I have received a ad from Downies this day and they have a complete pre decimal coin collection for sale which includes the 1923 halfpenny, 1921/22 overprint threepence and the 1930 penny all in DANSCO Supreme Albums.
Not sure about the grades though.
If I had the money, I would seriously consider buying it.
A ready made collection for the beginner or someone with a bit of spare cash.
What is the price tag attached to that lot Bruce?
Quite a bit unless the coins are really really bad as the overdate, the half penny would be enough let alone adding in the 1930 so a bit more than "a bit of spare cash" as I could sell everything I own and still only be a quarter of the way :(

I can think of far better things to do with 40 grand than destroy any and all enjoyment of a hobby like that.
There'd be more fun in travel or any number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And that sort of money would likely buy several.
There'd be more (and safer) profit investing in precious metals, the stockmarket, or even some low-end real estate (or get into the negative gearing caper before they kill it).
Heck, you could even combine the two into a fun way to profit...

:swoon: Gee KC that's sad :(
Oh McDuck you've done it again :laugh2:
I had a look at the Downies offering and thought that it would be nice to have but purchasing that is not what collecting is about. Collecting is what the previous owner did. The new owner will be investing, presumably with the hope that the collection will appreciate.
I would not be surprised if the choice items eventually end up being sold separately and the residue sold for, maybe, only hundreds of dollars -we will likely never know.

Yep,but you could put together a great set for that sort of money,$5000 each for a slabbed 23 & 21,$10,000-$20,000 for a 1930.
Aimed at Kerry Packer types(i can't spell Rinehart) that have one look and throw them in a safe.
I imagine that this is a set of pretty average coins, Just like Mine except I don't have the 23,30, 21/22 coins.
I would love to flog my set off for big bucks and Start Over, Now that would be FUN.
Getting coins one or even a few at a time when I can afford it or when they become available is where the enjoyment comes into it for me because at the end of the day there is a real sense of accomplishment and pride at what I have managed to achieve.
They may not be the best set in the world or even close to it But the set is MY set and that's what it is all about as far as I am concerned.
Buying a "Ready Made" set for me is pretty much like wearing a dead mans suit :ok:
Not exactly sure about this, but just say the big three plus other key dates amounted to $26,000. Is the rest of the collection worth $16,000?
Have now fully read the spiel and answered my own question. It surely must be, as they urge an early order

Probably not.

I suspect Downies would have picked through the whole collection and if there is more money to be made selling off each one separately they would have done so. Most likely their have priced each one, added up the total of their retail values and then slapped a "convenience" margin on top.
Gee if I had that money I would rather buy
1949 £1 R31 Coombs/Watt Consecutive Run of 100
now that is something much rarer that a complete Pre decimal coin set.
Is that similar to 7-11 "convenience" store fiscal policy?
Many, me included, would use a more emotionally charged expression.
I wouldn't mind buying it to go with my 2 x 1930 pennies, 2 x 1923 halfpennies and 2 x 1921/22 overprint threepences that I already own.
I need the three high wants for my own collection.
I bet your coins coins are in higher grades too goldie. Can you share the grades of your coins. Years ago the 1930 and 1923 maybe chuck in the overdate and they could have fetched well over 40k. Prices are right down at the moment.so much for long term investment in numismatics
I only wish I could give you the grades of my VIP/high value so called coins but I can't.
I really need someone to have a look at each coin in the albums etc and give a grade for each coin.
That way, I can more accurately value my collection.
At present I use the lowest vales given for the pre decimals in Greg Macdonalds catalogue and the real grade values for the decimal collection.
Accordingly, I wouldn't mind turning the total value into cash.
well the old KGV are fairly easy to grade
the 1940's KGVI are much harder to grade
This is a good resource to help grade your coins Bruce :good:
http://www.anda.com.au/documents/resource/00114_Pt%202%20-%20Grading%20Commonwealth%20coins.pdf
Yes, I have that reference and I downloaded and printed the images that show the general progression of FDR to good but I still cant grade coins like others on this forum.
I have tried and been well off target at Trouts specimens and further, although the obverse of the publication is shown nothing is shown about the reverse as compared to the list at the end of the page that shows the obverse.
I believe that if I did my own grading, I would be over grading rather under grading.
In saying that, I just might give of the pre decimals a go.
The downies collection has 339 coins, my collection has over 350 individual coins (not inc. 1930 1D and 1923 1/2D). The difference is probably mostly in the pennies. How many coins in your collection?
about 10 kilo's :)

Perfect :) :laugh2:
I have pretty much ignored my pre decimal collections over the last few years and have been concentrating on the Decimal side of Australian coins.
Recently a certain member gifted me a set of Maundy coins and as a result of this I have been concentrating most of my collecting efforts on these types of coins ever since .
I have many different types of coins from various countries and eras including medallions and anything else that attracts my attention as I am easily distracted by something that is unknown or new to me.
I do cherish my Australian pre decimal collection But I am not a fanatic and I long ago realised that the 1923 1/2 penny and the 1930 penny are way too expensive for me to justify owning them just because they are a rare date and the design is the same as the rest of my coppers.
This is why I have little interest in these already completed sets as putting a collection together from scratch is far more interesting and rewarding than just buying one off the shelf.
Each to their own But this sort of offering holds little interest for me :ok:

