This is a peel with a bit of a twist, it appears to have come off in 2 separate pieces leaving a little 'bridge' of the surface intact.

[attachment=197][attachment=196]I have a two dollar coin with a major planchet error - half of the surface of the tail of the coin has lifted. How do I find out its value?
You could find out it's value by putting it up for auction on eBay but prices can be up and down on there depending on your wording and who sees the auction.
I'd be interested to know what the surface is like under the peeled flap. Also has someone had a go at it to lift the flap?
I'd suggest a rough value of $50+
Another mishap

Under the lifted piece you can still see the imprint of the face and the 2. I have tried to photograph under the lifted piece without success. It was in this condition when we acquired it. :)
It should look like this under the flap.

I'd been looking for an error like that 5c type for years. :drooling:
Didn't manage to find one so bought a New Zealand 50c one instead. It's posted back on page 1 of the world error thread.
That 5c is magnificent.
It is one of my favourite coins. I know of one other five cent that is very similar that is owned by another forum member. I have also seen a two cent sell on ebay. I am still kicking myself for not bidding but I had no money at the time. It went very cheaply because I do not think the seller knew what it was and there were very few bidders.
This is a $1 coin that Triggersmob gave me when we met up in Brisbane in Jul 2011

Nevol,
I once had a $1000 of new Armaguard APEC $1 rolls. I kept a few H/T and opened the rest. I think I kept about 40 CHU, but did not find one error! That APEC of yours is a real keeper.

That is one butt ugly 2 cent piece.
I cannot for the life of me understand why people revere these imperfect coins.
Sure they are rare and unusual, But words like outstanding, beautiful and the like. Really don't apply.
They are simply sub standard products from a mint.
I know there is a huge following for error coins; I just can't get my head around as to why.
I prefer my coins to be perfect in every way, I haven't achieved that yet but I am working on it.
And you are entitled to your opinion, Mr Trout.:) I wouldn't mind an Aussie error like that in my modest collection. Unfortunately I have only been unlucky enough to acquire an example from New Zealand and India.
An Australian coin struck on an split planchet is a rare beast indeed and extremely desirable. You may as well ask why people collect mid-grade 1925 pennies or awful looking 1930 pennies. Everything is desirable to someone different and I learned a long time ago that it's folly to try to apply your idea of what is attractive against what other people do.

Clearly I'm not the only person who has a different idea of what's attractive because I'm butt ugly and PPH still likes me :wavemulticolor:
I think part of it is a bit like winning the lotto, your numbers have to come up and what are the chances of that happening.
Think of all the things that had to fall into place for that error to happen and Peter found that needle in a haystack.
The planchet had to have an imperfection that caused an entire split in half, it did so before being struck. It has a mate that might be out there (long lost twin?) It got struck and went through the system almost like a stowaway never being caught or discovered. Then one day along the line it was captured for Peter to identify and get for a ridiculously small price. I'd be celebrating just like I had won the lotto.
I have only ever seen one other (Aussie) of these coins, yes in a much better grade (it's always going to be weak because of the thin planchet) and that's the 5c of errorsarebest. I am an error collector and this type of error is one that still eludes me.

Trout, does this mean you only collect coins that would grade MS70?
The phrase "if it's not unc it's junk" springs to mind here.
Trout, does this mean you only collect coins that would grade MS70?
I Wish.
Each to their own, I really don’t like error coins unless they are something a little different to the normal coin like the incused millennium or the "Bubble" 20 cents.
All the design is still on the coin it is just a little different that’s all.
I can understand people collecting errors due to their rarity and value and the thrill of the hunt when noodling.
I like toned coins, coins with nice designs and coins in great shape.
We all have different collecting goals and that’s what makes it soo interesting :good:

That is a HUGE chunk of metal missing from that coin and yet It still has most of the design under the surface.
I recon you should send this to Nevol, Sh has a whole bunch of broken coins that she just hasn’t got around to fixing yet

yeah - it is really cool
pity the missing bit is MIA
My bad on the early missing pictures. Was upgrading older pics and scans. Deleted the older ones. Anyway over a period of time picked up a few more :)

Top coins Gnome! Some of the best I think I've seen.
Some spectacular 1964 penny errors and no new response from robbiegal. She must be speechless.
So many errors being posted lately and great photos. I am eagerly waiting to see how many more come along.
