I picked these up from the Post office today.
Our first Royal visitor and someone shot him in the back .

This is an interesting read about the first Royal visit that this medallion commemorates :good:

Cool - a double portrait!
I like the boat :drooling:
Nice!
The bottom one I believe was given out to school children in celebration of the Majesties Coronation.
When I was gold prospecting, myself and others used to find these medallions in the old school grounds in and around the goldfields of Victoria.
If I can find those that I found, I shall post pickies of them.
The details on the 1911 medallion are a little "Disappointing" , The faces of the two women on the reverse are rather crudely sculptured as is the Kangaroo.
Otherwise I quite like it :good:
I seem to be picking up more and more of this type of thing lately
I have a HMS Galatea 1867 medallion as well - I am fairly certain that it is one of Australia's first medallions produced by Stokes (?)
they used to be worth more but don't seem to be as expensive as they were a few years ago
ps I think that the museum descriptin is wrong - they were made from what is known as 'white metal' not copper
most serious coin collectors develop a bit of a token/medallion collections
i'd like to see you get yourself some early aussie tokens too Trout
they are such an important part of our history
Quotei'd like to see you get yourself some early aussie tokens too Trout

The only token I have so far is a "Peace and Plenty" penny , unfortunately it has been polished in the past :dash1:
I did enjoy reading the history associated with the HMS Galatea 1867 medallion on the museum website :good:
I have a 'small collection' (lower grades)
ones in nicer grades are a bit exy
the peace and plenty also come in various reverses as well
I also have small series of the English workhouse token and love them & the history around them
I am a little bit weary/cautious about getting into the tokens because I know so little about them and if I start on any new numismatic project I normally dive in boots and all.
This time I think I will just pick away at the edges of these until I gain the knowledge I will need to compile a decent set :ok:
I understand your cautiousness Trout......I collect transportation (Bus, Ferry, Tram, Truck) tokens and it took me a while to be happy with what I am buying.
I do love the Sydney Ferry tokens and passes from the Manly Ferries of past.
Also am a big collector of Numismatic Club medals from around Australia. Have a very large collection of these and have just purchased a few more for my collection.
Unfortunately as I am travelling at the moment, these will go into my PO box until I return so will not get to see them.
A lot of token around so best to start on a theme and expand from there. So many different types and some are reasonably priced as well.
Barry
I have a small container of all of the above
been sitting here for yonks
My RAM Medallion was waiting for me at the Post Office when I got back home from my last job.
I can see why PP is enamoured with these as they are impressive specimens in both size and design :good:
In the last image I have placed a $1 coin on the Medallion to show the size of these.
A Silver one of these would be rather nice.

What can I say......it is very impressive.
Pity the RAM does not do this sort of quality anymore.
Now you'll have to get one each for the grandies :winkextra:

This one is the updated version with the Maklouf portrait and a reducing machine. There's less info about this one, I have only seen perhaps 2 ever, I think it comes in 2 sizes.
Then there's a newer one again, I'll have to find a photo. I think it has animals on one side.

Nah it was in a dealers scratch box for a dollar. I like to see interest in this stuff, it's totally my thing!
Ok so here's the other I spoke of. I can date this circa 1990, had to be shortlived because the $2 has no HH and it has 1c and 2c.

Nice find!
Yes second that :good:
At anda shows I suss all the cheap boxes as you never know what your likely to find..and I'm a cheap bastard :)
That one is a ripper PP, Some great artwork on that one especially the Smug look on the Emu :good:
I have been gathering a few Medallions lately , mainly Brit ones.
These RAM Medallions are nice and big and they are also all about coins not historic events which make them more appealing :)
I picked these 3 Medallions up from eBay yesterday :)
Sellers images.

I found this medal in the Mints 1991 Christmas catalogue. "An era of coins" was to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mint. It sold for $16.50 and was designed by Vladimir Gottwald.
Protective clothing at work - who needs it
Pedro
I picked this up today from the Post Office.

:agreed:
This one arrived today accompanied with a whole lot of stamps on the envelope that weren't even franked :good:
A lovely little medallion that is the same design as the Bronze one I am waiting to arrive and about the same size as a 20c coin.
I am pretty sure that this is a copper/nickel one and my first one as such :)
Thank you So much PP , I Love it :yahoo:

Thanks for that bit of background information Mark :good:
This one came with the case and even the outer cardboard wrap But there is no card/coa with it :(
Lovely detail.
These arrived on Friday and I have just gotten around to imaging them.
The Silver 1977 royal visit medallion was housed in a nasty PVC slip inside the clamshell case unfortunately.
Not too much damage done and I have removed it from the PVC But it would have been far better if it wasn't in that blasted slip.
The large Bronze medallion is in perfect nick and the "antique" finish on this is rather nice :)

Too late! It is a very impressive birdie, but I'm not really into Medals, so I can live without it.
QuoteI can live without it.
And I bet you could also happily live with it.
Seeing as I currently have 486 Bird Coins, I don't think a medal would really excite me.
I've got a search list of nearly 100 that I don't have, but haven't actively searched for ages. There are probably thousands of them that I don't know about, especially on NCLT stuff.
Picked this up the other day and got a little more than I had bargained for he he, but our 4 year old Grandson is gonna just love it I reckon :yahoo: Oh yeah, and me too . With a mintage of 3,000 they may even hold their own. Oops...a bit big, Woooooooooooooooooooooo

No ring damn it heh, but the two small sculls that lock the protector flap in place bring back memories of a prized Phantom split ring found in the school fete lucky dip
I was browsing through eBay and came across this one, It looks interesting and I don't have one of these :)

They were made in silver, bronze and cadmium plated.
By the looks of the one I just got it is a Chrome plated version, At least I hope it is because if it is a Silver one it has been polished to death.

Very interesting provenance for that medal Mark :good:
Pretty lousy luck to have survived 11 months of trench warfare only to die from what really shouldn't have been a life threatening wound
Something Mark didn't add, a little inappropriate, he ran off a little after his enlistment, married his cousin and his wife and his mother fought over his personal effects after his death.

If you read the Red Cross witness statements to his death it looks like it wasn't a gun shot at all. But rather shrapnel from a HE shell that has penetrated his abdomen.
Ouch that is pretty nasty

Not exactly a medallion but not really a coin either. Improvised ID disc from a WW1 AIF soldier. You can read about the man here (http://www.australian-coins.com/collectables-and-ephemera/world-war-1-australian-identity-disc-for-edmund-stanley/)

Thanks Mark, what an interesting story :good:
Old Mate that owned that dog tag sounds like he was a nasty piece of work and probably only wanted the Medals to sell for some more Grog
I think it is a bit Sad to think that this Bloke made it back when so many Good Sons and Husbands didn't .
Not a Medal but related. I reckon it was used as a seal for official documents of the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition.
It still has remnants of coloured substances on its surface.
I have pictured it for comparision with the 1980 reproduction medal.
It would be nice to get confirmation of its usage and an image of a document where it was used, but the Museums etc aren't very helpful.

Has it got a handle of some description on the back of it.
Is everyone aware of the Terry Pepperell Donation Auction?
We had a look at what was on offer at the last MNS meeting. I'm not into medals and such, but there were some tempting items nonetheless.

Just a plate, may have been attached to something in the past, no signs of that though. Same size as the nedal, crown size.
