Title: Melbourne ANDA Money Expo
Post by: purplepennyhunter on August 27, 2016, 06:47:42 PM
I got a text from the in-laws about half an hour ago declaring that they saw their son on the news, what is going on? Some sort of money show?

I hopped on the recorder box (I taped it as I have to stop myself saying) and saw all the usual suspects at the Melb show today including our own Goldseeker! And Markn peering at a swan dollar close-up. So very exciting as I wasn't able to be there. Go the cool kids noodling the 5 cent pieces.

I didn't manage to find it on the internet yet but I think it might show up here soon:

I might be wrong but I suspect ANDA will receive some bad feedback over the distribution of the FJ and HK Holden PNCs today.

The queue was enormous from the get-go at 10 a.m. and yet the two people on the sales table were allowing people to purchase 20 PNCs at a time (10 of each) early on.

With only 750 mintage and (supposedly) 375 to be distributed on each day, there will be many disappointed people.

We already see profiteering on Ebay with Buy It Now prices of $200 each!

Cheers

Probably everything, and what they don't already know they can buy from the government agencies like census etc, and especially now everything is linked so they know how much you get paid, how much tax you pay and what you went to the doctor for the last time you went :dodgy:

Yeah, me too. Just got home from there a minute ago. Went the long way round, via an AGM in Laverton (and had some fun on the train home, courtesy of an imbecile, 7 PSO's and two coppers).

Anyway, did bugger all work today, unless you count talking to Goldy, spotting two other forum members (though Goldy didn't say who they were, and they never came near the table), and possibly signing up a lovely lady to MNS and maybe ACF if she takes my advice about an iPod.

I DID however spend a couple of hours at the end of the day earbashing the lovely young ladies from the Mint about everything numismatic. Can't recall the name of the girl who designed the olympic coins (and her name is obscured in the pic), but the other one was Adonis Cox. I think we both learned a bit from the conversation, and she seemed genuinely interested in the views of serious collectors. She might even join ACF, maybe.

Oh, BTW.. the kids found TWO 1972 5¢ coins on the table. Nice introduction to the hobby, eh?

I didn't even notice the camera pointing at me!  It was a good show, very busy until lunch time.  Gold coin entry was a good idea and the show special PNC certainly got people lining up.  Perhaps they should try putting the show special in a booth at the back of the room next time so the line doesn't obstruct people trying to get in or block the tables of dealers up the front.

I saw Goldy on the News, but missed seeing Mark.

The kids looked like they were enjoying themselves with the 5c coins. I wonder how many will become 'dedicated' collectors.

Pleased to hear there were a couple 72's amongst them.

It is unfortunate But these show release coins are now being seen by the majority of buyers as a Get rich Quick opportunity and has nothing to do with collecting.
As with all get rich quick ideas the end is usually very rapid and very messy

I wonder what Belinda calls "good nick" for a 72 5 cent so you can get $40 for it.

it was like that during the mint open day earlier this year
people were buying 20-30 or more - of those gold round open day 50c pieces in the morning
and then later in the day we were limited to a maximum of 10 per customer and as the line grew smaller it was then 5 per customer and I think by the time we got to the counter it was no more than 3 per customer then it dwindled down to about 2 per customer

when i was at the RAM holden open day we were told one per customer and the bloke right beside me bought 10 - go figure???

Well done GS, maybe you should get it graded as it shows a bit of detail compared to some of the others :good:

You could always tell Mrs GS that the world cruise is put off for a wee bit so you can get the holy dollar  but then again she missed out last year so she mightn't be too happy about that :winkextra:

But on a serious note mate and to all the other collectors as well, have you told your family about some of the stuff you have and how valuable it is and NOT to just give it away or sell cheap as it seems to be a problem when something happens to the collector and the family just think it's not worth much. I have told mum that the stuff in slabs etc are worth a little so don't give them away but a lot of the stuff I have in bags like rabbit ears and different errors etc can be sold cheap or put back into the pond as she probably wouldn't need the stress of getting rid of them and when my nieces and nephew are old enough I will be telling them but for now they just get told to "STAY AWAY" from uncle Jack's coins :blush2:

In the link I put up I see a holy dollar for $125,000 and they'd probably come down if you sweet talked them :)

I saw Andrew Crellin in Canberra earlier this year and he was soooooo excited about the 5 cent promotion at the shows for the kiddies

he was almost jumping out of his jeans with the sheer delight of it all
it was great to see someone so genuinely happy with a collecting activity

it's like that when the bus loads of kids turn up at the Mint here  too

Not only does it help get the kids interested it also allows mum and dad have have a wander around without the little darlings going "I'm bored, can we go home". It's great that he's had the initiative to do something like this, well done Andrew :good:

do you remember that Aussie pre-decimal errors and everything collector who died?
was his name Peter Wall - he died without direct inheritors for his estate

the big thing that came out of the distribution and sale of his estate/collection was that he did not have the collection cataloged and therefore, few knew just what he had and what it was worth, particularly the auction house that sold off his collection

a lot of people made a lot of money from buying at the auctions that were held to distribute his estate

CAB had an editorial about it

Much more space and plenty of parking immediately opposite the venue.   %0 metre walk instead of trying to find a parking spot on the open roads.

Meh. Come to our MNS coin show in Mitcham in October. Its next to the station, in a dead end street with a massive carpark, and its a lovely venue as well. About half the size of the ANDA expo I reckon. AND its for a good cause!

Oh, and bring the clockface.. it really needs to be on show. :)
