$600 worth of $2 coins.
This is what I found:
4x 2011 Elder
3x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 ANZAC (Red)
1x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
1x 2016 Elder
1x 2016 Olympics (Yellow)
Here's yesterday's $600 haul for comparison:
1x 2012 Elder
1x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
2x 2016 Olympics (Green)
Thus, over the last two days (or $1200), I've found:
4x 2011 Elder
1x 2012 Elder
4x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 ANZAC (Red)
2x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
1x 2016 Elder
1x 2016 Olympics (Yellow)
2x 2016 Olympics (Green)
How does this compare with other people's strike rates? :yahoo:

TBH, a pointless question, because these things are really random. You may as well ask about wavy 2's or NCLT or foreign coins.
The coloured coins are things the average punter stashes away. The low mintages are likely not evenly distributed. Both may turn up in numbers in location A and not at all in location B.
I pulled two wavy 2's out of one sack a few years ago. Doesn't mean I'll ever see another one. ;)

It's really not that random. I get my rolls straight from Armaguard, which has a central processing facility in the middle of Brisbane. Coins from all over south-east Queensland get sent there, mixed up, and redistributed. This means that although there are fluctuations from roll to roll, it all balances out over the long run. Any coin circulating within several hundred kilometres of where I live has an equal chance of ending up in one of these rolls and being noodled by me.
Based on my own statistics kept over the last six months, the orange Remembrance Day $2 coin is no more difficult to find in Brisbane than a 1997 10c, and the red ANZAC Day $2 coin is no more difficult to find than a 1972 5c. You can argue all you want with me, but that doesn't change the fact that coloured $2 coins are much more abundant in Brisbane than wavies, incuses, mules, NCLT, and foreign coins (other than NZ).
This is what I've noodled so far out of 264 rolls (worth $13,200):
1x Coronation (purple)
2x Remembrance (green)
3x ANZAC (red)
10x Remembrance (orange)
1x Olympics (black)
1x Olympics (yellow)
2x Olympics (green)
That's 20 coloured coins in total, half of which were orange. Clearly, the orange coin doesn't just appear randomly. It is almost guaranteed to turn up in $3000 worth of $2 coins. I reckon I'll obtain a similar result for the other coloured coins if I keep noodling. :D
Was the 2016 Elder a normal obverse or the cameo one?
Quote from: 'The Basset' pid='98618' dateline='1474597268'Was the 2016 Elder a normal obverse or the cameo one?
Sorry, I meant the normal obverse. When I found this coin, the obverse was facing up, so I saved it right until the very end because I thought it would have colour on it. Then, when I turned it over, I was bitterly disappointed, but since it's only the second one of these I've found to date, I got over the disappointment fairly quickly. ;)

Maybe you were luckier than you think. The RAM lists only the cameo obverse for circulation with the standard big head only made
for the birth set. They have been wrong before. What the RAM says is both varieties being circulated in 5,10,20 and 50 but only the cameo in $1 and $2. All too hard.

The standard 2016 $2 elder has been in circulation for a while.
I managed to get a heap from Aldi from Prosegur rolls.
They may be low mintage as there is a heap of $2 circulating coins this year.

Chances are, the mint simply hasn't updated their website. I'd rather wait for the annual report(s) before jumping to conclusions. However, my gut feeling is that these coins are going to be very common, considering that they felt the need to send them to Brisbane when most other new 2016 coins have gone straight to other states. What we're seeing here is really just the tip of the iceberg. :winkextra:

Absolutely! If there's one thing I've learnt from putting together the PDF's, its that you can't trust ANY information or assumptions until the ink is dry on official documentation. And even then its often incomplete or just plain wrong.
Pretty pathetic, really. :(

I noticed in your PDF that you were unsure what the final mintage of the 2001 $2 coin was. I think it's beyond doubt that the annual report is wrong, and that they were out by one decimal place, just like with the 2014 MoR $1 coin in last year's annual report. Nevertheless, I do think the annual reports are more accurate than the website itself, because the people who put the information on the website sometimes forget that a coin can be minted outside the year it is dated.
Quote from: 'Hercules' pid='98627' dateline='1474613543'I noticed in your PDF that you were unsure what the final mintage of the 2001 $2 coin was.
I leave it in doubt whenever there are two conflicting numbers, because otherwise I'd be as bad as the others, and have a 50% chance of being wrong. No other option when the source data is tainted. :(

