Is it really worth keeping first and last prefix notes from early polymer years to date?
I have found a few $10 blue ink in first and last over the years and also 100s of different notes in all denominations, Searching for these is quite a challenge but i enjoy it
Yes & no,,, If you can get them in a good grade then hang onto them.
But some of the rarer notes in not such a high grade are still worth a premium.
It is a little hard to get a good price for $50's & $100's I've sold some on ebay that have cost me money to sell with fees & what not.
But If you can afford to hang on to them, hang onto them, a form of saving, then you can buy something good.
not really , I have heaps of them , but no body wants them .
if you sell a $ 100 .00 note on ebay for $ 100.00 you get $ 90.00 so you lose ten dollars out of your 100. 00 straight away ,and if they pay by p/p that also cost you fees , so you need to sell a $ 100.00 note for $ 150.00 or it is not worth the trouble .
where else can you sell them if not on ebay . be like me , go ahead and spend them .
A good discussion.
What aboutr the paper $100.00 notes. I am not talking about unc but the less circulated ones with no folds etc.
Are they worth anything to hang on to as I have in the safe five of them as I type.
I think the only polymer note I would get excited to find these days is a VG95 $50, but I've probably got a better chance of flying to the moon.
I do have one in my collection, but from memory it's pretty beat up. VG95 919106
The AN97 and DN97 $5 test notes are definitely worth keeping. In fact 3 years ago at Easter, I received a DN97 note in my change in aVF condition, so they are still out there in the wild, so to speak.
Also the AN96 and CS96 $100 notes are definitely worth keeping in reasonable condition and they are still very much out there in the wild.
The KC05 $5 is worth keeping, only for its low print number, but most notes were snapped up by collectors at the time.
The 2001 Federation $5 notes are also probably worth keeping, especially the first and last prefixes.
It is funny how few people now even remember those 1 year special notes.
Cheers

Gee what I'd give for a few more KE 93's or the DF 94's
Most of the $10.00 First & last are well worth saving.
$2 HLP Last Prefix is rarer than rocking horse shit
QuoteWhat about the paper $100.00 notes?
A few years ago someone cashed in about $3,000 of nice ones at the bank. I went through and picked out the very best ones and bought them.
Started putting them on eBay and could only get $110 to $115 each for them. As Kel said; take away the eBay and PayPal fees and you're going backward. I could not afford to keep them then so ended up cashing them back in.
Have had a similar experience with $50 notes.
I think the face value of the larger notes is against you in this scenario. People are only prepared to pay a few dollars premium above face unless a note is really distinctive for some reason. A few dollars on a small value note is a good percentage return but on a large value note is negligible.

bruce , I got $ 110.00 ea for my lot of 10 ...
2 years ago , and they were nice and flat . ,, kel ,,
I sold 4 x 1988 first issue $ 10.00 notes last year for $ 30.00 ea on ebay , then the guy asked me to cancel the sale a week later and did not pay , because he got a large bill from his doctor , so he said .
these are the ones they printed at first , then recalled them and made a new batch . AB 10 / AB 33 mine are AB 26 .
Looks like I had better spend them then.
Thanks for the responses

Kel, the VG95 is the start of the serial no. I think from memory the condition of mine may just scrape in as 'good', but I'd have to find it to be sure.
Last Prefix $50 VG notes are usually well sought after. There are 13 on Ebay at present:

I remember the KCO5 when the RAM was selling banknotes
Depends on the year and denomination. Recent ones probably not so much as the Reserve Bank sold them at a small mark-up so anyone who wanted them got them. Seems that some of the earlier ones can be quite pricey though.

I collect all polymer first / last and test notes I get in change and also any paper note I can find. They have to be in good condition though. I can't see circulated being worth much above face in the near future but my children and grand children will have a pretty neat collection to remember me by. Just think what it would be like if your grandparents and parents had done the same.... what a bonus.
If you can afford it I think it's a good idea to set them aside.:wavemulticolor:
Keep in mind we're about to get brand new notes, and the banks will be actively withdrawing the current ones from circulation. I would say in not too many more years, they'll start getting pretty hard to find in any condition.
