Hello, fellow coin enthusiasts. I'm in Australia for 6 months and wanted to get as much circulating commemorative coins as possible. I've read that RAM released special designs for each coin in 2016, but so far I found only 50c. Are 5, 10, 20 cents and 1, 2 dollar coins for this anniversary also going to be released in circulations? RAM is not very clear about it.
:welcome:
To the forum :)
The 5, 10, 20 and 50c coins have already been released and the 1 and 2 dollar coins will be released before the end of the year .
Thank you! I 50c were in circulation for a couple of months... 5 10 20c are nowhere to be found :)
Maybe the mintage quantity is extremely low?
Well too bad I won't be here by the end of the year...

I am pretty sure one of the members here will be able to send you the coins you were unable to find :good:

You have to have at least 50 valid posts before you can access the buy/sell section on this site, It's a "safety Net" thing :ok:

I doubt it. Since they have no idea where Sydney is.
Changeover Tour is rightly doing the regional Cities of Australia and will be doing WA
I have asked if the tour will reach regional WA on the "Shaping your collection" website.
I have three grandkids that would love to go and the other 16 will probably just run amok at the venue
One of the eldest ones "Tayah" has already filled a PP album and I dropped off another "Starter pack" to her today and she asked me if the tour was coming to Geraldton, I told her I would do my best to find out for her.

I know, thank you.
But tell me please, how a newbie collector - who is also only temporarily in Australia - is meant to write 50 meaningful posts in a short timeframe, without it being stupid questions annoying to knowledgeable people?
I was not going to post any offers in that section, or any other sections, but in this particular case, someone just needs help and was asking whether there were people in Brisbane who he can get in touch with...
Sorry if this caused inconvenience.

Clearly, you can't do that. Maybe there is another way. Off the top of my head I'm not even sure what is you're looking for. I assume you've tried noodling, coin dealers etc. The ANDA show in Brisbane is coming up. Maybe you can continue to contribute to the forum after you return home and work something out then.
No need to apologise, its all :good:

Sorry, I went back and re-read the OP, I mis-understood who was who. I think its perfectly acceptable to carry on a conversation. That way you will quickly reach 50 posts and at the same time others will get to know you while you go about it.
As for the subject of the OP, I couldn't help in any case since I have little or no interest in contemporary RAM issues.
I have just pre ordered the $1 and $2 rolls from Wynyard's.
I won't get them until nearly the end of the year though.
The coins I got in the 5,10,20 and 50 cent rolls look to be in better nick that the bagged coins I got from RAM so I am not that deterred paying the premium to get these in the rolls :ok:

Yes they are But you normally get far better coins from rolls than what you can get from circulation at face value :ok:

perhaps I should edit

As DarkDaiver could have easily spammed up 50 posts with meaningless drivel and he refused to do so makes him in my books a deserving member to receive a few Aussie coins that would be virtually impossible to get where he lives in Kazakhstan.

Well thanks to Nevol I have almost everything.
I'm only missing 2$ red poplu and 2$ red circle.
also 50 years of decimal currecnty 1$ 2$ but they are not released yet ))
I thought about predicimal coins, but it seems too complicated.
The 2012 red poppy wasn't for circulation and was an RSL promotion. Yes things get even more complicated with the predecimals with all the different varieties etc.

red polpy is in circulating coins
The plain poppy coin (no colour, 5.8m mintage) was circulated and can occasionally be found in change.
The version with red colour (0.5m mintage) could only be obtained by ordering through an RSL club. It came on a special card like this AUSTRALIA 2012 $2 TWO DOLLAR UNC REMEMBRANCE DAY RED COLOURED POPPY COIN (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUSTRALIA-2012-2-TWO-DOLLAR-UNC-REMEMBRANCE-DAY-RED-COLOURED-POPPY-COIN-/151880394034). Unfortunately it was up to the individual clubs to attach the coins to the cars and some actually glued them on!
Here is what the mint says https://www.ramint.gov.au/news-media/news/frequently-asked-questions-2-remembrance-day-poppy-coin.