I use noodling to determine which figure is correct.
This is what I've found so far:
1998 - 44 (Mintage: 8.7 million)
1999 - 244 (Mintage: 27.3 million)
2000 - 33 (Mintage: 5.7 million)
2001 - 288 (Mintage: ???)
2002 - 232 (Mintage: 29.7 million)
2003 - 97 (Mintage: 13.7 million)
2004 - 141 (Mintage: 20.0 million)
To fill in the unknown figure, I make comparisons. If the mintage of the 2001 $2 coin really was 3.565 million, it ought to be scarcer than 1998 and 2000, and much scarcer than 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
However, that's not what the data shows. It's actually much more common than all of these years, including 1999 and 2002, which had mintages almost 10 times higher than that.
Conversely, if you assume the mintage was 35.6 million, then it ought to be much more common than any of the surrounding years, and that's exactly what my data shows. Hence, it must be the correct figure.
Today I noodled $200 worth of $2 coins:
1 x 2011 Elder
1 x 2012 Remembrance (no colour)
2 x 2016 Olympic (Red)
1 x 2016 Olympic (Black)
2 x 2016 Olympic (Yellow)
3 x 2016 Paralympic
You did very well, Noel, with all those coloured coins. Congratulations! :wavemulticolor:

The Data will be Flawed if the samples are only taken from one City or even State.
It all depends on where and when the coins are distributed , It is a very rare thing that the new coinage is distributed evenly across Australia :ok:
I got a 1941 sixpence and a 1972 5c from $22 of 5c pieces today.
I've also seen another 2015 $10 note a few 2014 $50 notes lately.
WOW
Finding silver other than the round 50c is extremely rare these days .:yahoo:
Well done Mate :good:
Indeed - that's the second in maybe three months. Someone must be feeding them for the fun of it.
Got these after going through $2000 worth of them. Not too bad I reckon... Other finds were some mistrikes and minor rim errors which are not in the photos. Are 2012 standard ones worth keeping?

I used to think so, but I've noodled over 120 of them now, so I only keep the ones that don't have any blemishes. :ok:
That was quite a decent haul for a bag of $2 Herc. I am halfway through my fourth $1 bag for this week and haven't found much at all; one NCLT, mint your own (poor condition) and a few common ones in better than usual condition (not one error so far -bring on the mules or upsets, I say). Not even one rabbit ears!

Haha yea they are indeed quite common for their mintage. I got 8x 2012, 2x 2011 and 2x 2000 ones from that pack.
Had my first serious go at noodling this week and here are the results
11x 2014 Green remembrance $2
13x 2015 Orange Remembrance $2
9x 2012 Remembrance $2 (plain Poppy)
10x 2016 Paralympic $2
10x 2016 Red Olympics $2
12x 2016 Yellow Olympics $2
12x 2016 Green Olympics $2
8x 2016 Black Olympics $2
10x 2016 Blue Olympics $2
2x 2016 Changeover $2
1x 2015 Red Anzac $2 (My first one ever)
But the cream of the crop was 4x 2013 Coronation $2 coins... I've been looking for one for the past few years without any luck but then I get 4 in one day! :yahoo: One is a bit beat up and looks like it has done the rounds but the other 3 are in really good condition!

LucasJ what state are you from
They are excellent results.
Northern NSW (almost on the border) Yeah I was quite surprised also, I doubt I will ever get a result like that again!
I bet someone collected them and then threw them back into circulation, because that is well above my statistical average. I usually only find 5 or 6 coloured coins per $2000, and most of them are Olympic ones nowadays. All the earlier ones are extremely scarce, except for the orange one, which still appears periodically.
QuoteI bet someone collected them and then threw them back into circulation,
:agreed:
Looks like part of a collection "Dump" especially with the 4x Purple stripes in the mix.
Lucas,
How many coins did you search through?
Oz I went through 12 bags so $600 worth. I had the same thoughts obviously someone probably a shopkeeper has cashed in their stash as the majority came from 5 bags the rest was one here and there. Every other time I buy a few bags I am lucky to get 2 or more coloured coins.
So out of 300 coins, you were lucky enough to score 98 coins.
good result

