dies are already rusty and pitted. :dodgy:

Or they don't want to go to  the expense of making 'new' dies each year, so they re-purpose some old rusty dies that have been kicking around for years and just change the date. QEII is not getting any younger, so who knows what they're capable of.

That doesn't explain why the reverses on the 2016 changeover Mint sets were pretty ordinary initially.

I just received an email "Flyer" with the 2017 Baby sets in it Circ and Proof and they both have the standard design coins in them.
There is NO obverse image for either set but the Proof set is described as having an IRB obverse .

Looks like the RAM has dumped the Alphabet $1 coins then for 2017 now they have come to their senses and put the normal $1 coin back in the Baby Sets.
I wonder what the mintages will be for the 2016 versions of those Alphabet coins will be ..... ?  Very very low I suspect.

Cheers Mike

Nah, The ABC coins are back for 2017 with the same old tired designs with a different date on them.
I think the dedicated 25mm collectors are well and truly sick of these things by now.

Hi Trout ... Yes looks like I jumped the gun. Just after I sent that post above I got a flyer email from the RAM telling me all about them. These are the RAM's words ...

Depicting some of Australia's most beloved animals and inspired by our ABCs, the 2017 Alphabet Collection simply spell fun!
Featuring a range of different finishes and a new colour palette for 2017, there is something for every taste.

So looks like there might be some slight differences apart from the date ... Still not tempted?

Cheers Mike

By the looks of the coins in the 2017 Baby and the Baby proof sets there is NO need to have to get both lots of sets this year :yahoo:
I may get one of the standard Baby sets because traditionally the coins in the Baby sets are in better Nick than the normal Mint sets.
At $45 a pop they are a bit of a rip off though.

So has anyone taken their grainy coins out of packaging for a better look . Got mine today and look the same but on closer inspection it looks like its just the plastic not the coins ?

You are right AussieSilver, The plastic itself is granulated.:ok:
Probably designed to hide all the scrapes and dings on the coins.
I'm not sure which I prefer , the bubbly look or the bashed look

I just ordered another year set to replace the one I opened, a Baby set hoping that the coins will be in better condition and another little baggy of the changeover $2 to take advantage of the postage :)

Good job Trout thought you might rip one apart mystery solved :good: although a rusty die variety was starting to sound appealing .

It is odd that the plastic in the packaging has a frosted glass look to it.

The 2017 Baby set arrived today, Exactly the same coins as the Mint Set but at a $20 premium for the same generic token that was used in the 2015 and 2016 sets
I don't intend to bother with the Baby Proof set this year Priced at $25 more that the Same coins in the Proof set but in a different Box.
