Title: odd size dollar coin
Post by: trout on January 07, 2013, 03:27:30 PM
I just picked this up from the post office.
Is this the only size the year of the rat $1 coin was minted in?

I bought a year of the rooster from Perth Mint and yeah they are not the traditional $1 size, more like a medallion. It’s still cute because I like bird coins but it’s not quite right to look at, if it didn’t have one dollar on it, it wouldn’t be currency.
Not something I would go into collecting its more of a novelty.

That’s why you have to be careful in knowing what you want to collect, it can get very confusing between what you call circulating tender designs and NCLT designs and then there are Perth Mint designs that are out of the box.

I like to stick to RAM designs for certain currency coins like $1 and 50c; they tend to stick to circulating tender size coins. (Mostly use the same planchets)

The Perth Mint coins can use any planchets for their coins, that why you try to avid the alu/brz coins, I only collect silver from Perth Mint, and even then it’s very pick and choose, like bullion is only 1/10th, and coloured printed 1/2oz.

I have a few other large alibrz dollars redback $1 coins,I just didn't expect this to be that weird size.
All my other year of the (Whatever) coins are normal sized coins.
The other screw up coin I have is the 2011silver roo at sunset $1, It is a bit smaller than the normal $1 coins :kez_11:

There would not be many $1, 50c or 20c coin I dont have. I would be one of the few dealers going around that could supply just about everything in "decimal change".

I got another 2 of these buggers in the mail today, Queens 85th birthday and Royal Australian Navy 1911-2011.
I don’t know wether to steer clear of these (PNC Issues) or start a new segment in my $1 collection