Gee I'm lucky to find 4 to 6 coloured $2 per 2k bag/sack and would average 2 coloured per bag/sack so that's an amazing haul  I'd have to look at about 50k worth of coin at least so I agree and think someone has hit hard times and had to dump them.
So where are you Lucas? I'm in the thriving metropolis of Grafton :winkextra:
Hey Jack I am up in Tweed. My family are from down your neck of the woods though around the Casino Lismore area.
Cool, I have relo's around casino as well and all over the place. Yeah tweed is a pretty good spot and not far from brissie for the coin show :good:
Well done Lucas - tremendous haul :good:
Pedro
Maybe your name should be "LuckyLucasJ"?
:)
Congratulations on your finds!
I think someone put a fair amount of effort into putting those coins all together for you!
It has definitely given me incentive to buy more bags of coins now! I generally have poor results buying bags around here so don't bother too much (although I don't buy anywhere near as many coins as some of you guys do) plus I have a couple of girls at Coles and at another local bank who save a few coins for me.
The problem is now I have all these coins but am down almost $200 in noodling/collecting funds haha :mafia:
Also I'm not sure how many of these red Anzac $2 coins were released into circulation as the only place I seem to see them is for sale on eBay? This is the first one I have ever seen in the wild and I only know of 2 other people who have found one around here, it is probaly 10x rarer than a coronation to get in your change. (In these parts anyway)

I reckon someone probably brought it down from Brisbane. A very small number were released up here, and they do appear sporadically.
Here are my commemorative $2 stats (from March 2016 to April 2017):
2012 Rem. Day (Gold Poppy): 53
2013 Coronation (Purple): 3
2014 Rem. Day (Green): 3
2015 ANZAC Day (Red): 3
2015 Rem. Day (Orange): 15
2016 Olympics (Blue): 13
2016 Olympics (Black): 13
2016 Olympics (Red): 14
2016 Olympics (Yellow): 16
2016 Olympics (Green): 9
2016 Paralympics (Rainbow): 8
2016 Changeover: 24
Total number of coins searched: 13,197 ($26,394)
I also found a 1991 $2, which is clearly NCLT.
That is one hell of a lot of coins you have gone through, how many bags do you buy at a time?
My bank will only let me take 2 or 4 at a time if I am lucky and if the same woman is on the register when I come back (which she usually is) she won't give me any more and all the other banks around here rarely ever get coins in as they get them from all the local businesses and they are all in little ziplock bags.
I am thinking I may need to start getting some from the banks on the Gold Coast.
I finally got a 2015 ANZAC $1 today - a bit worse for the wear but at this point I can't be choosy.
I also got four 2001 20c pieces and two were Centenary of Federation (Victoria and South Australia).

Congratulations, Mr T. I always knew you'd find one eventually. I've found 5 so far, but none of them are in particularly good condition, either. The 2014 MoR ones seem to outnumber them in Brisbane by at least 2:1.
:wavemulticolor:
I have twenty two of them in good condition (say EF+) and have started throwing back the poor ones. You people obviously live in the wrong places for these.
If anyone needs some just give me a yell.

Yes my patience paid off - I've looked at a lot of dollar coins in the last little while and found pretty much nothing but I broke the drought (forgot to mention I got a 1994 rabbit ears too).
I've only seen two plain 2014 dollars but I don't go too hard on the dollars in general.
I get lots of 1994 rabbit ears for some reason. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was the year of the rabbit! :laugh2:

Much the same here - the 1994 rabbit ear is the one I have found the most of and then followed by 2008.

I looked through $120 worth of 50c pieces and didn't see a single 2000 Millenium or 2001 state - very disappointing.
I got a 2010 Fiji 5c piece from three rolls which was quite surprising - I don't see many Fijian coins usually but the 2010 is smaller and lighter so it did well to get into a roll.
I just found a 1975 5t coin from Papua New Guinea. It was the only exciting discovery from $24 worth of 5c coins.
Got these after going through:
$300 worth of $2
$80 worth of 50 cents
$80 worth of 10 cents
$40 worth of 5 cents

It should be working now. Had some issues with the links last night.
I think you've done very well with the 5c and 10c Changeover coins, whereas the 50c and $2 ones seem to be on par with what I'm finding. That's also quite a high strike rate for the 2011 10c, but not completely unheard of. The partial collar strike is a very good find - I've only got two in my collection (dated 1987 and 1996). The 2013 Coronation and 2015 ANZAC $2 coins are also extremely hard to find, so you've done well to get both of them within a single $300 batch.
:wavemulticolor:
Do you know whether your 1972 5c is the large echidna (low SD) or the small echidna (high SD) version? Could you please also tell me what's so special about the bottom 1999 10c? The top two are the large head version, but the bottom one looks like a small head, so I'm not sure why you included it in the photo.

