Title: Australian Pre Decimal Key Dates
Post by: ausproofs on August 02, 2016, 06:34:07 AM
Hi Folks

I have tried to find a comprehensive list of Australia Pre Decimal key dates. However I couldn't really find anything reliable. Could you please point me to a doc somewhere I can refer to ? Better if you can post here so we can all refer to it ? Thanks in advance for your help...

Probably best to get a copy of Greg McDonalds "Australian Coins and Banknotes" and Renniks "Australian Pre-Decimal Coin Varieties" as a reference,2nd hand copies will do as nothing much has changed for 50 years except the normal roller coaster of values.

Bob,just as a matter of interest where did you get the mintage figures for the 1919 DD?

I've read over the years several estimates but haven't seen a firm figure.

Edit...i see Peter Andrews estimates at 20,000- 40,000 but i've seen lower(estimates).

I got it from Peter or David Guy. In either case I don't think they were too definitive i.e. not direct from mint records or anything like that. I think they both might be happy with 20k to 40k.

OK,Thanks, whatever the mintage it was low.

Sorry, I wrote the above reply from memory while I was out and about yesterday. When I got home I looked up my notes. The 25k figure does not come from Peter or David. All my discussions with them about mintages have been in relation to 1920 and 1931.

Here is where the 25k figure comes from:

"In July 1920, the Melbourne Mint sent three pairs of 1919-dated working dies to the Sydney Mint so it could prepare for the ceremonial striking of its first penny in October of that year. These were experimental dies that were lightly used to test the presses for the 1920 Penny production and the reverses were marked with an additional dot above the top scroll to distinguish their production from the Melbourne minted 1919 //. Penny."

"The obverse dies were of the English type, the only ones held by Melbourne at the time. The 1919 .//. Penny that resulted is a scarce coin with perhaps a mintage of around 25,000 and marks the first 'unofficial' Sydney-struck penny. Records show that the 1919 .//. reverse dies were destroyed in 1924."

http://www.benchmarkcoincatalogue.com/#85

As you correctly state, whatever the figure it was low. It would have been better to leave out the 1919dd from the above table since I did not include other penny varieties which are all pretty much unknown quantities. The OP referred to key dates and I reckon 1919 and 1920 are both key date pennies but not necessarily because of low mintages.

Thanks again for making the effort Bob,i remember reading years ago,1970's?, they were a trial minting at the Sydney Mint but haven't seen much about them since. The conspiracy theories about them being not a genuine variety died out in the 1960's as far as i can tell.

Thanks for posting Rob, and enjoyed flipping through the benchmark booklet. Had seen it before but not in that format. :good:

Interesting to note that the 1920 Penny dot over top shown, is not the same coin that was auctioned in IAG's Benchmark sale back in january 2015. Just going by IAG's catalogue that is.