that's very sad.
All this time i was hoping to receive it in change
Very occasionally one will be spent and turn up in change. Chances of finding one are negligible because many people always keep any coloured $2 they receive.
Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='91349' dateline='1466749891'Very occasionally one will be spent and turn up in change. Chances of finding one are negligible because many people always keep any coloured $2 they receive.
Hahaha who would spent such a coin? especially if he bought it...
You'd be surprised DD, people have hard times sometimes so spend their collection and others get stolen and the spent. I have quite a few coins now that I have found in circulation that are meant to be there, it's mainly the $1 carded one's that you'll find but there are one's from mint sets as well.
I have quite a few coins, only ever available in mint sets (including some proofs) that I have 'noodled'. That includes a few 1966 silver 50¢.
Some possibilities'
•The buyer is not a serious collector and ends up using them as (s)he has no real interest.
•A collector stops collecting and decides that easiest way to disperse the collection is to use them. Could be a mistake to do that.
•A collector dies and family has no interest and just spends them.
•They are stolen and thief doesn't care what collector value they have, just wants to use them quick.
A friend of mine had four hundred 1966 round 50¢ stolen from his house (along with a cabinet full of fine liquor). A few days later a similar amount were cashed in at a bank in a nearby town. Nothing can be proven in a case like this no matter how strong the suspicion.
If cashed in coins are same size, shape and general appearance as normal circulation coins the average bank teller will not notice they are something out of the ordinary and use them to make up change bags to issue later.

That's it, I'm gonna engrave all my coins and put property of AJ on them :) hopefully having my name should make them more valuable :mocking:
Or not! :diablo:
It would have to add value wouldn't it, well one would like to think so anyway
Well, imagine you are doing some noodling in several years time and come across a coin with "JAYSON" engraved on it.
What would that be worth? Face value only as it is obviously a reject from the AJ mint (sub-branch of the trout mint), but what will the emotional value be?
:yahoo: PRICELESS! :swoon:
:laugh2:
I'm doing it :)
I hope you are not suggesting you will be Defacing, destroying or altering Australian currency coins (https://www.ramint.gov.au/using-coin-designs).
QuoteThe penalty for defacing coins, or selling or possessing money that has been defaced, is $5,000 or imprisonment for two years for an individual (or both)
.
So they'll feed and house me for two years :)
But would they really do anything because people that have and deal in fakes seem to get away with it because the coppers don't seem to care. But I wouldn't do it anyway :winkextra:

Same here. It has cost a heap in postage so far and I see the other coins are still in stock at the RAM. :(
I think that the ONLY reason that they are still in stock is because of the 1 set or baggie per transaction rule RAM imposed on these.
You had better get in quick on Monday before the eBay bottom dwellers clean out not only the $2 baggies but the entire inventory because they will ALL be available for just 1 lot of postage.
Mr Cotton and his cronies will have these in black hologram stickered rolls and baggie sets at inflated prices on eBay and elsewhere in a heartbeat :dodgy:
Where have you guys heard that you can order the whole set of baggies for $50 including postage? Or have you just deduced that from whats available now by adding the $2 bag to a $1, 50c, and mixed 5, 10 & 20c bag?
Cheers Mike

That is the way that RAM have structured the sale of these.
You can order 1 lot of each of the baggie offerings at a time and pay the one $10 postage fee for all of them.
That is one reason I bought several of the boxed/proof sets earlier this year.
I don't have to worry about getting a set from circulation.

Did you get several Proof sets or Mint sets Bruce??
I don't know Trout.
I got the normal proof set then the other set came out in the white cover and nice coins inside.
Me thinks they are the mint set(s) as I pulled one apart and put the coins into my Unc albums.
I hadn't noticed it before, but the RAM is charging GST on the invoices they produce for these coins. ie. the invoice is for $21, but they have only charged my credit card $20. That is for one set of $1 coins plus postage. I guess they then have to pass the GST onto the government coffers, even if they didn't charge it in the first place. :)
Maybe W.A. is not considered sovereign territory anymore, perhaps a local determination by the RAM, and therefore the GST has been waivered??