Well done Rollycoins!
Collar errors are hard to find. Pretty sure I have only found 1 (a 10c).
I think the last photo might be damage by something like acid.
That's pretty cool Rolly, I've not seen a partial collar on a $2 before! :good:
Thanks Ozcoins and Unicorn! It isn't very clear on the photos, but the $2 coin shows an uneven thickness as well - thin on one end and thicker on the other. It just appeared as a very misaligned coin when I first saw it, then I realised the rims were off as well haha.
Well done, Rolly! The only collar errors I've found were on the 5c, which seems to be much more prone to this than the other denominations. I think the 10c is the next most common, so you've done very well to get it on a $2. :yahoo:
Your 1972 5c looks like the small echidna (high SD) variety, which is the more common of the two, and means that it was minted during the middle or latter part of the 1972 production run. The early ones all have the large echidna (low SD), which was used in previous years and included in the 1972 mint sets (which were mostly destroyed by PVC). Conversely, the small echidna (high SD) was used from 1972 to 1987, before being superseded by the large echidna (low SD) from 1984 onwards (both versions were used in 1984, 1986 and 1987).
So far, I've noodled two 1972 5c with the large echidna (low SD) reverse, and three with the small echidna (high SD) reverse. I also found one of the small echidna (high SD) reverse ones in change back in 2009, but I didn't know to check which type it was until last year. Finding any 1972 5c is exciting, but finding the large echidna (low SD) variety is the most exciting of all. :)
Went through $300 of $2 rolls yesterday and picked up the following:
- 1x 1990 Aboriginal Elder
- 1x 2012 Plain Poppy
- 1x 2012 Aboriginal Elder
- 1x 2011 Aboriginal Elder
- 1x 2013 Queen's Coronation (with gum all over the obverse :()
- 2x 2016 Changeover
- 1x 2017 Possum Magic Invisible Hush (week 1)
I'd try putting the one with gum on it in the freezer to get it to go hard and then use a toothpick to try and lift it off, or try acetone.

Thanks for the tip mate! I used acetone last night. Got most of it off, but it's probably been there for a while and left a white mark on the areas the gum used to cover. I'll try the freezer method next time.
Yes the acid is the saliva and gum wouldn't do it any favours that's for sure. What a shame.
The first 2011 10c I found had chewing gum on it, but I eventually gave up trying to remove it. I just kept noodling until I found a better one, but it's a huge shame that's happened to a coronation coin. :cray:
This is actually my second coronation $2 this year with gum all over it. The previous one had it on the reverse which is a tad more heartbreaking than if it was on the obverse hahaha.
Speaking of the 2011 10c, I got one in change from the vending machine just last week! But it has a few nicks here and there. Not the best but still a keeper!
Lucky you. I've never actually received a 2011 10c in change. All of mine are noodling finds, so congratulations! :good:
Did my first noodling for some time but did not get much at all.
Best find was a circulated green olympic $2
It's still a win Oz :good: .... it's funny how the barrel can be dry for ages and then the cup runneth over.
Michael had a good night noodling $1 coins last night.
3 x 2017 MOR
1 x Possum Magic
1 x HMAS Sydney "S"
1 x Kingsford Smith "C"
That's a good haul Jen :good:
Who the hell is putting $1 Possum Magic coins into circulation? They definitely need to have their head read. :dash1:

Haha but we need to thank these people for making noodling filled with fun and surprises! It could just be a child who perhaps got it as a present but doesn't really appreciate them I guess.
I can't find the thread I posted in so I'll just put this here. A few weeks ago I noodled a 5c partial collar. Here it is in all it's scratched up glory! First collar error I have noodled.