All is good AJ.
I had heard about these coins in the past But had never seen them "In Hand".
The details in the designs are outstanding for such a small coin and the toning can be quite beautiful :)
Yes I like them :friends:

Yeah, right-o, I will. I'm going to Canberra on Sunday but when I get back I will be in touch.
Now, for me one thing I like about collecting coins is counting them. This is a summary I made a few years ago. Since then PCGS has added 17 pennies to the list:
I have noticed that some 'collections' don't count the various die marked versions, say on the penny
i.e. 1941 penny - K.G ; Y. ; no dot - 1940 K.G ; no dot
same for the 1955, 1956 & 1958, 1959 - Melbourne or Perth
so, often they only have one of each year, not each mint
Yes RG that's the trouble with collecting is what to do and some varieties can be quite expensive.
r9453, your list misses the crown.
As for some of those 17 pennies that PCGS added I'm not sure that some of them should be included (like the 1925 broken leg, it is just a die clash and not a die pairing or mint mark). Also haven't they added a few variations in other denominations this past year ('53 florin, 1926 serif/sans serif sixpence etc). Certainly the "complete" Downies set isn't complete.
Yep, I left out the 2 x Crowns, add 2 to the total.
I was happy with the PCGS registry set when it had about 75 to 80 pennies, some of the coins they have added are quite rare and out of my reach. I would draw the line at well documented die pairs and mint marks although that might result in a long list as well. I never knew the 1925 is a die clash but I guess it was included because its generally well known.
The 1953 florin with large reverse denticles is recognised but not included in the florin registry set. However, by way of example, the 1946 large loop 6 is not recognised. The 1926 sixpence w/ serif 2 is recognised but not included in the set registry.
When I say recognised, I mean that PCGS has given the coin a unique identifier:
1953(m) Florin Large Reverse Denticles (http://www.pcgs.com/pop/valueview.aspx?s=546428)
1926(m,sy) 6D Serif 2 (http://www.pcgs.com/pop/valueview.aspx?s=546467)
I would think that most of us just try to have the various dates and different mints in our Pre decimal collections to consider them a complete collection.
The various overdates and varieties are collected and are desirable/interesting but are not considered as essential by most for their collection to be complete.
I imagine that this is the premise that Downies are using when they describe this as a "Complete" set :ok:

I have to agree with Trout here. My main object was to get all the dates & mints first, & then to worry about varieties & errors afterwards.
I can't afford a 1930 penny and the 1923 half has eluded me thus far but I'm quietly confident I'll get one eventually. Although even if I had both I would still be interested in this topic. For me its only a relatively minor aspect of my ongoing research into our pre-decimal coins.
I think it all comes down to available information when any collector is setting their parameters. When thinking of Aussie pennies, for years the local coin bibles only included the basic year dates, as well as a few mint mark varieties and even fewer die varieties in their listings. As a consequence, this is what dealers, auction houses and naturally collectors set their sites on.
As time rolled bye the fruits of more and more research was becoming available which a gradually increasing number of collectors soaked up, and it must be said, in the face of silent resistance by catalogue editors and dealers. Many a comment would be heard about how it wasn't worth the time and effort to familiarise with, as it turns out, some of the most important numismatic items since federation. At least one of Australia's main two catalogues in more recent times has seen fit to list all the major varieties, albeit mixed in with hoards of errors etc, while the other publication remains in denial.
Even so, and despite subconscious early industry opposition, the interest in mint mark and die varieties has been gaining traction as evidenced by considerable increases in auction prices of late. The recent decision by PCGS to include all the major penny varieties in their registry set listing will no doubt drive interest even further, and at least one of our major catalogues must be starting to feel red faced over their refusal so far to improve an inferior product.
So at the moment, yes, the main focus of a slowly dwindling group of pre decimal collectors may still be aimed at the basic year dates. But, there's also an ever increasing number of collectors, armed with knowledge and on the hunt for a slowly dwindling supply of quality major varieties.
A few short years down the track the vast majority of pre decimal collectors may well be including the major varieties. It's all about consistent supply of accurate information.
If there was a "Like" button, I would click it. Very well put, autocoupler.
Quoteslowly dwindling group of pre decimal collectors
I think you are right about this.
I would think that most of the new collectors taking up this Hobby/Habit will tend to be focusing on the Decimal coins as most of these are available in pocket change and at very little cost.
Just getting the "Mint set Only" coins is quite enough expense for the majority of novice collectors.
To start a collection of Pre Decimal coins for many a collector is just too daunting and expensive now compared to Decimal coins especially in the higher grades.