I also noticed that and asked them about it. They said to ignore the gst charge on the invoice. It is just some internal procedure they do for some weird reason.

i think coins i.e. legal tender are exempt from the GST
so they probably charge and then credit back
if HRM QEII is on the coin - it's gst free
not so sure about the packaging

Agreed. The only GST should be in the postage.

Strange that the $2 coins are not yet available as normally you can order them in the wee hours on the day they are released??.
Hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer and I can get some out of the pond.
I found them they are hidden on page 4 :dodgy:

That said and they have just turned up!
I am in the Netherlands at the moment. Went on the RAM eshop and ordered a bag of $2 and a bag of $1 changeover coins, the 3 new Australians at war 50 cents, the 2017 year of the rooster $1 and 50 cents. Nice little haul for $66 plus $10 postage. Very happy with that.

Good choice mate I ordered the same well done :wavemulticolor:
With yesterdays pick up at the post office I now finally have a complete set of the changeover rolls.
Now all I have to do is to resist the temptation to open them as I have opened every other roll that I have bought in the past

I picked up a $1 and $2 roll of these changeover coins that I had forgot that I had ordered from Wynyard Coins today.

It is No wonder that all the changeover baggies are temporarily unavailable and that we are all still waiting for ours to be delivered when one reseller orders 5,000 at a time.
I imagine that 5,000 of every lot of the baggies would have been ordered from ram in batches at $50 a pop and that the other denominations will be home rolled as well.
As Cotton and Co is an authorised RAM reseller I am not sure if he can be considered a "Drop Order" seller as these are a Pre Order item he is making But I would think that RAM would be taking a pretty dim view with what he is doing here.

Nup. All the other bags came within a week or two of being ordered, but this one's well into the third week, and there's still no sign of it. I was thinking of going back to get another one because they only come in bags of 5, compared with 40 for the 5c and 10c, but I think I might just have to be grateful for what I've got. The mint should have hard limits on the number of coins each person can buy, like Woollies did when they were distributing the coloured Olympic coins, so people can't corner the market. Otherwise, it's not fair on people with low incomes, and it turns them off coin collecting altogether. :winkextra:
Good luck trying to get any of the $2 coins as they have been "Unavailable" for some time now and traditionally this usually equates to no more available :ok:
RAM may produce some more of these "baggies" for the changeover coins But with all the abuse that has happened this year with circulating coins I much doubt that RAM will indulge us with any more of the Baggies in future.
This will be a real shame because it wasn't long ago that these small sample type bags were not available and were a very welcome innovation for collectors.
I for one hope that RAM will continue to provide us the opportunity to acquire the new circulating coinage this way in the future but I think that they will have to impose "Meaningful" and accountable limitations in future to ensure that there is NO repeat of what has occurred this year.

I've already bought one bag, but I wish I'd bought more, in case I decide to turn them into sets. What's the point of having 40 5c and 10c pieces when you can only make complete sets from 5 of them? Doesn't that make the other 35 pieces redundant?

I think it was always going to end this way. When I was a kid, I was content to have just one of each circulating coin, but nowadays, everyone wants 50 or 100 of them. The mint is largely to blame for this because they abandoned a long-held tradition of always minting commemorative coins in very large numbers to stop them from being hoarded. Now, they've reignited the exact same attitude that caused the silver 50c to be withdrawn, and they're paying the price for it. If they want to stop this kind of abuse, they need to regain the public's trust by making every commemorative coin a high-mintage release, so no one will want to hoard them. Otherwise, people are going to keep treating these coins like the 2000 mule. :)
I think its just a phase associated with Ebay,FB,GT etc, while ever there are Wood Ducks willing to pay multiples over face because its Unc. or in a plastic holder there will be the unscrupulouse trying to make easy $.
Coin buying/selling has become a Cottage Industry out on Internet at the moment but surely market forces and reality will hit eventually.

