Title: First Coin of the Year
Post by: Chuckey on April 02, 2016, 08:26:03 AM
Does anyone know of any numbered MYO first $1 coins of the year that have come up for sale or auction? - I did a search in the forum and ebay and couldnt find anything. Cheers

Think it's nearly the same family for the last 4 or 5 years, others not so sure. Think goldie may have a couple as well.
Hope I'm not talking out of school here.

they reckon he will give it up next year
but there is quite a mob of them so I reckon someone from the family will be there boxing day or so for the 'sit in'
personally i'd rather my teenager got a job or went on a bit of a  holiday than hang around the mint building 24/7 over the xmas new year each year after year
I think its a bit of fun for the adults and it's great to have young collectors but becoming and encouraged to be, so very obsessional at such a young age is a bit of a worry

My first year minted coin has no number.   The spiel on the display says first minted coin of the year.

I have never ever seen any of the "first minted coins"  come up on ebay or sold in a public arena.

However, I have seen a couple of the Number 2 - 100 certificate coins come up for sale on ebay over the years.

Although it was reported that the youngster who got one several years ago was offered $850.00 something after he was presented with the framed coin and before he left the RAM floor.

I am sure it was reported either in this forum or an earlier one that has gone to the gods.

I still have mine and anybody has ever offered to buy mine.

I'm interested what the ebay sale price was for these coins was if you recall.
Harley reportedly was offered 3.5k to give up his spot at front of the queue one year:

3.5 K would well and truly be worth getting over there on boxing day

Regardless of if it is the first or 1000th coin pressed it will look exactly the same.
The only difference is a bit of cardboard, Buggered if I would wait in line for 3-4 days for that.
As for paying a ridicules premium for the first in line  packaging , I don't think so

Now if they counter-stamped it with the number "1" it would be a different story.

That's not a bad idea Bob. Having the portable press set up in the foyer along side the gallery presses, and fitted with a specially designed punch to denote say the first one hundred coins really appeals. Of course the very first coin would need to be counterstamped in a different position, or maybe even counterstamped twice to keep it unique. I like it :good:

Chucker asked:

"What year is your 'first coin' Goldy"?

My First Mint Coin was 2010 Centenary Of Australian Coinage.

It hangs in the lounge room in pride and place for all to see.

I just had a look at it and the coin has a wee bit of discolouration towards the top one third of the coin on the reverse.   Might have to take a closer look as it is still in the original slide in mount that one gets with each stamping of a MYO coin.

I have often been asked would I go and try and be the first again.   Well, unless the RAM will allow me to pitch a tent immediately adjacent to the visitor entrance door, allow me to use their toilets and won't mind the wofting of burnt meats from the BBQ, TV and portable generator etc etc etc, I don;'t think.

In fact the very first time I was first to mint a MYO was on 01 Jan 2005 End Of WW11, 60th Anniversary when I pressed the coin in front of the CEO and others and as I pressed the 13th coin, the press jammed.   When the press was opened up, big George did the dismantling of the press, a coin failed to eject and was caught between another coin and the coin ended up as a perfect blockage but looked like the aussie rules football.   This happened in front of the CEO and others.   I was allowed to hold the coin but had to give it back as the coin did not voluntarily eject from the press.   It was a time when the VG presses were in the small aisle , adjacent to the old film theatre in the old front building.

I did get my picture in the newspapers as a result but the cut out I did have has disappeared.   Somewhere' still around but can't find it right now.

In this case I'm not interested in the intrinsic value, just what the market is paying