How are all the noodlers going? https://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=5213&pid=113427#pid113427 (https://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=5213&pid=113427#pid113427)
Nice one PP :good:
Nice find PPH!
Had a good day with $2 coins.
managed to get
2011 Elder x 1
2017 Elder x 10
2016 Changeover x 4
Possum Magic x 3
Orange Remembrance x 2
Green Olympic x 1
Red Olympic x 1
Para Olympic x 1
2017 Remembrance x 3
2017 Lest we Forget x 11
That's a great result JC!
Nice finds!
I brought home some bags of $2 from the bank today. That makes me feel optimistic.
Well I went through the $2 coins and every one an Aboriginal elder reverse; no errors and no low mintage years. That's noodling for you. Now I remember why I am not that keen to noodle $2 coins. Saving grace is you can get through a large value of coins quickly.
Maybe I will have better luck with the 20¢ I have for the weekend.
Sorry Jeff we must of had all the coloured coins.
Todays $2 noodling was:
2011 Elder x 3
2017 Elder x 5
poppy x 1
changeover x 7
2017 Lest We Forget x 6
Green Remembrance x1
Para Olympic x1
Black Olympic x 1
Red Olympic x 1
Green Olympic x 1
Yellow Olympic x 1
Possum Magic x 7
5c coin x 1
will be back to the bank next week to swap over for another bag
Well done Jen - great results!
Pedro
Yes, well done (with a tinge of jealousy).
Noodling a $100 bag of 20c pieces and found/came across this one:
https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19602
A 2001 $0.20c piece upset. Angle measured by me to be at 19 degrees.
But not quite as good as this one:
https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19603 (https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19603)
Measured at 266 degrees.
That last one is a great upset Goldie!!!! :good:
Still, 19º is a good upset -OK not as good as 266º.
Slight upsets are not uncommon in 2001 20¢ but larger ones are scarce.
This is the best one of those I have noodled.
That one is a good upset.
I think the one I have at 266 degrees was sent/given to me by a forum member.
Lets hope I can find some more. In saying that, I did throw two 10 degree upsets back into the pond earlier today.
Excellent finds guys!
Pedro
I was able to swap 1500 x $1 coins today and at the end of it I had:
1 x Last ANZAC, "S" Mint Mark;
2 x Rabbit Ears; and
3 x Spew Roos.
All up a good days searching.
Going through another 1,480 x 50c pieces and found this:
https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19609 (https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19609)
https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19608 (https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19608)
https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19607 (https://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=19607)
I trust that someone will confirm that it is a clipped coin.
It looks the real deal to me Goldie!!!
So glad to see you're having some success after starting up again! :good:
Well Done Bruce.
Thanks for all your kind words.

All my clipped 50c pieces are now together.
Nice little collection there Goldie :ok:
Pedro
Thankyou one and all.
I do have a couple of $1 coins and 1 x $2 coin that have been clipped.
All taken from circulation.
Nice find Goldie. 50c Clips are few and far between. :yahoo:
Looks good to me too Goldie!

Yes they are.
I have only ever found one.
Noodled a 50th anniversary of decimal currency $1 coin yesterday, in $200 worth. So they are out there.
Also got 3 of the 2017 100 years of ANZAC $1's, which I am putting aside for now as the mintage of these is not known.
Great finds mate! Which state are you based? I know SA was the one where quite a few popped up before.
Thanks.
I'm in NSW, western Sydney to be more accurate.
The wife handed over a 2016 changeover $1, a 2017 $1 MOR and a 2017 $2 (elder) from her purse today. :)
Pedro
Very nice! Strange how the 2016 changeover is suddenly popping up!
I like the clipped coins.. something i am always looking out for.. my father had a clipped 10c when i was a kid.. that he found in change.. he wasnt interested in coins really. But was just one of those odd things you hang onto.
From $20 of 10c pieces I got a 2017 American quarter (George Rogers Clark).
Went through $60 worth of 50c pieces - a 2000 Royal Visit and 1991 Decimal Currency Anniversary were the only interesting ones but I threw them back.

Not much hope these days with the $1 machines but back in the 1970's you would often find a Quarter in a payout from a 10c machine, esp. at the Tweed Heads & Byron Bay Golf Clubs, must have been the American visitors. No Pokies in Qld at that time.

The 2017 $1 MOR and $2 elder are now widespread :winkextra:
Today out of 1,500 @1 coins, I found:
Rabbit Ears x 3, (2 x 1998, 2003)
1 x 2000 COF upset at an angle of 128 degrees.
Cool finds mate! But what's with the 2003 rabbit ears? Whereabouts was the cud?
Sorry, should have read 2008.
And the COF should have read 2001.
