Title: Colorful 2$ coins
Post by: DarkDaiver on June 14, 2016, 11:34:34 AM
Hello guys!
Does anybody now the mintage quantities of 2$ red and orange coins?
Since I've been to Asutralia I didn't found red one, but I got like 6 orange 2 dollars.
Are the mintage quantities so different?

At the time of their launch I think the RAM was flagging mintages of about 1.5m for the red and 2.0m (minimum) for the orange $2. Will get a better (but maybe not final) idea when the RAM Annual report comes out in October.

They're all around 1.5-2 million.

Look on my website and you'll find the Decimal Mintages PDF, as well as banknote prefixes. Handy to stick on your iPad or mobile for easy reference on the run. ;)

Only half the mintage is known to have been shipped and distributed. And that was done very very poorly, with most going to Sydney and immediately being hoarded.

The second half has probably been shipped, and is sitting in Armaguard depots because there's a lot of $2 coin around. Expect them to get to them eventually.. some of the purple Coronations took 9 months to surface!

Some of the information I receive is attributable, some is not. Based on a variety of sources, observations can be made and conclusions drawn.

Feel free to draw your own conclusions if you don't like mine.

As RAM is often unable or unwilling to provide accurate mintage figures on some coin issues it is often that there is some conjecture and speculation as to the actual mintage numbers.
The incused Millennium 50 cent coin is an excellent example.
NO mintage figures for this variety was forthcoming from RAM so many collectors put their theories together and the general consensus is that 200,000 of these coins were produced.
This 200,000 number is not written in stone But it is the best that can be done given the facts known and in all reality it is probably very close :ok:
I imagine that the same sort of logic is being used to determine the mintage figures of these recent mintages of the coloured $2 coins given the Scant information provided by RAM on the subject.

Edit; I put 20,000 instead of 200,000

Which is why my decimal mintages PDF is full of questions on many issues.

This is not a simple problem. The RAM are quite secretive on all sorts of things. They are also incompetent both in recording and preserving data. A LOT of the historical record has been destroyed by them, and what remains they won't divulge anyway. And their 'official' figures are a joke, with many inaccuracies. :(

The other fly in the ointment, at least in the shorter term, is the exclusive arrangement with Armaguard, which has its own issues in the way they do things. Just because they pick up a semi-trailer load from the mint does not mean those coins are going to see the light of day anytime soon, let alone be evenly distributed.

Armaguard don't care at all about what a coin is. To them its all the same. They just look at how much of each denomination a given depot has in stock, and they ship to them accordingly. So if there are ten pallets of coin X, and depot Y needs 12 pallets, guess where ALL those coins are going to go? And once there, if there is an influx of recycled coin collections, those will go back out before they get to the new stock, which can sit there for months, or even years. :(

This is how all the mules ended up in Perth, and the vast majority of red $2 in Sydney. Its also how after months of chasing coronations with nil results, I picked up a block of rolls by accident 9 months after release. And it sucks, because if you're not in the right place at the right time, you're screwed. I actually gave up hunting new coin entirely, because after 12 months of visiting 35 branches weekly, I found not a single sack of new coins, of ANY denomination! :(

Its enough to drive you into collecting cabbage patch dolls or something. :diablo:

That is what they are paid to do and they do it reasonably well. I would be fairly sure their contract terms don't include distributing new issues immediately and all over the country.
What does seem fishy, however, is that new coins that have not generally been delivered to the banks appear on the secondary market; and sometimes before an official release date. Think about who might have access to them.

Its no secret that certain Armaguard staff take coins out and sell them. Not that they steal them, of course. But they do swap them and make a very nice bonus out of it. :(

This is very true as it's amazing how many foreign coins you find in pretty much everything except 50 cent but you still find the odd kiwi and figi in there too but the one's that really annoy me are the $1 & 2 where you get a yanky 1/4 as a $1 or 5 cent or an asia coin worth less than 5 cents for a $2 coin and don't worry the banks are just as bad giving you bags that are either short or have foreign coins in them and that's why I only get coins from anz as theirs seem to be a hell of a lot better than the rest and the comm bank is by far the worst and they're the only one's here that want to charge you to noodle where the others don't and nab you don't even need an account and they'll happily change money for you but other places might not have banks that are as good.

I've never had any trouble getting them to wear the shortfalls. I remember one UNC sack that was short EIGHT $2 coins. They replaced them.

F why is it you continually besmirch others; make claims and do not provide any evidence of your claims?

Also re the Coronation release - Two friends and I collected around 10,000 Coronation coins between us here in Melbourne (north, north west, west suburbs). Sacks (holding 40 X 25 coin bags) of the coins were availabe at Westpac and NAB branches.

Re an earlier comment why the ORANGE is more prevalent than the RED is  because the RED celebrated 100 years of ANZAC and the release received unprecendented coverage on radio, TV etc. My local banks even had signs stating "WE DO NOT HAVE THE RED TWO DOLLAR COIN SO PLEASE DO NOT ASK!"

Sounds like you were very lucky (and also very industrious) with obtaining the Coronation coins. I would really have liked to have been able to obtain a bag from the bank.
My local banks never had a one (I certainly asked) -I can't provide any evidence for that but I suppose I could borrow a video camera and interview the managers and post the video here to keep you happy with my claim. I do not believe that the staff snaffled them all and just claimed they didn't get any. At the bank I usually frequent the staff know me well and would, I am sure, have reserved a bag for me.

I did see photos of such "we do not have..." signs posted online and also claims that banks in Sydney were rationing them. I am happy to accept peopless claims that that was the case without hard evidence.

I am happy for Fulvio to make his claims and decide how I take them (generally I believe he is accurate although I do not always agree with him). If I want to dispute something he says then I need to make (politely) a very good counter-case because, knowing the man, his statements will be well founded.

Love him or Hate him Fulvio is Not prone to BS'ing.
Personally I Like the Bloke because he shoots from the hip and tells it as he see's it :good:
Also he is always willing to share his bank windfalls fairly with other collectors without "Profiteering" like some so called "collectors" are prone to

Awww, jeez... enough with the love-in... you guys are giving me a big head. ;)

Jeff, the bags were mixed. The mint seeded them so they had between 2 and 5 coronations each. Which sucked.. I still have thousands of standard designs if you want some. ;)

What you need is the green Chubb/Proseguo rolls. Those are 100% coronations.

As for the Armaguard staff, I have friends in the trade who buy from them. :P

Regarding the relative prevalence of Red/Orange, I can't comment, having failed to acquire either. In fact, I've now given up noodling entirely as a result of this fiasco.
