Post by: tania on August 04, 2016, 11:06:25 AM
I know you have talked about cleaning coins with acetone would this be a good way to remove fingerprints from coins?

Thanks Tania

What is everyone doing with there Olympic coins that have come out of the tills?
I would like to put these into saflips and into my pp folders but don't like the idea of leaving the fingerprints on there.

Also what about error coins found in circulation like incused, spew Roos, cuds etc how can these be cleaned before storage?

Thanks Tania

Hot soapy water isn't a bad idea on circulated coins :good:

Swapping them for sealed bags, precisely because you can't remove fingerprints.

It normally takes a while for the fingerprints to etch into the coins so a quick clean in hot soapy water should remove them if it is done as soon as you get them home :ok:

How common are fingerprints on coins? I've got thousands of coins and only a handful have detracting finger print marks. Admittedly I would avoid buying a coin with such marks and if it was circulated what difference does it make? After all its hard for a coin to circulate without someone touching it. In any case it only cost face value.

Whatever you decide to do, don't use acetone on any coin with colour added.  The acetone will remove the colour and your coin will be ruined.

Tania,   If you want a set of Olympic $2 coins, go buy the fiv e coin folder set from Safeway/Woolworhts and if you decide to break open the packaging, wear gloves if you decide to handle the coins.

That way, no finger prints on the coins.

In regards to "error coins":   Unless you can get a UNC coin then you are stuck with the coin you find.   Place it into a 2 x 2 and store that way.   There is no way that I know of where one can restore a circulated coin into a really good looking before storage.   One can only keep looking for a better duplicate if there is one out there.