I would have thought this forum would be in favour of letting other coin collectors know about the unscrupulous behavior of certain ebay sellers in order that they might avoid them.

I am pretty certain that Most of the members here are aware of to whom you are referring and are NOT a fan But we have to refrain from mentioning names or eBay identities here because there could be legal ramifications for this forum and that will affect the Forum and Markn Personally.

hello there possum :welcome:
I have just done a "Head count" on the changeover baggies I have accumulated over this year and I have ended up with 7 sets of baggies and some spare $1 and $2 from baggies that I opened up.
I think I may have gone a bit overboard But most of them were just tagged onto other orders so I didn't cop the $10 postage on all of them and I got most of them at face :)
Quote from: 'trout' pid='101618' dateline='1479466608'Imost of them were just tagged onto other orders so I didn't cop the $10 postage on all of them and I got most of them at face :)
Smart :)
Ok I have half a dozen of the Changeover empty folders that RAM handed out last year and I am thinking of cherrypicking a few of my mint "Baggies" to fill them with choice coins as gifts.
The coins in the little baggies look to be in a lot better condition than the coins in the 2016 RAM Mint sets as well.
The only problem with is that the coins will tarnish over time pretty much the same way that coins do in the Dansco push in albums.
Is there some way to seal these in mylar to prevent this ?
I have tried using my vacuum sealer But the results are pretty "ordinary" as the plastic is pretty thick and bulky.
Is there a thread on how to stop coins from tarnishing? No matter how hard I try, the aluminium bronze coins always seem to change colour after a year or two. :dash1:

If you are talking about circulated coins then I would imagine that the damage has already been done due to people handling the coins.
With uncirculated coins that come from rolls or bags or even the NCLT carded coins putting them into heat sealed saflips or 2x2's will measurably slow down the toning process on these coins.
The NCLT carded coins that have the open ended pocket that holds the coins are notorious for toning the coins and putting these into saflips or 2x2's is a good method of preserving the coins integrity and you can always keep the card as removing the coin doesn't damage it.
What do you do with the RAM bags? I always leave my coins in the bags because I think they'll be worth more if I try to sell them, but judging by the look of the coloured $2 coins I bought back in 2015, I'm not so sure now. Do you think I should take them out of the bags and put them in 2x2s to stop them from tarnishing? :(
QuoteWhat do you do with the RAM bags?
I have vacuum sealed quite a few of these and I have No idea as to what the long term effects of doing this is But as the bags are Not air tight I think that it is at least worth a try :ok:
After being vacuum sealed not only are the coins protected from the air But they are also held firmly in place so that they wont bag up any further as well.
Has anyone found any $1 in circulation yet?
I still have not found any.
I have found four so far.
That's 4 more than me Jeff!!! :laugh2:
I think that the $1 are thought of as a low mintage and are being hoarded.
I can't remember what the mintage is for these on the last RAM report but normally we don't find out what the actual mintage is for another couple of years.

Possibly. I think it's much more likely that they're behind schedule for these, due to the need to make both the Standard and the ANZAC coins as well. They also spent a lot of time making the coloured $2 coins for Wollies, so I'd be inclined to wait another 6-9 months before making a final judgement about their mintage.
I think it's very unlikely that they're being hoarded, because most hoarders would have bought them straight from the mint. Chances are, they're sitting at the back of an Armaguard depot somewhere, waiting to be released into circulation. ;)
Another possibility is that they're still minting them, and will make them available later this year.
Seeing as I have quite a Swag load of the changeover baggies due to me tagging them onto my various orders from RAM I am happy to share some of them at face value But lets wait a couple more months to see what ends up out and about in the wild before I get too hasty.
I just had a look at my latest order from RAM and they have the little folder on the order list as well as the bag of 50c coins.
I wonder if that is a typo or they are still sending these with the 50c baggies as they did at the start of all this?
